Berville sur Mer is a small rural hamlet six miles from the picturesque harbour town of Honfleur. Honfleur offers a wealth of fine restaurants, art galleries, museums and a fabulous 16th century wooden church. Le Havre is approximately 20 minutes drive and Calais or Boulogne are approximately two and a half to three hours drive away.

Excellent beaches can be found at Honfleur, Deauville and Trouville

Day trips to the Monet Gardens, Normandy Beaches, Bayeux Tapestry or the wonderful cathedral at Rouen is highly recommended.

Great place for the whole Family

  • 5 of 5

From the word go we felt right at home. The hosts are wonderfully welcoming and showed us around our cottage upon arrival. The cottages are very clean and open plan and fitted out to a high standard. The kids can play in a wonderful save and fun environment. The grounds are huge and beautifully kept. For us the location was great. 10km to Honfleur on bikes along the Seine. We hired bikes from the tourist centre in Beauzeville. Les (the owner of the cottages) even assisted with bike repair. The little restaurant around the corner serves lovely food at a very reasonable price. All in all a great place! Highly recommend

Disappointing

  • 2 of 5

Given we based our decision to stay here on previous reviews, we feel it only right to contribute our own experience of staying at this property.

First, communication with the owners was difficult, with chasing up of responses to email enquiries required and a curt response received to a simple enquiry about availability of a highchair.

First impressions of the cottage was disappointing. The 'well manicured lawns' advertised were in fact overgrown, the patio flowers were dead and we were greeted with a dead mouse on the grass outside our cottage. We let ourselves in (the owners were absent due to a bereavement) and found very little in the way of information, either for the cottage or for the local area. We could not get the wifi to work, and had to contact the owner's daughter (our point of contact) to find out what we were doing wrong. It turns out the wifi only works in the car park! To advertise that this cottage has internet access is therefore clearly misleading, and given we would not have booked a cottage for two weeks without wifi access (or making alternative arrangements) this was extremely frustrating. In fact, due to the owners having turned off the wifi whilst they were away, we didn't even have access to wifi until they returned five days after our arrival, even from the car park.

The cottage was equipped with the most basic items, some of which were well past their sell-by date. For example, the tin opener didn't work (this was replaced on the owners' return, but didn't help open the tins needed for my children's' tea upon arrival!), wine glasses were cracked, pans were badly scoured etc. Our patio umbrella didn't work - we had to borrow our neighbours'.

The cottage needed a through clean-it had had only a surface clean.

All in all, we could not recommend staying here. We appreciate the cost is pretty reasonable in relation to others in the area, but we were prepared to spend more-but were swayed by the positive reviews for this accommodation.

Owner's Response: We have taken some time to respond to your review and for that we apologise. We are sorry that the cottage and grounds did not meet your expectations when you arrived. We do take great pride in our property and as we live onsite we are able greet our holiday makers personally, many who have been visiting us for over 8 years, offer assistance where needed and if necessary resolve any problems. Unfortunately this was just not possible when you arrived. The grounds and the cottages are usually very well maintained but unfortunately the sudden death of our son who was living overseas meant we had to leave with no notice. Therefore, our normal service and attention to detail was not as we would have wished during this difficult time. With regards to the internet we do state that due to the location and the type of building the internet access is not guaranteed. On this occasion it was switched off by mistake in our haste to leave.

Absolute heaven

  • 5 of 5

This place is absolutely amazing and we enjoyed a fantastic family holiday here. The property itself is stunning and a real credit to the owners, who went out of their way to help us whenever we needed them. The location is perfect for nearby Honfleur, a town which has everything you will need to help you enjoy your holiday. I would highly recommend staying here, you will not regret it.

Great accommodation in beautiful settings

  • 4 of 5

We arrived the first day of the summer holidays and was delighted to be so close to Honfelur. There was 6 people in our party, I wouldn't recommend the accommodation for this amount of people as my two children had to 'top and tail' and me and my husband were in single beds. The garden is amazing, perfectly kept, the kids had lots of fun making friends with other children on site and playing hide and seek. The Inside the property could do with a bit of a make over as lots of light bulbs had gone, We couldn't get the TV to work, wifi only worked if you stood outside the owners house. Location wise, perfect. A two minute drive down the road and you'll find a lovely bakery, pub and restaurant, also a small shop. Beaches are lovely and there are some great restaurants by the harbour. If you don't speak good French, it may be worth investing in a French book/translator book as most menus are in French only.

The best of times

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two weeks in this cottage and will have a lifetime of great memories.

The accomodations are perfect - the home is very clean and includes everything you could need for your holiday. The size is bigger than expected. All the furnishings were comfortable. The wifi worked fine.

THe location is what makes this home prefect. It is centered in Normandy in a location where you canreach everything for a day trip. It is included right in the middle of 3 of the Lonely Planet best drive in Frances - the cheese tour, the Monet tour and the D-day tour. We visited sites in all and always make it back early enough to relax in the lovely grounds.

We recommend this home to all - the Websters will show you a great time.

Short break in Normandy

  • 5 of 5

We would highly recommend this accommodation. It is ideal for exploring this area of Normandy and the Gite provides more than adequate facilities.Mr and Mrs Webster(the owners) are very friendly and helpful and have done a wonderful job in renovating Cherry Tree Cottage and its surrounding gardens. We found that all decriptions of the property were accurate.
