Les Fauvettes is an antique wood-clad chalet of 11 apartments. Ours is lower ground floor facing west through French windows to the mountains, great for sundowners and bbq's on patio and lawn. The main 'Medran' gondolas are just 100 metres away, giving almost ski-in/ski-out convenience Xmas - Easter to the huge 4 valleys system. There are lots of shops, bars etc. nearby, and the town centre is just 600 metres away. Lifts are run in summer, up to 3,300m/11,000ft, giving access to tremendous walks, mountain bike trails, parasailing, and views of the Matterhorn round to Mt Blanc. The town runs an internationally renowned 2-week music festival and other events; a superb sports centre for swimming (indoor and heated outdoor pools), tennis, skating etc. Golf: a par-3 & a testing par-70 scenic course, also Crans Montana 45 mins. Vineyards are not far below, giving an idea of the summer climate - Italy via the St Bernard, or Chamonix via the Forclaz are lovely easy day tours.

Notes on accommodation
Accommodation is best for up to 4; hot water is from a night-store tank, so runs short - quick showers in afternoon needed. The sofa bed is excellent - quick to convert, very comfortable, and does not sag! The mattress is 6'6" long x 5' wide (2ms x 1.5ms). Access to our underground garage space and private parking area is guaranteed via a heated driveway. (The Google Map road picture is now out of date - vehicle and pedestrian access is direct, about 100ms from the Medran lift station.)

Outside
Paved patio beneath balconies with picnic table and benches, leading onto lawn with extensive mountain views. Portable barbecue, 3 assorted sunloungers/deckchairs.

Golf
Verbier has a testing par-70 course on the upper outskirts of town. You are taken up to the first tee by minibus, then gradually descend through the first 14 holes, after which use a buggy to complete the final 4 holes, where a bit of uphill journey is involved - or hire a buggy for the whole round. (There is a good value June & September offer of 2 rounds with buggy and fondue lunch with wine.) Sion and Crans Montana are about 45 mins away - and if you borrow our Geneva-based minibus for your holiday, there is plenty space for clubs etc. There is also a well-maintained par-3 course in town.

Skiing
Verbier is one of the most highly regarded ski resorts in the world, with a huge ski area on the '4-Valleys' lift pass, altitude range 1,500m/5,000ft - 3,330m/11,000ft, fully integrated. Much upgrading of lifts has made long queueing history, and the extensive amount of medium blue and red run skiing at high altitude gives assured skiing for all abilities throughout the season. Powder opportunities are immense. Great boarders park. Also, for good skiers, a day at the Super St Bernard area (suppl't on the lift pass), is a must-do, with challenging red and black runs on its north side, and a 10 km off-piste marked run (conditions permitting) down into Italy on the south, returning by coach through the St B. tunnel. Family lift pass v.g. value: e.g. children various discounts, depending on age, then additional 15% reduction for family of 3 or more for 3-day or greater passes - (6-day pass 10 - 11: Verbier Fr326, 4-Valleys Fr348 - for reductions old & young contact owner.

Travel
Our deluxe minibus is parked walking distance Geneva airport. (See 'further details' + weblink below). Borrow it for a contribution to expenses. Geneva Airport is 160kms/100miles mostly autoroute, 1.5-2 hours drive. The final road up has no danger from avalanche, so access in/out is not under threat. Train option - wheel baggage from carousel to train, change at Martigny, bus or gondola from Le Chable to Verbier. By car, Verbier is one of the closest Alpine resorts, possible in one day from UK.

Distances
Aosta, Roman walled town through/over St Bernard, 120km/75 m; Chamonix, Mt Blanc over Forclaz Pass (French National Park), 65km/40m; Montreux 70km/45m; Evian, Rhone Glacier, Crans/Montana, Zermatt, all +/- 1 hour.

Owner profile

About the owner
My wife and I both worked for British Airways, she at Cologne Airport and me flying as a captain out of Heathrow. Recently retired, we ski a lot in Verbier, but also with the BA Ski Club, mostly in Austria staying in hotels - the contrast between the styles of the two countries, and with the self-catering life in 'Les Fauvettes,' adds to the enjoyment. After recent publicity about scams involving holiday lettings that turn out not to exist, note that we have been renting out our apartment for many years, with a lot of repeat business, and you will have our home address and phone number in UK for reassurance.

Year purchased: 1980's

Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
The convenience and speed of flying to Geneva, picking up our minibus there, and the 2-hour journey up to Verbier, was, and still is, a great catalyst for owning the apartment here. We have had the apartment from new in 1980, and have gradually improved what it offers in the ensuing years. We like the variety we get from other resorts in other countries, but Verbier has its special attributes which we love to come back to, year on year, winter and summer. Our apartment, whilst not huge, is well-planned, comfortable and warm - we hope you will like it too.

Unique benefits of the property
Undoubtedly the best winter feature of 'Les Fauvettes' is its closeness to the Medran lifts - Verbier is a very big town now - such that we often ski back for lunch, then return to the slopes in the afternoon. But self-catering also means that picnics are easy to prepare, so on nice days we frequently prefer this to using the mountain restaurants, carrying a beer & a flask of wine, with perhaps classic pate-filled baguettes, then finding a scenic spot, well away from the piste, to enjoy it all in peace. If we can still slide around gently to such spots when we're very old, we'll be well content! In summer, our patio beside the lawn, facing west to a lovely view, gets warm sun until after 8pm - great for lunch & evening barbecues.
