Highgate lies close to the River Severn. The area is rich in stunning landscape and is in one of the most beautiful parts of Wales. The cottages are traditionally furnished providing superior accommodation. Two have a private terrace which overlooks a large trout pool with lovely lawns, trees and surrounding farmland. Highgate is an ideal base for visiting Offa's Dyke, Powis Castle, for walking, bird watching and touring the lakes and mountains. But do not be deceived by the tranquillity, there is plenty going on here, including shooting, pony trekking, fishing, walking, narrow gauge railways, riding, canoeing, sailing and mountain biking. Newtown, 3 miles, is most attractive, with its street market on Tuesdays, here there is a swimming pool, sports centre, theatre, fishing and golf. Among the other small market towns nearby are Welshpool, Montgomery and LLanidloes with their castles, gardens, galleries and shops. A mile over the hill lies the New Inn, for a drink and a chat.

Owner profile

Sarah, hacking out in the mid-Wales countryside

About the owner
We, Chris and Sarah Smith are both nearing retirement age, we came to Highgate for a change in lifestyle, Previously Chris has been farming all his working life and Sarah alongside bringing up a family has worked in farm offices, keeping the books. This all took place in Berkshire, it was a big move to the Welsh borders, a delightful one, stunning countryside, very friendly neighbours, kind and considerate locals, what more could we ask for!

Year purchased: 2003

Why the owner chose a home in this location
When we came to Highgate, the farmhouse was surrounded by redundant farm buildings, initially we updated the farmhouse as much as we were allowed as it a listed building, new roof, new en-suites, new log burners and plumbing. We then set about converting all the old barns into cottages, three large barns of different shape and sizes into six cottages, all of which are full of character with vaulted ceilings, oak staircases and floors and underfloor heating. Two other barns have be made safe and secure for undercover parking etc. Bettws Cedewain is a small hamlet just a mile away with a thriving village Pub the New Inn. This area of mid-Wales is rural, it is magnificent countryside for rural pursuits, walking, down hill biking, shooting, fishing, golf and riding, plus many castles to visit.
