Buses and taxis regularly leave from Plaza Nueva to visit the Alhambra palace. This 3 bedroom apartment sleeps 6 in complete comfort and has been lovingly restored using traditional materials and styles so popular in Granadine/Moorish architecture. Features include traditional clay tiles to the exterior, slate tile flooring within and vintage Granadine tiles in the bathroom and kitchen. Notes on accommodation
The apartment is non-smoking but you may smoke outside on the balconies or inner courtyard. Newly installed reverse cycle air-conditioning system in the living area and master bedroom which provides rapid heating as well as air-conditioning. Also, additional wall heaters in all three bedrooms and living area which will provide adequate background heat in the cooler months. The apartment is arranged over one level and would be suitable for families. A DVD player and flat screen television is also provided for your use.

Accessibility
The apartment is located in the historical old quarter of the Albayzin which is set on a slope and largely inaccessible by car due to the narrow old streets. The apartment is in the lowest part of this old Medina. It is 5 minutes walk from Plaza Nueva in the town centre, where the nearest taxis and buses can be accessed. Unfortunately this means that (like other properties in the old town) it is not readily accessible to those needing wheelchair access.

Outside
There is a central enclosed shared courtyard in this beautifully restored sixteenth century building. Two of the three bedrooms have private balconies which face out onto a quiet street and have Alhambra glimpses. The third bedroom has double doors opening inwards to give views of the central courtyard and sky above. The whole property is very light and airy with plenty of traditional shuttered windows which block out the light completely for a sound nights sleep or can be flung open on a sunny day. The thick walls and traditional tiled roof all serve to keep you cool on a hot day.

Coast/Beach
The coastal region of the Costa Tropical is just 45 minutes drive away.

Golf
There are 2 18 hole golf courses within a half hour drive of the apartment - the City of Granada and Santa Clara golf clubs.

Skiing
There is wonderful skiing nearby in the Sierra Nevada mountains where you can ski on up to eighty different pistes whilst enjoying views over the Mediterranean sea. On a clear day it is possible to see as far as the coast of North Africa. The ski resort, which is situated at 2100 metres, is just a 45 minute drive away.

Special interest holidays
There are mainy paining, photography and language courses locally.

Travel
Nearest airport is Granada Jaen. An airport bus leaves regularly for the town, takes 40 minutes and costs 3 euros. You will need to be able to speak Spanish to the driver. Ask to be dropped off at the Cathedral (nearest bus stop). Alternatively take a taxi to Plaza Nueva which takes 20 minutes and costs 25 euros. Malaga airport has many UK flights - 75 mins by taxi, approx 130 euros (159 on Sundays). Buses also run from central Malaga to Granada bus station.

Distances
5 minute walk to Plaza Nueva in the centre of town and 15 minute walk to the Alhambra Palace (which can also be reached by bus or taxi from Plaza Nueva). If you drive, there are public car parks within 5-10 mins (ask us).

Further details
The apartment is located in the lower part of the historic old Medina of Granada known as the Albaycin. It is a UNESCO world heritage site which is full of wonderful old buildings and narrow cobbled streets. New developments are strictly controlled but some of the old Carmen's have been restored - our apartment is set in one of the oldest buildings in the area which was beautifully and sensitively reformed in 2007. The Alhambra palace is set on the opposite hillside facing the Albayzin and is stunning, especially when lit up in the evenings. There is a park near to the apartment where you can sit and take in the views, or perhaps paint or take photographs of the Alhambra. The apartment is set in a very peaceful cobbled side street which does not get much foot traffic and is too narrow to be bothered by passing cars. Despite this it is just a couple of minutes by foot to the hustle and bustle of the nearest tapas bars as well as Arabic cafes and street stalls selling numerous colourful North African and local souvenirs. The owners can help to advise you on the best places to eat and drink, or you can enjoy exploring on your own. Either way, we are sure you will find some wonderful tapas and dining experiences in Granada. Granada is one of the few regions of Spain where free tapas is still served with your drinks. Seafood is a local speciality but a wide variety of delicacies is available. There is also a small local convenience store just around the corner from the apartment, or food and drink can be bought from supermarkets or department stores in town. 'El Corte Ingles' is probably the closest, within 10 minutes by foot. There is also a great variety of clothes and shoes stores to explore in Granada.

Owner profile

About the owner
We bought this wonderful apartment as a holiday home for ourselves and our small children. We are an English/Australian couple. We love it because Granada has a fantastic atmosphere and very friendly people. Children are also welcome everywhere you go which makes a lovely change from bars and restaurants in some other parts of the world. The Alhambra palace and gardens are really peaceful to take a stroll around. the Albayzin itself is very historic with lots of little cobbled streets and a definite buzz about it. It is so convenient for so many things that we never need to bring a car to Granada. We loved that our traditional apartment had been newly refurbished from a 500 year old finca and is built around a pretty courtyard. We hope that out guests enjoy our apartment as much as we have

Year purchased: 2007
