Converted Barn in Ancient Rum Town on Turkish Riviera
Rural Location, 2km to Nearest Beach
Sleeps 2/4 (1 Bedroom)
|
|
This beautifully restored barn is fully furnished to a high standard and air conditioned throughout (central heating and open log fires in winter months). Outside the shrubs and plants provide a haven for the wild tortoises that roam freely in the well tended garden. The garden also has grape vines, olive, fig, lemon, and almond trees as well as evening scented shrubs creating a relaxing ambience. Alacati boasts its "urban site" status that ensures the buildings are preserved in their original state, prevents multi-storey buildings in discord with Alacati's original architectural heritage. Additionally bars and discotheques cannot be opened in the town centre and the streets are free of tasteless plastic coffee house chairs.
NOTE: Turkey is not in the EURO zone so your British Pound buys the same as it did last year.

Alacati is a very fashionable old charming rum town that is being lovingly restored and preserved. Many famous Turkish celebrities come here to enjoy the evenings in the fashionable cafe/restaurants. Just take a stroll along the cobbled streets soaking up the history and atmosphere or enjoy an evening meal in one of the intimate cafe/restaurants that feature jazz music and live tango dancing. The streets are lined with old rum houses and tobacco and raisin stores that have been converted into art galleries, craft and antique shops. You can also visit the famous antique bazzar and organic produce market. For those who want a lively night life and a touch of salsa there are two beach night clubs open during the summer with well known European and Turkish bands and DJs. Owner profile
Wendy and Dave
About the owner
We are an English couple who lived in Saudi Arabia for 20 years. David retired from the British forces to teach communications. His last 10 years in Jeddah were spent working as a beach resort manager and Diving Instructor he was also instrumental in staring a reef conservation programme in the area. Wendy was a community midwife in Yorkshire, and then at a large military teaching hospital in Riyadh. She eventually moved to Jeddah to continue her career in nursing, midwifery management and education. Like David, Wendy was a keen scuba diver until back surgery forced her to stop. Having lived in the Middle East for so long we knew we could not return to England. We always took holidays in places where we could dive and possibly live, we were looking for the perfect place to settle.
Year purchased: 2003
Why the owner chose a home in this location
Browsing the internet one day we saw a picture of this property and knew it was for us, a visit to Turkey and further research about the country and the area confirmed that we were making the right decision and would realize our dream in this perfect location.
The old stone house and barn had been taken down stone by stone, the cleaned stones were used to re-build the house and barn. This is a unique property that has been tastefully restored. The main attraction of living in Alacati for us is the laid back Turkish atmosphere and ambiance of the old town during all seasons. We enjoy the summer season with all the café’s, bistro’s and avant-garde shops. Alacati caters mostly for the domestic tourist whilst welcoming foreign visitors. The locals are very friendly and helpful.
Unique benefits of the property
Other attractions are the proximity to beaches, thermal waters, the distance from an International airport and ferry port, excellent highway to Izmir and the airport, and of course the wonderful climate. David enjoys his daily 14km run in the hills around Alacati and growing his own vegetables. Wendy enjoys the colourful organic produce market on Saturdays and experimenting with Mediterranean / Turkish style cooking. Together they enjoy visiting and walking through the old small rural towns and villages in the area, particularly Ildir, one of the Ionian cities and Barbaros where the oldest olive press can be seen working during the winter months. We both enjoy meeting people and hosting them at The Barn, we hope you get the opportunity to enjoy The Barn and all Alacati has to offer.
