Owner profile
About the owner
My wife and I live and work in the middle of London. We travel a lot for business and pleasure especially in Asia, but have always felt a particular affinity to Switzerland and have been visiting on holiday for many years. We are keen musicians and enjoy playing music with friends living in Basle, Berne, Geneva, Verbier and, of course, Leukerbad.
Year purchased: 2006
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
We have always loved the Swiss alps and were looking for somewhere where we could combine walking in the summer with skiing in the winter. When we came across Leukerbad (having read about it in an Easyjet magazine!), which had both, plus the additional benefit of being the largest natural hot spring resort in Europe, we thought this was it. We fell in love with the dramatic setting of Leukerbad as soon as we visited in March even though there was a snow blizzard and we couldn't ski. Instead, we spent the weekend in the blissfully warm outdoor spa pool at the Alpentherm surrounded by snow and admiring the scenery. Since buying our comfortable flat 5 years ago we have spent many happy weeks here, often with friends and family (children love the Burgerbad) - it was a really great discovery.
Unique benefits of the property
Our flat is spacious and comfortable but what we love most about it is the view from the balcony. In the towering cliffs opposite (leading up to the famous Gemmi pass) on the other side of the valley, there is a little waterfall, and it is different every time we visit, sometimes gushing, sometimes almost dry, and it also freezes over mid-air in the middle of winter. Apart from that, we can see all sorts of birds flying over as well as hardy rock climbers winding their way up the cliffs (with the occasional dramatic helicopter rescue when they get stuck) - it's always interesting and you can spend hours sitting at the balcony, chatting, drinking, eating, watching, even if you are not busy yourself skiing, walking, cycling or enjoying the waters.
