Further details
Albunuelas is a traditional whitewashed village that still relies on agriculture. Donkeys with their esparto grass panniers can be seen in the lanes. It has two restaurants and a couple of bars, plus a bank, pharmacy, two supermarkets, butchers and bakers. Thursday is market day in the village square.
There are restaurants in Restabal and Melegis along with various bars, banks, cash points, butchers, bakers, supermarkets, pharmacies and two filling stations (one with an internet room).
Durcal has a Wednesday market and good medical centre.
Almunecar has a Friday market.
Very little English is spoken but the villagers are extremely friendly and very proud of their villages.
The mountainous Alpujarras has become better known because of the trilogy of books by Chris Stewart - 'Driving Over Lemons', etc., although the area featured in an earlier Gerald Brennan novel, 'South of Granada'. Llanjarron has a famous spa. Pampaneira is a craft village with local hand-made rugs, pottery and honey. Bubion and Capileira are popular with walker and mountaineers - Mulhacen (the highest mountain in Spain) is nearby.
Granada is truly amazing and has all the facilities you would expect of a city.
Fishing is well catered for. Lake Beznar has huge carp. Carp, barbel, trout and bass can be found in Elbalse de Quantar and Embalse de Frederico Abellan.
There are water parks at Almunecar and Granada and a renowned diving school at La Herradura.
A section of the GR7 walk, which runs from Tarifa to Istanbul, goes through the Rio Santo Gorge below the house and there are many scenic walks in the area. Guided tapas walks through Granada are available.
Other activities include tennis, hang gliding, hot air ballooning, off road biking, cycling and horse riding.
We have seen eagles flying in the valley below and there have been sightings of kestrels, hoopoe birds and honey buzzards. Binoculars are provided.
The area has Roman, Moorish and Iberian remains.
