Close by is the beautiful National Trust property of Cotehele, with views from the gardens over the Tamar Valley and the pretty town of Calstock. Slightly further afield and near to the town of St Austell are the lost gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project. Plymouth, which lies to the south, can be reached by train on the Tamar Valley line. An interesting cultural centre and the county town of Devon, it offers all the usual amenities.

About Andy Holliday

We love this part of Cornwall and now that our children are grown up we try to spend as much time as we can staying in the lodge ourselves. Our children also still love it and visit whenever they can.

Andy Holliday purchased this house in 2002

Why Andy Holliday chose South East Cornwall

We love the setting, the views and the peace and quiet and the on-site swimming. Also a great base for exploring both Cornwall and Devon.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a wonderful week in the lodge and have enjoyed beautiful Devon and Cornwall. I am always sad to leave the SouthWest as there is so much more I would love to see.

So yes, we would love to go back sometime.

Thanks for a great week in your house.

Fantastic holiday lodge in beautiful Tamar Valley

  • 5 of 5

A fantastic lodge in the most beautiful setting! The house is great - modern, spacious and comfortable with all you need. The large balcony with views over the valley is a particular highlight. Quiet and serene location within easy reach of local gems including Cotehele and the River Tamar, plus all that Devon and Cornwall have to offer. The listing describes the property very well - we found the house clean and well-maintained. Excellent communication from the owner was much appreciated and made our arrival hassle-free. Highly recommended.

Lovely Lodge in wonderful surroundings.

The property was very clean and tidy, well equipped, and in a lovely position. Leisure facilities were clean and warm and the staff were very helpful. Lots to do in the area and the on site restaurant was great value. We had a lovely holiday and will certainly be back!

Good house and location under surveillance

  • 3 of 5

Despite the directions, this isn't the easiest of places to find, particularly in the dark. The house number on the building is impossible to spot in the dark. Reception have a different view as to the instructions as to where the parking for the house is , but I preferred those in the joining instructions so we used that. The house was spacious (much much better than Centerparcs) with lovely views over the Tamar valley. (Great in winter, but I suspect they would be blocked out by foliage in the summer). In summer of course the balcony areas for the upstairs lounge and the downstairs master bedroom would be lovely areas to sit out.. Equipment was well provided. Having a freezer was really great and there were lots of mugs, cutlery etc. The house was tidy and clean on arrival. The swimming pool was well appreciated by my grand-children and reasonably handy for the house, as was the children's playground.

Wi-fi only in the reception area, as expected, was a major drawback. particularly as normal mobile reception is next to non-existent.

A couple of plumbing niggles, we couldn't get any bubbles out of the Jacuzzi bath, and the dishwasher tended to leak. I suppose we should have reported these, but just how much time do we want to spend getting things put right, that we can live with?

On arrival we saw the notices about CCTV. The external camera was obvious and fine. What I was not expecting was an internal CCTV camera, with its flashing red light monitoring any exit and entry to the property and any movements up and down the stairs. Had I known this was in place at the time of booking, I would not have booked. It felt creepy and intrusive.

Owner's Response: Great to hear that you liked the house. As you say, the balcony is lovely in the summer. Just to clarify, there is no CCTV in or around the house. The 'cameras' are blanks to act as a deterrent when the house is empty. In future we will ask our housekeeper to switch off the flashing light, that makes them look real, when we have guests. The jacuzzi bath work well but needs to be switched on at the main switch as well as on the bath. Problem would have been solved with a phone call. Sorry to hear about the dishwasher. It was fine when we were in the house the weekend before you arrived but we will get it checked out before our next guests arrive. Sorry to hear you had no mobile signal. It really depends on your provider. We use TalkTalk and have a good signal most of the time.

The Accommodation was very nice and unusual with the bedrooms on the ground floor

  • 4 of 5

The site was quite and friendly some of the gardens could do with maintenance. The main reception shop provides basic emergency supplies only and the restaurant was closed due to ill staff. The indoor swimming pool could have been open for longer hours ie. 8am to 7pm where as the current hours are 9am to 5pm. If you went out for the day you missed out on a swim in the evenings.

The lodge was lacking in some basic facilities such as a washing machine and tumble dryer. There needed to be a few more kitchen utensils such as decent frying pan as the one supplied was burnt on the inside therefore cooking left the food blackened. Sharper knives or a knife sharpener would have been useful as well. The bathroom extractor did not work and left the room steamy after use.

Wifi was very limited on site.

We did enjoy our stay and would definitely return.

Owner's Response: Good to hear that you enjoyed your stay. As advertised the lodge does not have a washing machine or tumble dryer but a service wash is available on the site. Sorry to hear that the new frying pan has got burnt, we will replace it (again!). The bathroom extractor fan does work, it needs to be turned on using the full cord by the door. A call to our housekeepers during your stay would have sorted this out. Andy & Pip Holliday.

July visit 2016

  • 4 of 5

Had a great week in Callington. We loved the jacuzzi bath in the house. We did miss having a washing machine. However, there was a wash service available on site. The living area was very comfy with 3 good sized leather couches. Loved the outdoor swimming pool on site it was clean and lovely and warm. The opening times could be longer though 9 to 5 didnt suit us, we would enjoy a swim in the evening after our day out and the site manager was very strict about times. The lodge was in a great location for touring the area.

A charming lodge in a woodland setting.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a week at the end of May. We found the lodge clean, tidy and spacious.

The kitchen was very well equipped with everything a family of eight would need. We took our own cleaning cloths, tea towels, washing up liquid etc but these were here when we arrived.

The beds were comfortable and plenty of pillows were provided if necessary.

The lodge is in a small park with a park and tennis courts. There is a small bar and a restaurant and an indoor and outdoor pool which we used once. Both of the pools were very warm.

We visited the little donkey sanctuary with our 3 year old granddaughter which was a 10 minute walk up the lanes. We really liked it there, it was a sunny day and we took a picnic and sat outside in the garden/play area. The donkeys could be groomed and walked if desired and there was a great indoor soft play area. A lovely place with no gimmicks or having to spend a fortune on rides!

The lodge supplied a folder with food/restaurant recommendations and places to see. Our daughters both ate at the pub in St Anne's Chapel and highly recommended it with great views of the valley to boot.

We were not very far from Looe beach (about 40 minutes) and also visited Polperro, Fowey and Polzeath.

The weather was fantastic and all in all a great holiday!
