Artist’s house sensitively restored in typical Alpujarran style with beamed ceilings and terracotta tiled floors, combining rustic simplicity with modern convenience and comfort. 3 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. The main living area is on the first floor with a large dining kitchen and separate living room. The balcony overlooks wooded valleys stretching to the Mediterranean. The garden has a lawn, shady summerhouse, a barbecue patio and a fruit orchard including figs, peaches, nectarines, cherries, pomegranates, almonds and olives. Jubar is a tiny, quiet pueblo blanco that still has more mules than cars. It is a great spot for walkers, artists, birdwatchers and lovers of nature. We are pleased to now have 2 superb restaurants in easy walking distance. Also, Laroles, 10 mins drive away, has restaurants and bars, supermarket, pharmacy, bakery, bank and swimming pool. And Ugijar, 20 mins away, is a small town with internet cafes, and wide range of shops and services.

Accessibility
Jubar has steep village streets and although the ground floor is accessible, the living rooms are on the first floor. It is not a suitable house for people who have difficulty with stairs.

Outside
In front of the house there is a lawn and flower beds, shaded by a large mature tree and also a barbecue patio with table, chairs, loungers and sunshade. There is a summerhouse with tables and seating, overlooking the views to the south. The land is fringed by olive and almond and fig trees and fruit from these and from the young fruit orchard are available for guests when in season. Shading the front double doors is magnificent ancient vine which produces fine grapes in late summer. The first floor balcony off the kitchen offers space for outdoor dining, or just relaxing, and is a fine position for birdwatching and bat spotting. All year round there is constant birdsong, but in the Spring you can particularly hear the distinctive calls of nightingales, golden orioles, bee eaters, swifts, blackbirds and many more.

Coast/Beach
Jubar is 55 minutes drive from the beach resort of Almerimar which has golf courses, a large marina, beaches with safe swimming, and good seafood restaurants.

Skiing
Puerta de la Ragua (25 minutes drive) has cross country ski-ing when snow permits during the winter. Equipment can be hired.

Travel
Almeria and Granada airports are 1.5 hours drive away.
Malaga Airport 2.5 hours drive.
Car hire is essential, and available at reasonable rates at all airports.

Distances
Jubar is 10 mins drive to the local village of Laroles which has bars, restaurants, supermarket and bank. There is also a lovely open-air swimming pool open only during July and August. The local market town of Ugijar (20 mins) has supermarkets, restaurants, bars, an internet cafe and all facilities. Jubar is 30 mins from the mountain pass of Puerta de la Ragua, from where you can access Granada (1.5 hours) and the troglodyte town of Guadix (1 hour) with its cathedral, cave houses and museums.

Further details
Situated directly on the GR7 walking route across Andalucia, the village is an ideal base for mountain walking and more serious trekking. Route notes for local walks are provided and the paths are waymarked. The landscape is an artist's dream, and full of opportunities for those interested in flora and fauna - birds or butterflies or wildflowers, not to mention herds of ibex out on the mountainsides.
Jubar is a village lost in time where the local people tend their terraces daily, using mules and donkeys both to plough and to carry produce. Goatherds take their flocks out on the mountain to graze. Most of the buildings date back to Moorish times. You will find your neighbours really friendly, even if you can only manage a little Spanish. If your Spanish is good there are many stories to be heard.
There are small shops in Mairena (1 mile away), but a bread van visits Jubar daily, and fish and vegetable vans come several times a week.

Booking notes
A 25% non-returnable deposit is required to confirm your booking and the balance is due 4 weeks before arrival.

Owner profile

About the owner
We live in York in the UK. We are retired and as we have a large family we spend a lot of time being active grandparents. One of our daughters lives in Spain, and with her husband runs a hotel and restaurant. As often as we can we come out and see them and their two boys.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought this house in 2005 so that we could have a base near our daughter and her family. We used local builders to renovate it, and then spent a year living here to make it into a home and to plant the garden. We love this house and this area for the gentle pace of life, the peace, the weather, and the balm to the soul from being in the mountains with vast views, huge skies and the wild space of the natural park on our doorstep. We now come out to stay several times a year, leaving it free for renting in between. We like the idea of sharing it, and hope that our guests will come to love the Alpujarras and the village of Júbar and Casa el Ruiseñor too.
