Coast/Beach
Costa de la Luz, the 'coast of light' is known for its wide-open beaches illuminated by dazzling sunlight and beautiful sunsets. A genuinely unspoilt costa, it has stunning scenery. The villa is a 5 minute drive to the beach and centre of the seaside town of Sanlucar. Take a stroll down to the beach at sunset and you will come face to face with the Gualdalquivir River where it in turn meets the Atlantic. This is the river that bore Columbus and McGellan out to sea on their great voyages.

Golf
Sanlucar Golf Club can be found on a gentle rolling slope facing the Gualdalquivir estuary next to the Atlantic and the Donana nature reserve in Sanlucar de Barrameda. The 18 hole course, designed by the Spanish Amateurs champion, Borja Queipo de Llano, combines elements of a British links and boasts parkland elements: 7 lakes, high teeing areas and abundance of trees, as well as fast greens in perfect condition. Its ingenious design makes the Sanlucar course favourable for players of all levels. The route is demanding but at the same time extremely enjoyable. The careful integration of the course into the relief of the landscape awards it a comfortable and attractive feel. A respect for nature has been a fundamental premise in the conception of this project. The clubhouse provides restaurant, bar, terrace, changing room, golf school and caddy master services. The bar gives you the chance to relax and sample some of the traditional tapas of the region. Reduced rates for villa rentals.

Further details
Sanlucar de Barrameda is a delightful town, situated at the northern tip of the sherry triangle. Famous for its Manzanilla wine, which is traditionally drunk with the local seafood in the numerous tapas bars. The town is divided into the old quarter, the Barrio Alto where most of the old Moorish architecture can be found and the newer Barrio Bajo close to the river. In Plaza del Cabildo, a square lined with orange trees and framed by a pair of impressive pines;this is the heart of town life and a great place to sit and watch the world go by. Meet at the fountain and then choose a tapas bar that takes your fancy. Casa Balbino is always our first stop for tapas. It serves great mojama (cured tuna), the best tortillas de camarones (lace thin shrimp fritters), gambas, langostinos, lobster and a variety of fish, seafood and meat tapas. Slightly less manic is the Barbiana and Juanitos tapas bars with good house manzanilla and their own specialities. The Bajo de Guia is the area known for its water front seafood restaurants and trendy bars. The views are fantastic and the seafood is the freshest you will ever taste. There are many local bodegas producing their own versions of the famous manzanilla wine, most are open for guided tours and wine tasting everyday. The Feria de Manzanilla takes place in May 2008 and the famous Sanlucar horse racing along the miles of golden beach, dating back to 1498, takes place in August. Parque Nacional de Donana is a protected landscape. During spring, the park attracts millions of species of birds and many different kinds of animals including the lynx. Bull fights take place in the Plaza de Torros throughout the year. In the summer months Sanlucar is alive with music festivals and theatre groups. At the golf club bar and restaurant 'Chary' and her partner will make you feel very welcome, she serves home made local tapas and will supply you with fresh fish and BBQ requirements. There are currently 2 other bars on this new development.

Owner profile

All the family at our local sailing club

About the owner
Richard and I live in the north east and spend much of our time at a local sailing club on the North Yorkshire coast near Whitby. Richard is in shipping and I am a school adviser and inspector. Our eldest son, Ben was married summer 2011 and our youngest son married last summer. We enjoy walking in the winter with our two black Labradors and a bit of skiing on the North Yorkshire moors. We all spend as much time at the villa as we can - which is why we don't rent out for many months of the year. We fell in love with the area 4 years ago - Ben actually proposed in Sevilla- it is far removed from the English influences on other Costas- we prefer the very traditional Spanish tapas bars, local seafood, fish and sherry. We are trying hard to improve our Spanish but the locals are very helpful!

Year purchased: 2006

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Having only ever visited Costa Blanca and Coste del Sol -which we hated!! We were intrigued when a colleague told us about the unspoilt Spanish Costa de la Luz. We immediately fell in love with its Spanish history and traditions and NO English influence. We loved the wild beaches, traditional sherry bodegas and fabulous tapas bars- but most of all the people. They are friendly, polite, caring and genuinely enjoy our company even with our Spanglish! We have made many good friends- our best friend is now our property manager who will give you personal service from the minute you arrive. We bought the villa off plan and having made friends with a local hotel owner he helped us to furnish it in a traditional Andalucian style. We visit regularly to check on the standard of the property.

Unique benefits of the property
The villa has fantastic views over the Donna National Park - birds including storks, kestrels, ibis and eagles are frequently seen close by. We have a local gardener who checks on the garden regularly although we do like to improve the garden each time we visit by adding more plants. We like to think that you will find the villa completely equipped and we make sure that you do not have to go and buy basic essentials such as toilet rolls, soap, washing powder, tea and coffee when you arrive as so often happens with rental properties. We also provide two pool towels each - (one is never enough) and beach chairs, although we do ask that you bring your own beach towels. There's plenty of line drying space in the garden or if you visit in the cooler months as we also have a tumble drier!
