Loch Dhu Cottage, newly restored in the Trossachs 7 miles to Aberfoyle

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,076 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

2 bedrooms, stunning views, central heating, multi-fuel stove, lochside location

Awarded 3 stars by Visit Scotland (the Scottish Tourist Board), our spacious and cosy traditional cottage is situated in the heart of the Trossachs with uninterrupted mountain and loch views. A real gem for anyone who likes walking, cycling, watersports or just relaxing.

Available to rent on a weekly basis (and for shorter stays too, by arrangement), the cottage is single storied with full central heating. It includes:

a newly refurbished bright and spacious kitchen/dining/sofa area

a comfy sitting room (with multi-fuel burning stove)

2 bedrooms - 1 with a double bed and 1 with two single beds

1 bathroom with separate shower and bath

a drying room

The occupants have the use of a full size garage and private parking space. They also have the security of knowing that Loch Dhu House is nearby in case of any problems.

The front and rear gardens are securely gated and fenced. The gate in the rear garden gives entry to a field which adjoins Loch Dhu. Cottage occupants have a single rod fishing licence included in the rental cost.

The beautiful natural backdrop of the Trossachs provides a multitude of activities to appeal to every taste, from gentle forest walks to hillwalking, climbing, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing, golfing, canoeing and other watersports.

There are myriad forest walks available, ranging from the short 2 mile excursion to Doon Hill, near Aberfoyle (the setting for a local fairy tale!) to the longer 12 mile walk from the Trossachs Pier to Stronachlacher (returning by steamer). Details of various walks can be found in the Trossachs Footprints Walks leaflets contained in the information box in the cottage, and a wider selection is available at the Aberfoyle Tourist Information Office.

For hillwalking enthusiasts there are a selection of Munros (Scotland's mountains of 3000ft & over) in the area, as well as other hills:

Ben A'an(461m - footpath from A821, north of Loch Achray)

Ben Venue (727m - accessible from behind Loch Achray Hotel near Trossachs Pier, or Glen Ledard from Kinlochard)

Ben Ledi (879m -footpath from A84, 2.5 miles from Callander)

Ben Lomond(974m - footpath from Rowardennan on east side of Loch Lomond)

Ben More & Stob Binnein (1174m & 1165m - from A85 close to Crianlarich)

Ben Vorlich & Stuc a'Chroin (985m & 975M - from Ardvorlich on south side of Loch Earn)

Stron Lochie (501m - the hill on the other side of Loch Dhu! - no path, and requires a bit of scrambling through undergrowth & trees!)

Beinn Dubh (511m - follow the signs for Comer farm and turn right off the track at Stronmacnair, a ruined farmhouse).

Of course, it should be remembered that hillwalking requires a good map & navigation skills, correct clothing & footwear and checking of the relevant weather forecasts.

The Queen Elizabeth Forest Park with its many tracks provides lots of cycling possibilities - cycling part way round Loch Katrine, and Achray Forest Drive are 2 good routes. More details from Aberfoyle Tourist Information Office. There are many tens of kilometres of Forest tracks starting right outside the cottage.

Bicycle Hire:

Forest Hills Watersports, Kinlochard - Kinlochard - Trossachs Cycles,Trossachs Holiday Park, 3 miles south of Aberfoyle on A81 - Wheels Cycle Hire, Invertrossachs Road, Callander - Katrinewheelz, Trossachs Pier

What an amazing place! We had a wonderful few days here with lots of walking and exploring. We tried the butcher, as suggested, a few times - so good !

For sure we will be back.

Irish living in London

Spacious, homely, very comfortable beds, superb view of lake, highly recommend

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful surprise when we reached Loch Dhu Cottage. It is a gorgeous spacious well equipped house located beside a delightful lake. We enjoyed a guest on the lawn - a duck from Loch Dhu lake enjoying some eats in the evening. The many birds in the garden entertained us singing and enjoying the food left out for them. The house is much bigger than anticipated. There is no Wifi but who needs Wifi when you're in Loch Lomond enjoying the wonderful walks and scenery and just chilling out away from city life. The wood burner is a treat and so easy to operate. Great kitchen. Gorgeous comfortable beds - a joy at the end of the day

The area is wonderful - Aberfoyle has the best deli/butchers opposite the tourist info centre - a must for foodies.

Judith, who manages the property, was so helpful and was ultra quick to respond to queries pre booking.

We would highly recommend Loch Dhu cottage and would definitely stay there again.

Do visit the Woolen Mills in Aberfoyle where you can enjoy the best 'alternative' sheep/duck trials.

Stirling Castle a must. Wish we had more time. Thank you. 10/10 N Culleton/ A Hogan June 2017

A beautiful cottage in a truly stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fabulous Easter break at the beautiful Loch Dhu Cottage.

We arrived late in the evening and so could not appreciate the cottage's location upon first arrival. We were however greeted with warmth and surprise as the photos just do not do this place justice.

Waking in the morning we were able to appreciate the cottages location for the first time.. mountains, greenery, wildlife and your own loch.. what more could we ask for?!

The location is brilliant. We were familiar with the area having visited nearby as part of a previous trip. It certainly did not disappoint.

To top it off we had a lovely home cooked Easter meal which was helped by a lovely lady in the nearby The Tea Pot cottage who was able to save us when we ran low on flour!

We will most definitely be returning to Loch Dhu Cottage and would highly recommend.

Thank you

Once found, you'll love it!

