Casa Tagomago
Casa Tagomago

We have carefully restored Casa Tagomago using traditional methods and materials, such as chestnut beams and terracotta floor tiles. Furnishings, in keeping with the style of the house, are comfortable and attractive, with special attention given to paintings and wall hangings. All conveniences of life today are to hand, making the house suitable for holidays and short breaks all year round. From its privileged position on the edge of the village, high above the beautiful terraces sloping down to the Rio Santo and Lake Beznar, every room in the house, as well as the patio and the roof terrace, enjoys the same panoramic views. For a family or group of friends, Casa Tagomago offers the opportunity of a relaxing pool side holiday, as well as visits to Granada and all its wonders. Walks in the Valley or in Sierra Nevada National Park, swimming or sailing on La Costa Tropical are other options. Jaen, Almeria and Malaga are easily accessible. Don't forget the many hours of sun or the Tapas!

Notes on accommodation
The house is heated with night storage heaters, as well as the wood burning stove. Both bathrooms have heaters.
In the summer, due to the thickness of the walls and its elevated position, the house is pleasantly cool.

Accessibility
We have prepared the downstairs shower room, and double bedroom, for guests with impaired mobility and all doors are the required width on this floor.
Like so many houses in the valley, parking outside the house is not possible but it is possible to park within 20 metres.

Outside
One of our main objectives when restoring the house was to make the patio as spacious as possible, to be able to enjoy the small pool with its fountain. With loungers and a large parasol, it is ideal for sunbathing and relaxing, as well as having space for 'al fresco' dining, under the pergola, with the Lecrin Valley and Sierra Nevada as a spectacular backdrop. The roof terrace has its own table, chairs, loungers and parasol, as well as the barbecue. Ideal for hot summer evenings or warm winter days. We enjoy having our breakfast on the patio, even in March.

Coast/Beach
The beaches of Motril and Salobrena are about 30 minutes by car. Salobrena is a particularly attractive village high on a rock on the coast, with a wonderful Moorish castle, well worth a visit, and with long sandy beaches, and excellent restaurants, serving fish and rice dishes. Information in the house. Almunecar and Nerja are not far away, the journey made shorter by the new road. Nerja has a good car boot sale every Sunday. There are more beaches worth visiting all along the Costa Tropical.

Golf
There are golf courses nearer Granada. More information on request.

Skiing
The ski resort Sol y Nieve in Sierra Nevada can be reached by car - about 55 minutes from the house. There is also a good bus service up to the resort from a car park in Granada.

Travel
Granada airport 40 minutes. Malaga airport about 1 hour 50 minutes away.
Car essential. Good and reasonable car hire at both airports.

Distances
The three bars and the restaurant, the baker and the shops in the village are within a few minutes walk from the house. Melegis is 15 minutes walk and Saleres about 30 minutes. Durcal, 10 minutes drive, has larger shops, and an excellent market on Wednesdays. The spa town of Lanjaron, "the Gateway to La Alpujarra" is 20 minutes away. Granada is only 30 minutes away. Jaen is about 1 hour and 45 minutes drive and Malaga 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Further details
Restábal also boasts a chemist and a tobaccanist. All the villages are visited daily by the local bakers, butchers, fishmongers etc selling their goods from their vans. Apart from visiting the picturesque white villages in the Lecrin Valley, there are a wealth of other worthwhile excursions. A visit to the Alhambra, in Granada, is not to be missed, as well as a wander round the narrow streets of the Albaicin and the Realejo. Cultural activities are continuous, with concerts, plays and the wonderful dance festival in June each year, high on the list. Not to mention the Cathedral and museums. Tapas of course are the best way to taste the cuisine in Granada, and there are a number of Moroccan tea rooms (teterias), serving all sorts of teas and delicious little cakes. There are also several well known department stores in the city, and the Alcaiceria, a Moroccan market, with intriguing stalls.
Jaen is also a very interesting city, with an imposing cathedral and the castle of Santa Catalina dominating the whole city. A visit to La Alpujarra is a really special way to spend a day, a typical mountain road leads one along the southern side of the Sierra Nevada up into the mountains and the villages of Capileira, Pampaneira, Bubion and Trevelez, just to name a few, with their unique architecture, and captivating scenery, and mountain cuisine.
Back to the Valley and almost on our doorstep we have the GR7/E4 walking route, the whole area is a walkers paradise, and botanical and ornithological enthusiasts will also find plenty to interest them, both in the Valley and in Sierra Nevada. Fiestas in Andalucia are always a treat, with something for everyone to enjoy. Local people are very friendly to visitors, and are delighted when they join in with the festivities. More details of all these activities are in the house book, including booking details for La Alhambra, always best to book in advance, specially in high season.

Vicente who stayed at the house over Easter 2010 said :
"I can only say that I fell completely in love with the house. It is not only beautiful, it is very well equipped, lacking nothing. The refurbishment is excellent, the decor, materials and the rustic furniture are simply exceptional. As it is not far from the A44, the journey to Granada or the coast is quick and easy. And it is the best base for visiting the Alpujarra. The Valley is enchanting, not just to the sight but also to the rest of the senses. Don't forget to try the local meat and sausages!
I wouldn't like to end without thanking everyone involved in the running of the house for the treatment received, their professionalism and the organisation."

Nicola - August 2011 says: "Excellent, just beautiful. Thoroughly clean, ready and well equipped. We most liked the atmosphere, the peace and quiet and the superb quality of the restoration. We loved the small villages and our visit to the Alhambra was a highlight".

Owner profile

Outside Casa Tagomago, November 2010.

About the owner
We have lived in Ibiza for over 40 years. I am English and my husband, Frutos, is Spanish. We ran our two toy shops in Ibiza until our retirement in 2009.

Year purchased: 2005

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We decided to buy a house in 2005, 4 years before retiring, and we chose Granada as it is a very "manageable" city with such a wide cultural offer, as well as having so much enchantment for us. When we first arrived in the Lecrin Valley to house hunt we were captivated by the countryside and the villages. The situation is absolutely ideal for us, as it is such a novelty to be able to tour around to so many wonderful places within such easy reach from the house, after so many years of living on a small (and beautiful) island. So now we have the best of both worlds. We thoroughly enjoyed the restoration work on the house, which we have tried to make as welcoming as possible. We certainly love spending time there, at any time of the year and hope that our visitors enjoy it as much.
