If you are looking for something different from the usual holiday villas in Kalkan, then Mulberry House is it. A refurbished country house, set in the mountain village of Islamlar, just 10 minutes drive from Kalkan. The village has a totally different feel from the coastal resorts. Mountain streams run abundantly to feed the nearby trout farms and restaurants, offering fresh fish and traditional local dishes – fried goat’s cheese and fresh, succulent aubergines. The air is fresher and the views stunning – pine forests, ancient Lycian rock tombs and the sea shimmering in the distance. Mulberry House was refurbished only four years ago with respect to the style and traditions of the past. It offers modern yet comfortable accommodation, and echoes the design details that are truly Turkish – Turkish rugs and wall hangings, hand made furniture crafted from solid wood sourced from local forests and scattered antiques such as chests, mirrors and pottery.

Notes on accommodation
The living area and bedrooms each have air conditioning units, enabling cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. Additionally, there is a ‘soba’ – a traditional Turkish wood burner - in the living area. Oil filled radiators are also supplied in the bedrooms for alternative heating.
Accessibility
The property is suitable for children but is not suitable for people with mobility problems or wheelchair users.
Outside
The property sits within its own grounds and is surrounded by grapevines and fruit trees. It has two large verandas, the upper one from the living area and the lower one from the bedrooms. There is a dining table and chairs on the upper veranda for alfresco dining and relaxing chairs on the lower veranda. The splash pool/jaccuzzi is private with access from the lower veranda. This winter we have had stairs built from the lower veranda down to the garden, thereby giving access from the house and splash pool to the garden. We have also laid a large decking area in the garden which provides ample space for sun bathing and dining. Here you will find a garden table and chairs, four sun loungers, two umbrellas and a barbecue. There is a brook at the bottom of the garden which babbles after rainfall. Native and migrating birds are abundant, as are squirrels and the neighbours’ goats and chickens!
Coast/Beach
Beaches are 15 minutes drive from the property. Patara Beach is 18km of sandy beach with parking and toilets and changing rooms plus cafe/restaurant. Kaputas Beach, often used in Turkish holiday adverts for its stunning setting and turquoise waters, is smaller with course sand and basic amenities. Kalkan town beach and beach clubs are 10 minutes drive away with full amenities.
Travel
Nearest airport is Dalaman, a 105 minute drive, with Antalya a 3 hour drive. We would recommend hiring a car for your stay at Mulberry House and would be happy to arrange this for you. Local car hire is currently around £25 per day inclusive of insurance etc. and will be charged separately. We are also happy to arrange airport transfers to make your journey here easier. Prices can vary and will be supplied on request. Please let us know in advance if these services are required.

Further details
The immediate locality is one of beautiful countryside and ancient sites. There are ancient rock tombs a short walk away and the famous Lycian Way – the Turkish equivalent to the National Trust public footpaths. The famous Islamlar trout restaurants are only 1 km away, as is the local village shop. The resort of Kalkan is a ten minute drive away with its excellent restaurants and exclusive boutiques. Here you will also find supermarkets, banks, chemists and health care along with all the usual holiday activities - water sports, paragliding, diving etc. You can also book day trips here. Slightly further afield are the ancient sites of Patara, Xantos and Tlos and the famous Saklikent Gorge. The nearby towns of Kas and Fethiye are also worth a visit at 25km and 80 km respectively.

Booking notes
Requests for bookings should be made direct to the owner via e-mail. 25% non-returnable deposit will be required at time of booking with the balance payable 6 weeks before the start of the booking. For those bookings less than six weeks' away, full payment will be required. All payments must be made via bank transfer, details of which will be supplied at time of booking. The property will not be considered booked until the deposit or full payment is received.

About the owner
Hi! My name is Tufan and although originally Turkish by birth, I moved to England when I was 10 years old. I lived and worked there for forty years before retiring in Turkey with my English wife, Christine. We live nearby to Mulberry House in Kalkan and so will be on hand should you require any help during your stay.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We both fell in love with the old village house that was to become Mulberry House. It was set in outstandingly beautiful countryside and surrounded by grape vines. It just needed someone to lovingly restore it. The village of Islamlar, although famous for its trout farm restaurants, is otherwise untouched by tourism. Local farmers go about their business as they have done for centuries - tending their sheep and goats and looking after their crops. They are always welcoming and up for a chat!
