The city of La Rochelle is only 30 kilometres from villas in Surgeres, and is a beautiful old port with a fascinating history. It’s been a vital centre for shipbuilding since medieval times and boasts a number of attractions relevant to its maritime heritage. Perhaps the most impressive is the aquarium - Europe’s largest – and an absolute must-see for anyone visiting holiday accommodation in Charente Maritime. Marais Poitevin is another essential attraction not far from Surgeres farmhouses. This idyllic area boasts unspoiled forest and wetland, which you can explore via canals and rivers. Also close by are interesting towns like Cognac, where the brandy originated, while if you head towards the very south of the department you can catch a ferry into Aquitaine and the Medoc wine region.
