The house was built in the 1980s and is set in a quiet, gated development 2 streets up from Sanlucar's glorious sandy beach. We bought the house 20 years ago and have enjoyed it as our second/holiday home filling it in the summer with family and friends. It is furnished comfortably and simply but has all the character of a house well used and loved. Outside, there is a large south facing patio which opens on to the private street (vehicular access and parking for owners' cars only) making it safe for children. It is a 5 minute walk to the main square (Plaza Cabildo) with its famous tapas bars and nearby covered market and an easy stroll along the new sea front promenade to the Bajo de Guia - well known for its fish restaurants and views over the Guadalquivir river to the Coto Donana national park. The house is a perfect base for exploring south west Spain, sampling the local cuisine and manzanilla sherry or just soaking up the sun on one of the many beaches of the Costa de la Luz.

Coast/Beach
Sanlucar is set at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and has a beautiful shell-encrusted beach just two minutes walk from the house. In the summer the beach is served by five restaurants (chiringuitos) and good shower/wc facilities. Further down the coast lies the town of Chipiona (9km away) with another lovely beach and the new resort of Costa Ballena. In addition to the Sanlucar beach on our doorstep we love the seaside around El Puerto de Sta Maria and the coastline south of Cadiz.
Golf
There is a golf course on the outskirts of town.
Travel
Jerez airport is 20 kms away and since the building of a new ring road bypassing Jerez town itself and the dualling of the carriage way to Sanlucar the journey time is now a predictable 25 minutes. Taxi approx. 38 euros. Ryanair flies daily to Jerez and also to Seville (100km away). Car hire is available at both airports as are taxis. Just behind our house is a new bus station with a regular service to Jerez, Cadiz, El Puerto de Sta Maria and Seville.
Distances
Seville: 75 minutes.
Jerez de la Frontera: 20 minutes.
Cadiz: 45 minutes or drive to El Puerto de Sta Maria and take the 'vapor' (ferry) across the Bay of Cadiz which takes 30 minutes.
Further details
Sanlucar has a wide range of banks and the house is close to two large supermarkets and a selection of smaller shops, bars and restaurants. There is a shopping mall 'Las Dunas' which opened in March 2008 on the outskirts of town and a new multiplex cinema 5 minutes walk from the house. The town has a thriving sherry industry based around the exclusive production of Manzanilla and most bodegas offer tours and tastings. Across the river is the Coto Donana National Park - the largest of its kind in Europe - which can be visited by boat aboard the Real Fernando or in a 4x4 which explores further into the park. In May the town hosts its 'feria de la manzanilla' - a 5 day celebration of eating, drinking, singing and dancing flamenco and at about the same time (coinciding with Pentecost) Sanlucar is the starting point for the annual pilgrimage to El Rocio in the Donana park. Hundreds of ox or horse drawn carts, caravans and wagons congregate to cross the river offering a colourful spectacle of a particularly Andalusian custom. In August, another unique event occurs which is the annual horse races along the beach at low tide - a tradition which dates back 200 years. These are just some of the highlights of life in Sanlucar which have enchanted us for twenty years. But aside from the main events, Sanlucar has a fascinating history, a beautiful location and a charm which has resisted the worst excesses of mass tourism.
