The local beach, El Playazo is considered one of the most beautiful in the park and no visit is complete without a trip to Playa de Los muertos, Monsul and Genoveses.
Special interest holidays
Granada and its Alhambra are an easy day trip by car or train. We can arrange a full day visit or an overnight if required. There is wonderful hiking locally and we can provide full documentation and maps with great hints and tips for when and where. There are six diving schools within 10 minutes drive and one within 100m of the house. We can arrange single dives as a try out or longer courses. Cabo de Gata and the surrounding area have long been used as a backdrop for films, especially westerns. From Lawrence of Arabia to a Fistful of Dollars, guided tours of films locations can be arranged.
Travel
The nearest airport is Almeria and has regular flights with easyjet and other budget airlines. The airport is a easy 45 minute drive from Rodalquilar. With the opening of the new Motorway from Cartagena to Vera, San Javier (murcia) airport is just 2 hours drive, with all but the last 15km on excellent toll motorway. A car is strongly recommended to fully appreciate the area.
Further details
Rodalquilar is one of the quieter areas in the park. It is a very small village with a year round population of less than 100. In the summer months this number swells considerably but the tourism is very restrained and select. There are five restaurants in the village, all worth a visit but a couple very good menus and wine lists. Several bars add to the available options in walking distance. The village boasts the main centre for the national park and offers a wide range of activities throughout the year. From open air cinema in the summer to regular organised hikes year round.
The Goldmine of Rodalquilar perches on the mountain above village and is worth a visit. The land below the Goldmine has been converted into a Botanical Gardens covering over 9Ha (22 acres). The gardens are open daily and reproduce the diversity habitats that can be found in the park. The combination of plant life and water is big attraction for the local bird and animal life. There are several drivable country tracks that take you up behind the gold mine from village to some interesting locations, such as the El Cortijo de Los Frailes (5km) - the hamlet that was the setting for real events gave rise to Garcia Loca's play 'Blood Wedding' (Bodas de Sangre). Carry on for another 10km and you arrive at the tiny village of Los Albaricoques - host to the famous duel scene in For a Few Dollars More.
Rodalquilar sits in the dip of an ancient volcanic caldera. Though long extinct, this area was originally the most volcanic in Spain and the stunning formations and geology are unique. Several marked trails originate in the village and climbing the mountains that surround the village can give stunning views from the snow capped Sierra Nevada to the Moroccan Atlas mountains.
