'La Casa de la Puerta Verde' is situated in the old part of Roda De Bara, a thriving Catalan town with all amenities, including swimming pool and tennis courts. There is relatively little North European tourism despite some of the best Roman remains outside Italy, 3 Cistercian Monasteries and an adventure park! The local beach, which is sandy and slopes gradually underwater, has won a prize. The town’s 'Fiesta' with music, dancing and events for children runs in the last week of August and first week of September. Roda de Bara has a strong sense of tradition and a busy cultural life so there are other festivities and processions throughout the year.

Notes on accommodation
The wall at the end of the garden, overlooking the ravine, is low. So small children need to be supervised. The house has very thick walls which make it cool in summer and retain warmth when its cooler.
Accessibility
The property is not ideal for wheelchair users since the bedrooms are on the first floor up a flight of stairs.
Outside
The leafy garden is accessed by a patio with the following facilities - table and chairs, two chaise lounges and barbecue. The garden (perfect for personal yoga) is simple to maintain, but full of character. The plants are indigenous and thrive on whatever active watering we, friends and visitors can supply. The almond tree was big and old when we came, thus ripe for suggestion that it be axed and replaced. Now benefiting from the patio and more water, it is blossoming again and fruits in late September. We planted the orange tree, which flowers around Easter. The patio is covered in summer by a canvas awning.
Coast/Beach
The beach is 5 minutes drive from the house or 30 minutes walk. There is also a regular bus service. The local, prize-winning beach is good for walking and reassuring for children as it slopes slowly above and underwater. The beach is served by three restaurants and cafes in summer times. There are boat hire and water skiing facilities here and the marina at Roc San Gaieta is a short cliff walk away, alongside a gorgeous view of the Mediterranean.
Golf
There is a golf course on the way to Tarragona, about 10 miles away.
Travel
From Barcelona airport, it is 80kms and from Reus 50kms. The house can also be accessed in an hour by train from Barcelona - Sants station, which is a major intersection for trains from the rest of Europe. Car hire is recommended since some worthwhile sites lie slightly off the beaten track.
Distances
Barcelona, with its museums, shops, restaurants and general vibrance is easily accessed as a day trip by train. Tarragona, with its Roman remains, is 18km away. The walled town of Mont Blanc is 30kms away. Espluga de Francoli and the Prehistoric Caves and the monastery of Poblet are 50km away. Santa Creus Cisternian monastery is 25kms away.
Further details
There are several Spanish Banks in Roda de Bara as well as small supermarkets and independent shops that sell local products. There is a very well known bakery/cafe with wonderful local cakes. Each festivity has different cakes and sweets. For example there are 'Cocas' for Easter with a little figure of a king inside. The person finding this 'king' has to pay for the cake! There is a yacht marina in Roc San Gaieta. In Torredembarra, 15km away, there is more boat hire and sailing classes.

Guest comments
'We enjoyed so much our stay in your house and are hoping to come back next year. The peace of the patio and our chats there in the evening made our stay very special. John loved to barbecue nearly every evening so the work of self catering was a pleasure. The local swimming pool was a very good asset because our kids could find Spanish friends and play tennis. We loved the small restaurant in the premises.' - Debbie Maulhearn.
