Further details
Begur - This charming hillside town with its cobbled streets offers the visitor an excellent choice of Catalan restaurants, tapas bars and shops.
The main square has entertainment in the high season and there are several cellar bars and a couple of discos.
The overall atmosphere is very Spanish with local artists' paintings and crafts displayed in the square during the summer. Every Wednesday there is a market sellling fruit/veg clothes and accessories.
There are excellent supermarkets, specialist fishmonger, butchers' shops and freshly baked bread available in many shops.
The old town of Begur is situated some seven hundred feet above sea level, 3 km inland and enjoys superb views over the coastline. Enjoy a gentle stroll around the cobbled streets of this romantic town which shelters at the foot of a 16th century castle. This fortified town with its preserved walls and five magnificent keeps (16th and 17th century) is built on three hills, with the castle, the town and a residential area on each, all within an outcrop standing in the Mediterranean Sea and providing the perfect area to explore over and over again.
There are strong Catalan and local traditions. History, arts and crafts, mixed with exclusive shops in exceptional surroundings – and all five minutes from a beach. There is much to see and do in this region including a visit to LA BISBAL (about 12 km away) - the pottery capital of Cataluña, or the nearby fortified villages of Pals and Peratallada which are steeped in history and an absolute delight to visit.
Some of the most inviting towns are southeast of Girona. Calella de Palafrugell embodies the appeal of the region. The main activity here is simply soaking in the beauty of the forested cliffs hugging the beach and the rock formations jutting into the azure Mediterranean. This can be done quite nicely while sunning on the sand or sitting in a seaside cafe. Or for those feeling more active, a 30-minute-long, cliff-top walk beside the sea

Owner profile
Padstow Harbour, Cornwall
About the owner
I have been involved with property for as long as I can remember and when we first visited Begur we thought it a wonderful region and decided to buy a holiday home, Casa Alfora.
We rented it out through a local agent the first year (2001). After that I decided to rent it out myself and since then we have built two more houses and purchased another in Begur all of which are on this site. Gradually I built up a business and we now have our own website featuring property in Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal.
Poros Island, Greece is another favourite destination of ours where we have a house overlooking the harbour and on the mainland, both with amazing views and both of which are featured on this website.
Owners Direct has been a very good vehicle for us to market our holiday homes.
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought Casa Romero in I can't quite remember now; possibly 2004.
From the moment I saw the photo of this gingerbread house in the estate agent's portfolio I knew this was to be the next purchase in Begur.
I was not disappointed when I went to see the house. The gardens are mature and the house characterful. The owner had built it and had put much thought into every aspect.
We have spent many happy times in Casa Romero and love the privacy of the garden and the ease of the house.
I sometimes walk to the nearest supermarket which is a pleasant tramp through the woods and this takes 18 mins. Another 5-10 mins and you are in Begur.
The location is very peaceful with open countryside to one side of the house which is the last house in a cul de sac.
Unique benefits of the property
We enjoy the house being on one level with lovely views to the garden from all rooms. The upper level terrace has sea views and there is also another terrace near the built in bbq with views of the Castle of Begur, so many different aspects to enjoy.
In 2008 we had Casa Romero fully refurbished with lighter coloured tiles, new bathroom and we opened out the kitchen and refurbished the existing units, installing a dishwasher.
We also had aircon units installed in each room and a ceiling fan in the sitting room. There is a wood burning stove for winter evenings! It is an easy house to run and we love staying here. The character of the house is very appealing with the stone facades and pretty gardens surrounding the house.
