Such is the splendour of this part of France that is has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upstream, the town of Amboise is home to one of the Loire Valley’s most celebrated chateaux. This building is a short drive from Tours gites and has an interesting story to tell. It was used by a succession of French kings, and when it was updated in the 15th Century it became one of the first buildings in France to have Renaissance design elements. A few minutes southeast of holiday villas in Tours is another beautiful old building. Chateau d’Azay-le-Rideau dates to the 16th Century and sits on an island in the Rideau River.
