Thurso is the most northerly town in mainland Scotland and is located on the coast of Caithness. From the coast the views take in the Orkney Islands and the cliffs of Dunnet Head. Thurso Area cottages are designed to provide good levels of comfort for guests and welcome shelter from the occasionally very strong winds that sweep the landscape. Cottages in Thurso Area can be found close to the coast which over the past couple of years has seen a major rise in visitors who come to surf here on the ever restless sea.

Gateway Location

Thurso has long been regarded as simply the gateway to the Orkneys, as this is where visitors come to catch the ferry to Stromness. Apartments in Thurso Area make the perfect place to rest before heading off on what is regarded as the best scenic tour route that Scotland has to offer her visitors, all 140 miles of the north and west rugged coastlines. Holiday accommodation in Thurso Area was at one time only accessible after navigating narrow dirt roads, but thankfully whilst some dirt tracks remain the majority now have been widened and provided with a proper road surface. If you do intend to drive around the area make sure you have fuelled up fully before you leave Thurso just in case.

Viking Past

The name of the village comes from its Viking past as the name in Old Norse means ‘Bull’s River’. Back in Viking times they fished the mouth of the river here and used the area as a base. In fact the fishing industry is the reason why the settlement developed and grew throughout medieval times. Holiday rentals in Thurso Area enable you to explore the ruins of Old St Peter’s Church which dates as far back as the 1100’s. It is a popular tourist attraction and a good reason to choose to stay in one of the many holiday homes in Thurso Area for your holiday.
