The house is a perfect mixture of old and new. The downstairs is decorated with wainscoating, the floors are old, wide-board pine and cherry wood. There are 3 fireplaces and French doors throughout. The overall affect is light and peaceful. The garden has a large front lawn, a mysterious bamboo forest, beautiful swimming pool and a wooded area. Shelter Island has many beautiful, pristine beaches, some, a bike ride away. One third of the island makes up the Mashomac nature reserve with miles of walking trails. For children there are camps including day camps specializing in riding, sailing and scoccer. Free outdoor concerts can be heard at the Itzak Perlman music camp. There are 2 golf courses, tons of tennis courts and many lovely restaurants. You can enjoy the world famous Hamptons just a half hours drive away but then be able to escape the traffic and bustle and return on the ferry to the calm of Shelter Island. New York City is 2 1/2 hours by bus, car or train.

Other: The master bedroom is very private with lovely views over the woods, a ceiling fan and fireplace. The house has a lower and upper porch, with outdoor furniture, a glimpse of the bay can be seen in the summer with a very good view in the winter.
Cleaning/towels/
linen/maid service:
Towels and linen are included, the house is cleaned before and after each rental, arrangements can be made for cleaning services during the rental.

 

Notes on accommodation
The house is wonderfully suited for children and is lovely at all times of the year. It is a holiday home and so is free of knick knacks and has a serene feel. There are bikes that can be used, though they are not in the best of shape. There is no air conditioning but there are ceiling fans and lots of screened windows with a good cross breeze. There are plenty of beach toys, games and outdoor chairs.

Accessibility
The house is not adapted for wheelchair users but the downstairs library could be adapted to be a bedroom.

Outside
There is a large front lawn facing south, which is lovely for playing games of football or cricket. The lower front porch has rocking chairs and there is small patio with a table and chairs. There are some adrirondack chairs on the upper porch. A bamboo forest flanks the left side of the property and behind the house is a shed, and a fenced in pool. The pool is 40' long is a grey/blue colour surrounded by lawn and patio. There is large out door dining area with teak furniture. A hammock hangs at the edge of the wood.

Coast/Beach
The nearest beach is about 4 minutes by car and 15 minutes by bike.
This is a beautiful, empty beach with a vista out on to Gardiner’s bay and very clear, calm water. There are barely any houses in sight. A beach suitable for young children and manned with a lifeguard is about 10 mins by car. The nearest Hampton beach with waves is about 30 minutes by car.

Golf
Everything on Shelter Island is no more than a 10 minute drive.
There are 2 golf courses.

Travel
Car hire is essential. JFK airport is 2- 2.5 hours by car, not including ferry ride.

Distances
The nearest supermarket is about 5 minutes by car, 15 by bike. The quaint village of Shelter island heights is about 10 minutes by car, there you will find a gourmet deli, bookshop, cafes, a pharmacy, a wonderful chandlery/hardware store. There is a fish shop with fresh lobster and the trendy restaurant and hotel Sunset Beach is about a 10-minute drive, the beach is a lovely place to watch the sunset. This is the only really lively spot on an otherwise very sleepy island.

Further details
Shelter island is well placed to visit the vinyards of the north fork and the quaint villages of Greenport and Orient. Sag harbor has a theatre, whaling museum and independant cinema along with lots of great shops and restaurants. New Engalnd can be reached quite easily by ferry from Orient. And of course all the joys of New York city are reachable on a day trip with the knowledge that green and calm await at the end of an intense day.