Loch Dhu Cottage was a joyful experience throughout every step of the process: finding it, booking it and - finally - experiencing it. The booking manager, Judith was so helpful and gracious. The entire reservation process was so professional and pleasant!

The cottage is BEAUTIFUL - sitting well back from the road, it is part of a larger complex including the private Loch Dhu House. You'd be hard pressed to find better views over a morning coffee anywhere. Very well equipped - electric tea kettle, coffee maker, dishware and most importantly some leftover "stock" as in salt/pepper, spices - a real plus when you are trying to cook without buying to supply an entire pantry. The beds were really comfortable, the living room was cozy - perfect for watching the BCC (Cottage comes with a basic satellite package) The on-site manager, Gareth was pleasant and very prompt when we had a glitch with the TV and took care of it quickly. The week we stayed just flew by and we loved every minute of it.

The cottage is only a few miles outside of Aberfoyle, which is a truly charming town in the Trossachs with a lot to offer anyone who wanted to experience the region and all things Scottish! However, be prepared to drive some very narrow and not in great shape roads to get there, and understand that what looks like a 5 minute drive doesn't equate in reality. You cannot speed when you are on a road that is at best a lane and 1/2 and around blind turns, hills and between lochs and rocks!

There are a few things that I'll make note of: The turn back to the cottage is not well marked at all. I honestly thought it was a logging road when we first went back. There was also a lot of clear cut lumber area which we hadn't known about - but overall didn't cause problems. There is NO cell phone service that we could get - even climbing up the path to the back road and up to the top of the hill. So we communicated in town. The cottage information should also be updated a bit - the "DVD/Video rental" mentioned has not existed for many years, according to the townspeople we asked. But with the TV package - no real issue. Finally - having a small box of laundry soap on site for guests would be a great addition. We had dishwasher tabs, but ended up buying a regular container of laundry tabs, the balance of which we left for the next guest. Hope they enjoyed their stay as much as us!

Don't miss: Wee Blevin Tea shop, Forth Inn, Wool Center, Doune Hill walk.

Owner's Response: Thanks for writing so many useful and appreciative comments. You had horrible weather throughout your stay so we're particularly pleased you both enjoyed yourselves nonetheless. In response to the things you have noted; the signpost to Loch Dhu House is small and not very prominent because we treasure being "off the beaten track" in peace and quiet. I will update the directions to make sure everyone knows that the final 500 yards or so are on a well maintained track rather than a tarmac road. As you discovered, a large amount of forest nearby has recently been felled and this gives the cottage more light in the spring/autumn and a much more open outlook. I have updated and tidied up the welcome information book which was much needed and we'll supply some laundry detergent in future.

Amazing Holidays!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for a lovely place to stay!

After our trips it was always great to be here again and to sit in front of the fireplace all evening.

We walked to the top of Ben Lomond and Ben Venue, drove to Glen Coe, visited Glengoyne distillery. An amazing week!

We wish you the very best.

Family Körner

PS: Mum is a great fan of the pictures of the house and also the view out of the kitchen!

Owner's Response: Wonderful to have such enthusiastic and happy comments from you, Kerstin. It seems you all made the most of your time here; Scotland in June can be glorious. The views from the tops of Ben Lomond and Ben Venue are pretty stunning aren't they! Thank you and best wishes for more happy holidaying wherever you go... Judith

Splendid weeks stay with young kids

  • 4 of 5

Although we had some difficulties finding the cottage (the sign to Loch Du House could be a bit bigger ;o)) we were pleasantly surprised about the size of the cottage. It was all nicely refurbished recently and we fell in love with it and its views straight away. The shower has been the best we had in our 2 week travel through Scotland :o). The cottage is located very well to do all sorts of day trips: going on a boat trip on one of the lakes, going for walks, climbing the ben A'an (very recommendable), visiting the Glengoyne distillery, etc. There is plenty of tourist information present in the cottage regarding activities to fill your days. It's also very positive that there is no mobile reception nor internet so you can't be disturbed at all. We will definately return one day! The only downside was the absence of a dryer (being with a new born, you need to do a lot of washing and the wash doesn't dry as well but that's just a minor thing, the views and the cottage itself make up for it :o)).

Owner's Response: Hello Emily Thank you for taking the time to write about your stay. It's never easy holidaying with very wee ones so we're especially glad you had such a good time. Sorry you had difficulty finding the cottage - that's a first for us, thanks for letting us know. Yes, a drier would be nice but an unlikely purchase for the time being I'm afraid. Hope you'll be back before too long. Judith

Perfect House - excellent landscape

  • 4 of 5

Wow, this cottage is much bigger than it appears on the pictures. The view on the Loch Dhu and the hills around ist wonderfull. Unlucky, we had real cold weather with outside temperatures around 13 C. the first days and the heating in the cottage did not make possible to get more than 17 - 18 C during the day. We bought a lot wood for the romantic stove fire in the living room.

Owner's Response: Hello Andreas, we are delighted that your family enjoyed the cottage and its wonderful location/views. However, it is such a shame the weather was unusually cold and the cottage was not warm enough for you - our sincere apologies. On the day you left we picked up your note advising us of the problem and it is such a shame that we were not advised much earlier. The heating system was checked and sorted immediately. It is now working effectively again. In addition, the cottage now has some new cooking pans, glasses, cutlery set and a new dish washer (Bosch) too. Best wishes, Judith
