Casa Ana is a 400-year-old property in the quiet hamlet of Ferreirola in the Alpujarras in Andalucia. Once an important family home with a wine press, olive store, barn and stables, the house has recently been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard, providing comfortable and stylish accommodation for 10 with south-facing terraces, a garden and dramatic views of the Trevelez river gorge. Ferreirola is close to the Sierra Nevada National Park and a 75-minute drive from Granada and the nearest Mediterranean beaches. There is easy access by road from Malaga airport (2.25 hours) and buses and taxis are also available from Malaga and Granada. Bars, cafes and restaurants are within walking distance of the house, and Pitres, with its shops, weekly market and amenities, is a 10-minute drive away. With one of the best climates in Europe, the area is perfect for walking, horse-riding and mountain hiking as well as simply relaxing in the sun and getting away from it all.

Notes on accommodation
At Casa Ana everything is as beautiful as we can possibly make it. The bedrooms and dining room are all white walled with original chestnut beams and terracotta floors, scattered with rugs and kilims. Local craftsmen helped to create the interiors: the dark wooden windows and doors, Moorish ceramic tiles and large earthenware pots were all made for the house.

Thick stone walls keep the rooms cool in summer and in winter they are warmed with under floor heating. Additional comforts include high pressure rain showers in the bathrooms, a wood-burning stove in the dining room, and in the bedrooms, comfortable beds with high quality linens and warm lighting.

Outside, the garden and terraces are planted with roses and jasmine and are extremely quiet and peaceful, with dramatic views of the mountains and the river valley below the house.

Accessibility
The layout at Casa Ana provides reasonable access because three of the bedrooms are situated on one level. However, the accommodation has not been specifically modified for wheelchair users. To reach the house there is a walk of about 120m from the plaza. There are also some wide, shallow steps to access the apartment. Please feel free to contact Anne the owner discuss your requirements before booking.

Outside
The French doors from the living area lead to four south-facing terraces, linked by steps with flower beds and seating areas furnished with tables and chairs, One terrace is covered with a pergola, the others are open to the sun. To the west is a secluded walled garden with pear, loquat and orange trees, a lawn and flower beds. It leads onto a large south-facing roof terrace, partially covered by a pergola, with wickerwork chairs and tables.
Outside the property is a quiet lane. Walks begin outside the front door and lead high into the mountains, or gently meander through woods and olive groves.

Coast/Beach
The nearest beach is at Salobreña, about 80 minutes drive away. This is a long, sandy beach, not too built up, with good restaurants at hand. The town is also worth visiting, with its medieval castle and museum. A little further are the towns of Almuñecar and Nerja, both with good beaches and restaurants.

Golf
The nearest golf course is at Salobrena, on the coast - about 80 minutes drive away.

Skiing
The Sierra Nevada ski resort can be reached from Casa Ana as a day trip. It is about 2 hours drive away.

Travel
Airports: the nearest airport is Malaga, than 2.5 hours drive away. Many airlines serve this airport Malaga including Easyjet, Ryanair, Monarch, Flybe, BA and Iberia to name but a few.
Trains: good national and international network. Nearest station, Granada
Buses and taxis are available but we highly recommend car hire as the best way of seeing the area. Available from both airports. Contact Anne the owner for more information.
Car hire: recommended form of transport.

Distances
Nearest cafe just down the lane in Ferreirola. Nearest bars and restaurants: in Mecina (15-20 minutes walk). Pitres, a 10 minute drive, has a bank, supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, swimming pool and bus stop. Excursions: a 15 minute drive takes you to the white villages of the Poqueira valley, ideal for sightseeing and shopping. The Alhambra Palace and city of Granada: 90 minutes drive. Nearest beach: 80 minutes drive (see "Coast" above).

Further details
The Alpujarras is well known for its two dramatic river gorges, the Poqueira and the Trevelez, steep-sided valleys with the peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains high above. Casa Ana is located on the south side of the Trevelez valley, in a sleepy hamlet called Ferreirola, unspoilt and secluded, which boasts some beautiful old houses, a church, a plaza, a café and an orchard in the middle of the village.

