Further details
The town is characterized as little New England by travel gurus and is known as the 'Antique capital' of Florida. The town's Lake Dora front setting features an ante-bellum Inn, said to be the oldest in Florida where you can sit in a rocking chair on the porch watching the sunset with a cold beer or home-made lemonade, dozens of shops, quaint eateries, and open air pubs, there's even a dog’s bakery there! Many visitors also liken Mount Dora to a cross between New Orleans and Key West. A world away from the commercialism of International Drive or housing estates of Kissimmee and Clermont. However the theme parks and attractions are less than 45 minutes away and the beaches less than two hours to either coast. This area offers all of the activities the beautiful state of Florida has to offer, yet comfortably away from the crowds. Ten minutes away are shopping malls, cinemas, numerous restaurants, grocery stores, golf courses, and a new state-of-the-art hospital.
A new Publix supermarket has just opened two minutes away.
Within a 5 minute stroll is the Jam Inn music pub or Norma Jeans Cafe for late evening drinks. In the main town two miles away are ample quaint eateries and antique shops - a Mecca for antique collectors! There are probably more interesting and varied antique dealers per square foot than any other place in Florida. The cultural calendar knows no season. Throughout the year, Mount Dora enjoys plays at the IceHouse Theatre, concerts and recitals by international artists at the Mount Dora Festival of Music Literature, gallery openings, and on-going exhibitions at the Mount Dora Center for the Arts. Directly behind the Center for the Arts on Royellou Lane is the Royellou Museum at the Old City Jail, providing a glimpse of Mount Dora life from the past to the present. Taking a cruise on the Dora Canal will bring you back in time.

Owner profile
About the owner
Phil Barnard lives in a 500 year old cottage in a small village just 19 miles north of London in the English Countryside. Oak Tree Villa is enjoyed and cherished by his whole family as a home from home when it happens to be available.
Year purchased: 2005
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I had visited Florida many times and in June 2004 my parents Bill and Gwen came with me for their first ever trip to the USA. We started on the East coast and drove to the Keys, and then up the Gulf Coast. No trip would be complete without a visit to a theme park. Looking at the maps we decided our last days should be spent within an easy distance of the Orlando parks and Sanford airport and so settled on Mount Dora, which we'd never heard of before. Both my parents have an interest in antiques and were delighted with the town. My Mum thought it the nicest place of the whole trip and wished that we had longer to stay there. Cont below.
Unique benefits of the property
Whilst browsing the Realtors down-town she commented on how nice it would be if she could afford to buy a vacation home there, for the whole family – her three children and 10 grand-children to enjoy at their leisure. Then on December the 16th 2004 she lost her 8 year battle with cancer. We sold her house and her estate was left to me and my two sisters. We decided to spend our inheritance on that dream home in Mount Dora that she had wanted for her family to enjoy.
