About the Owner

We are from Preston in Lancashire and have lived in many parts of the UK with our two children. We bought la huberdiere as our family holiday home and have enjoyed more than 20 years bringing our family and friends at every opportunity to enjoy the facilities of the property, and of the beautiful coastal and rural area that it provides.

We are now retired and 5 years ago decided to sell la huberdiere and buy another property in the village for our retirement. We bought our retirement home and live in Surville about 1 km from la huberdiere but then decided to set La huberdiere up as a gite. I don't think we realised how successful this would be and we have many returning guests who fall in love with the location and the facilities, and we are really enjoying meeting guests and their families with young children following in the 'sandy' footprints of our boy and girl who are now grown. They still come in the summer to visit our home with their children for a free holiday. We have over 23 years experience in this area and can advise guests on the sights and pleasures of this unique area with its beach festivals, markets and 'Vide Greniers' (you do the translation). There are many WW2 historic sites in easy reach from the gite particularly the landing beaches. Most locally is Mont Castre (Hill 122) just outside La Haye du Puits, a strategic point in the Battle for Normandy.

the property was as described, with a substantial garden and lawned area. The pool and Jacuzzi were well maintained. The property was clean and well equipped for its capacity. The owners (live minutes away in the village) were very welcoming and helpful. We had a problem with the kitchen tap, and Steve the owner was on the scene promptly to rectify it. It is a good base for a family or extended family to holiday in Normandy. Most of the major visits (D Day beaches, Bayeaux, Mont St Michel ) are within 90mins - and the area is littered with castle and ancient monuments.

From the Owner

We were keen caravans in the 70's and 80's, each summer we would take 3 or 4 weeks off work and travel Europe going through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France, sometimes as far as Yugoslavia. We found it difficult to get the pleasure from this with 2 young children to cater for. In 1991 we crossed the channel at Cherbourg with a very large twin wheel caravan and a suitably large vehicle to tow it with for 3 weeks touring. Having crossed over during the day we found a nearby site Barfleur and set up camp for a couple of days to plan the tour. Every day we said tomorrow we are moving on, and after 3 weeks we packed up and went back on the ferry from Cherbourg, having spent a fabulous 3 week holiday in Barfleur! When we got back to UK we reflected on the cost of taking the whole rig across the channel and spending 3 weeks only 15 miles or so from the port! With that we decided to sell the caravan and look for a holiday home in Northern France. We spent a small fortune in B&B's travelling round Brittany and Normandy to find the right property and after another expensive abortive trip over to France, Irene went back to Preston and I went to my work in Suffolk. When Irene returned to Preston she had in the post a letter from an agent advising of another property in Normandy (la huberdiere) that she liked the look of. I said we could not justify the expense of another trip at that time just to view something we may not buy. So we agreed that I would go over on my own at the weekend (in March) and if it looked suitable for us Irene would meet me out there and we would make a decision together. As it happened when I saw the area and the property I was smitten. I got a little carried away and began negotiating with the owner and the agent and bought la huberdiere. Then I had an interesting conversation with Irene over the phone! When she saw la huberdiere she also fell in love with the whole set up, and here we still are today!

The property is set in a small hamlet which boasts it's own Chateau, Manoir and church . Take advantage of the peace and tranquility the local beach has to offer which is only a short walking distance away and overlooks the island of Jersey. Lose track of time as you swim in the sea, explore the rock pools for local sea life or build sand castles on the golden sands.

The beautiful harbour town of Portbail is only 7km or a ten minute drive away where you can find a horse riding centre, sailing school, supermarkets, art and craft boutiques, post office and fabulous restaurants.

Visit the local markets and sample the wonderful local grown produce this region has to offer or visit one of the many vide greniers(car boot sales) for a bargain. Visit the nearby Biscuit Factory with its cafe to sample the produce, or the local Cider Farm which produces some of the finest Normandy cider.

Take a short boat trip to Jersey or Guernsey from the nearby fishing ports of Carteret and Granville. The property is an ideal base to visit the World War 2 landing beaches of Utah and Omaha, and the historic Mont Castre (hill122) a strategic point in the Battle of Normandy.

Visit Mont St Michel, Bayeux or you could even treat yourself to a shopping trip to Paris easily reached by train. The property is only forty five minutes away from Cherbourg, 20 minutes to a mainline railway station or an hours drive from Caen airport.

Increasingly we find our guests make 'grand plans' to get out and about every day, but find themselves spending days just chilling around the beautiful heated swimming pool enjoying the solitude that La huberdiere has to offer.

Great summer weather and mild winters. Fabulous coastal and rural location. Walk down to the beach and look out across to the island of Jersey 15 miles across the sea. Lots to do in the area with easy access to WW2 landing beaches and historical sites. Take a day out to Mont St Micheal and walk the causway. Sample local produce, cider, biscuits and of course French wine. Visit the local ports and towns with simple inexpensive restaurants with great cuisine or go more up-market with fine dining if you want to splash out.
