Accessibility
The chalet is a very short walk from the car park. There are 8 outside steps up to the chalet's front door. The chalet would not be suitable for the less able or for wheelchair access. Given the location of Les Masses and the chalet, in the winter, it is essential that you have a car with snow chains or a 4WD car. Winter tyres are mandatory in Switzerland.
Outside
Chalet Bex has one large balcony and a patio area, with sun awning, with a large table and bench plus two separate chairs for you to sit and admire the views, both accessed from the kitchen. There is a small upper balcony accessed from the upstairs landing.
Coast/Beach
Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) is about an hour away and offers water activities plus one of the most famous castles in Switzerland, Chateau Chillon, sits on the edge of the Lac. There are thermal baths in Leukerbad, Saillon and Lavey (nr Aigle), all about 45 mins-1 hour drive away.
Golf
There are plenty of golf courses in the Valais. The nearest is in Sion, about 20 minutes away. There is a championship golf course in Crans Montana, about 45 minutes away and one in Verbier, about 1 hour away.
Skiing
Les Masses is part in the 4 Vallees and the chalet is just 3 minutes drive from the 2-man chairlift. The 4 Vallees has 410 km of runs and the ski area closest to the chalet offers some lovely skiing, boarding and off-piste opportunities as well as some more gentle slopes for beginners - in addition it is far less busy than the ski area around Verbier. The world famous Piste De L'Ours is nearby, just below Thyon Les Collons. You can get to Mont Fort above Verbier in about an hour and the whole area offers some of the best skiing, boarding and off-piste skiing in Europe.
With a car, you can also access some charming local ski resorts such as Evolene, Nax, Ovrannaz to name some as well as the internationally renowned resorts of Crans Montana, Zermatt and Saas Fee. The ski area opens around mid December and remains open to mid April.
Travel
Nearest int'l airport is Geneva which is about 2 hours drive away. BA, Swiss and Easyjet all fly from the UK. The train time to Sion is just under 2 hours and trains run every 30 minutes or so. Snowjet has started flying from Stansted to Sion Airport, making this one of the quickest transfer times - Sion to the chalet of just 20 minutes. It is essential that you have a 4WD car or a car with winter tyres (mandatory) and snow chains. It is 9hrs drive from Calais.
Distances
Chalet Bex is at 1500 metres. Sion is 20 minutes away. The local villages of Heremence and Les Collons 5-10 mins away. The local Val D'Herens offers some fabulous walking, the whole area is a network of some well-signposted stunning walks - easily accessible, taking anywhere from 20 - 50 minutes to reach and is littered with charming old Valais villages. Lac Lehman, Montreux and Lausanne are 1 hr or so away. Verbier is an hour away, Chamonix slightly further.
Further details
The nearest cafe and shop is in Les Masses, 3 mins drive away which sells all the essentials. The ski hire shop is in Les Collons. In the villages of Les Collons, Heremence and Vex, there are several restaurants, bakers, butchers, banks/ATMs, supermarkets and a chemist. The larger supermarkets (Co-Op & Manor) are in Sion. There is a Michelin* restaurant 10 minutes away and another in Sierre. Sion, one of Switzerland's oldest towns has two chateaux, a cathedral, museum, plenty of shops, some good restaurants and an open-air market every Friday.
In winter, there is usually snow from Dec-April and there are many snow cannons. There is night skiing, snow shoeing, tobogganing - the local tourist agency organises many activities. In the summer, the weather in the Valais can be hot but cooler up the mountains. Evolene, Les Hauderes, La Sage, pretty traditional Valais villages, are 20-30 mins away. The whole area offers great walks and/or biking for all abilities. In August, some of the main lifts are open so you get the lift up and walk or bike down. Arolla - a walkers and climbers paradise, is about 40 minutes away (part of the Haute Route from Chamonix). The meadows are full of flowers, cows with bells on and you can sometimes see local people in their traditional dress. Further afield you can visit Zermatt, Saas Fee, drive to the Italian Lakes or Milan (or get the train, it takes 2 hours) or take the Glacier Express from Brig (about 45 mins away) - a wonderful train journey through the mountains to St. Anton.
There is a tennis court in Les Masses, swimming in Thyon, riding in Vex, wine tasting in the valley, bisse walks in Veysonnaz and Nendaz, rock climbing etc. Local children activity areas in Sion, Vercorin and nr Bex.
There is a local chef who can deliver gourmet prepared meals to your doorstep.
There is so much to do, too numerous to mention here but there are lots of brochures, local walking books and guide books at the chalet for your use.

Owner profile
About the owner
Since I bought Chalet Bex, I spend a lot of time in Switzerland, not only in the winter season but throughout the year. I just love it there whatever the season. All my family and friends have fallen in love with the area.
Year purchased: 2006
Why the owner chose a home in this location
Whatever the weather, the whole area is stunning. I never knew that mountains could be so beautiful without snow. I thought I was buying a ski chalet, little realising that I was buying a whole lot more.
I love skiing in the area and the fact you can ski to/from Verbier in the day is great but I like the local ski areas as much. I love the beauty, the peacefulness, the simplicity and traditional feel of the local villages, mountain life, the walks, the flowers, the local animals, the views, the mountain air, watching the weather. They say that the Valais is the sunshine state of Switzerland - the sun does shine a lot! I also like the fact that everywhere is so accessible, from the Italian Lakes, Geneva, Zermatt, Sion - there is so much to do and see whatever the season.
