Villajoyosa is a typically Spanish seaside town, which has retained its original character and charm. It is located on the Costa Blanca between the historic city of Alicante and the lively commercialised town of Benidorm. It boasts one of the loveliest and best kept beaches in Spain and some of the finest and cheapest seafood served on a splendid promenade.
It is one of the most effortlessly atmospheric little seaside towns you could wish to visit, it is the sort of place that revels in its relative obscurity, the kind of place Spaniards keep quiet about so that they have somewhere civilised to go on holiday themselves. It was featured on the BBC series, Eastenders in August 2000. The town is a much older town than Benidorm and the locals say that it is close enough to Benidorm whilst being far enough away! It is only 10km to Benidorm and the route is filled with olive, carob and almond trees, as well as a number of palms, pines and prickly pears.

Villajoyosa is famous for its fiestas and fireworks. These usually take place through the year and if your visit concides with one, you are sure to enjoy it.

Further details
Alphons XIII granted city status to Villajoyosa in 1911.
As well as tourism, Villajoyosa is the home of fishermen and chocolatemakers, a strange combination but both of which are deeply rooted in the city's history.
The original and older part of town has been declared an historic monument.
There are still various bridges remaining from the time of the Romans.
The crumbling multi-coloured houses of the old quarter, which lean together like a drunken film set, have been recognised as the architectural treasure they really are. The gnarled old town of Villajoyosa is an experience well worth a visit on its own, but the big deal here is the beach. Its a beautiful beach (Blue Flag), of golden sands and clear waters, fringed by a
balustraded promenade lined with a series of restaurants and bars whose tables fan out to provide a perfect place to unpeel some garlicky prawns and drink cold beers.

Owner profile

Nagpal and Wendy 26th July 2008.

About the owner
Nagpal Sherman and Wendy Lidster. We live in Hove, East Sussex, England. We are grandparents, between the two of us we have five children and ten grandchildren. We enjoy having them all around from time to time, they all get on well with each and it is always fun having them visit us. For my wife combined big family is not enough so we also, have three cats and one Yorkshire terrier. We are very lucky that we have a circle of good friends and somebody is visiting or calling almost everyday, so, no chance of us ever retiring from hustle and bustle of life?

Year purchased: 2006

Why the owner chose a home in this location
In May 2006 we were invited for the 40th birthday party of one of our sons in Barcelona. On the way to Barcelona, we stopped at Villajoyosa, where Wendy have several friends. We stayed at the house of one of those friend and that was the beginning of our romance with Villajoyosa. In July 2006 we bought our holiday home in Villajojosa. Villajoyosa enjoys the climate of Costa Blanca and the area where the house is situated is very typical of Spanish living with narrow streets and is steeped in ancient Spanish history, yet it is only 15 minutes from Benidorm and 35 minutes from Alicante Airport, with lovely views of mountains on one side and a blue flag beech only three minutes walk from the house. We simply adore our house and the area.

Unique benefits of the property
The house is situated near the town centre and it is easy walking distance from the shopping area, the food supermarkets, the Thursday open air market which sells everything from the best of fresh fruit and vegetables, cloths jewellery, footwear, almost everything and visit to this market is must if you are there on Thursday. Within easy walking distance from the house, along the beech. there is a lovely marina with a bar and a very good restaurant. To top it all the house overlooks the sea and a beautiful newly build historic park, which commemorates the Victory of Christian over the Moors. The Spaniards are very proud of this park and really look after it. You can enjoy the evening with a long cold drink on the spacious sun terrace of the house.