The house is an ideal location for walking. The GR142 (Alpujarra footpath) runs through Ferreirola, and the GR7 (which runs from southern Spain to Greece) is about a 30-minute walk from the house. There are many walks straight from the door – ranging from 45-minute strolls to day hikes in the mountains. At Casa Ana you can borrow guide books and maps and the owner, Anne, is a keen hiker herself and knowledgeable about local walking routes.

Other outdoor activities within easy reach of the house include horse riding, mountain biking and mountain climbing.

The nearest village with the amenities you’ll need is Pitres (a 10-minute drive). Here there is a supermarket, baker, butcher, pharmacy and bank and a fruit and vegetable market on Fridays.

Excursions from the house include visits to the white villages of the Poqueira (a 15-minute drive) where you will find craft shops, a museum, and many bars and restaurants.

The Alhambra Palace and historic city of Granada, with its Arab quarter, Moroccan market, cathedral, shops and tapas bars are about 75 minutes drive and make a wonderful day out.

The nearest Mediterranean beaches (Salobreña, Nerja and Almuñecar) are 75 – 90 minutes away and also make an excellent day-long excursion

We had a wonderful week at the Casa Ana. It is such a peaceful spot and you have made a beautiful house for people to stay and appreciate all that the area has to offer.

Thank you for making our stay at Casa Ana such an agreeable one. It really is a writer's and walker's paradise! I already look back on the peace of your lovely village, flowers everywhere, its glorious situation up in the hills, the constant sound of the torrent down in the valley- and birdsong - with nostalgia.

We just want to thank you so much for such a fabulous holiday that we had at Casa Ana. Thank you for your welcome. The view of the mountains entranced us and with the binoculars we enjoyed seeing the ibex, eagles, falcons and other beautiful birds. We loved the sounds of the goat bells, the birds and the river far below. The walks were magnificent and we feel extremely fit now. G&RH, May 2009

About the owner
I'm one of those people who never intended to live in Spain... but the warmth of the sun and the beauty of the mountains won me over. For many years I worked in London as a festival director and music promoter (including launching the career of Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure and others). With the new Millennium I wanted to try something new in my life, so I went to California to grow organic vegetables. I came to Spain for a holiday in 2002 and never left because I stumbled on a semi-ruined house in a tiny village in the Alpujarra mountains and fell in love with it. It took nearly 2 years to renovate the property and now I spend my time caring for the house and garden and cats and looking after my guests. I also offer treatments based on the work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais.

Year purchased: 2004

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Have you ever taken one look at a property and been completely sure that it's the place for you? That's what happened to me when I found Casa Ana. The house clings to a mountain-side on the edge of Ferreirola, one of the prettiest and most unspoilt villages of the Alpujarra. It's surrounded by mountains and the views of the Trevelez river valley are spectacular. It's extremely peaceful (no cars in the village) and the climate is wonderful. It's also a haven for wildlife: there are golden orioles and nightingales in the garden and you can see ibex on the mountainside nearby. The area manages to keep its wildness but it isn't that remote. The roads are good, Granada's only an hour or so away, and Malaga (with the new motorway) just a couple of hours.

Unique benefits of the property
Guests come to Casa Ana to be peaceful, to rest, to walk in the hills, and maybe to write, paint or take photos. In summer when it's hot you can sunbathe on the terrace or read a book under a shady pergola. In late winter the place comes into its own: all the almond blossom is out, the walking is fantastic and the sun is already warm. The location is convenient: you don't have to take dirt roads to get to the house, and it has a reliable supply of electricity and water. Shopping is easy too, with a supermarket, bakery, chemist etc in nearby Pitres. The nearest bars and restaurants are within walking distance, in the next village, Mecina. Guests often hire a car to explore further afield: a day in Granada and the Alhambra Palace or a day at the beach are popular excursions.
