Notes on accommodation
The views are simply stunning from the villa as we are perched half way up the mountain, with views across wild countryside down the valley to the orange groves. Because of its superb position, the villa has steps up to it, so care is necessary with small children, and for elderly people who may have difficulty going upstairs. Not suitable for wheelchairs. The Studio has a separate access to the main villa which allows for privacy if two families are sharing the facilities. I love it because you feel away from everyone in there and the huge kingsize bed is so comfy! We have room fans because we don't like air conditioning ourselves but with its lofty position, you always have a cooling breeze at some time of the day.
The garden at the back is private and we have our own olive and lemon trees. Take a chair and chill out!
No smoking in the villa please as the smell lingers after you have left and not everyone appreciates that. Well behaved dog welcome.

Accessibility
As stated before, we have a number of steps leading up to the villa so wheelchair users could not be accommodated at all. Families with small children need to take care with the steps but once at the villa, the sun terrace, pool and dining area is self contained so it is secure and your children cannot wander off.

Outside
Private swimming pool, 8x4m, and in summer the temperature is usually around 26-28C, with sun terrace, outdoor dining area (covered). Gardens to all sides of villa, including private lawned area with our own olive and lemon trees. 4 sun loungers, table and chairs, drying rack, barbecue, outdoor kitchen area. The views from the villa are superb, looking up the mountains and across the valley, and then down towards the beach and the sea. The beauty of this place is that you can have peace and quiet on the mountain and then drive down and enjoy the hustle and bustle of fashionable Denia or Oliva.
There is so much to explore along the coast, with new shops and restaurants springing up all the time. I've just returned (March 2012) and didn't recognise some places.

Coast/Beach
Monte Pego is a ten minute car journey from Denia, a delightful cosmospolitan town by the sea. With over 50 kms of sandy beaches and rocky coves it makes Monte Pego an ideal place for your holidays. The beach extends all the way to Oliva and beyond so you can choose a different area each day of your holiday.

Golf
Denia is blessed with two of the best golf courses in the North Costa Blanca. La Sella is approx 15 minutes away with an 18 hole course designed by Jose Maria Olazabal. There are weekly tennis courses, a tennis club and an Equestian centre. Just 10 minutes from Monte Pego, there is the prestigious Club de Golf Oliva Nova, designed by Seve Ballesteros and boasting an 18 and a 9 hole golf course.
There are also two 9 hole courses at Javea and Don Cayo within a 30 minute drive. Nearer to Alicante, there are 4 good courses, El Plantio, Alicante Golf, Bonalba and Alenda, all within a 75 minute drive from the villa.
Between Denia and Valencia there are El Saler (host of the 2001 Spanish Open) and El Bosque (designed by Robert Trent Jones and host of many Championships). There is also the Escorpion, Manises, Panoramica and Mediterraneo (home to Sergio Garcia).
Just a tip from golfers who have stayed with us - bring an umbrella to protect yourselves from the sun whilst teeing off.

Skiing
Having not visited the ski areas in Spain, we don't feel able to recommend anything, but we have been told that it would take about one hour to get to some of the best ski areas in Spain! So why don't you try it out and let us know.

Special interest holidays
Walking: There are some lovely walks in the area, particularly if you head for the mountains. Bird Watching: Wonderful areas around to wander through and bird watch. We are so high that its a real pleasure to watch the swallows and house martins swopping below you. Riding: There are 2 good riding stables nearby. Water sports: Plenty! Kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing, glass bottom boats, you name it, they have it. My son and his lady went on a catamaran trip and said it was wonderful.
Cars, quads and 4 x 4 excursions: all organised in Denia.
Wildlife: There are deer, wild boar (in the mountains) and wild goats too but we haven't seen them yet.
Property prospectors: use our villa as your base to get the feel of the area. Free advice gladly given! Good rates available, particularly out of season.

Travel
Nearest airports are Alicante (85 kms, approx 1 hour) or Valencia (90kms, approx 75 minutes). The motorway extends all along the Costa Blanca and runs through to Northern Europe. Monte Pego to Calais is a mere 19 hour drive! A car is essential at the villa.

Distances
Pego town 5kms, Vergel 5kms, Denia 10kms, Oliva 7kms, Gandia 17kms. Make a trip up into the mountains and find the real Spain! Benidorm is a mere 40 minute drive down the motorway with theme and water parks, night clubs and casinos! For those of you who love good food, Denia is full of wonderful restaurants, cafes and tapas bars.

Further details
Monte Pego has its own restaurant, tennis courts, bank and bars on the mountain and Buenavista Club also boasts two swimming pools, tennis courts, gym, restaurant and bar. La Cova bar is good for snacks and there is live music on Saturday night. Little French bakery man outside Tues, Thurs, Sat & Sun from 0800-1200. 10 minutes by car are the towns of Pego, Denia, Oliva and Javea where bars, restaurants and nightlife are numerous. Special Offer for families only: please contact us if you want to use the villa during the 'high season' of July and August. We are quite prepared to offer you a discount. This villa has been furnished to a high standard as not only do we use it ourselves, but we have our own friends to stay here too. It might not be the cheapest villa you look at, but its certainly one of the best for value, comfort and luxury living! We are negotiable if there's only 2 of you, or a small family unit. Give us a call!
We are now looking for someone to take the villa for a long winter let - from November to end April. If you're interested, give us a call and we will negotiate a reasonable rental charge. The winter ski resorts of Valdelinares and Javalambre are just over 2 hours drive North of Monte Pego. Lots of lovely little markets abound and there is a local Rastro (abit like a car boot) at Verger some weekends. LOTS of stands and quite interesting, fruit, veg, bits and bobs, clothes, watches, jewellery, etc. Portal de La Marina - Ondara. Brand new shopping complex with huge Zara store, supermarket, boutiques, bars and food outlets. Gandia also has some amazing shopping centres with free parking and there is also a large Carrefour complex there too. Since we bought the villa a lot of Chinese Bazaars have opened (basically food free supermarkets) but amazing value for all sorts of bits and bobs.

Booking notes
For bookings please contact Mike or Judy Popley. Refundable Damage deposit of £200. Booking deposit 50%, balance to be paid 6 weeks prior to holiday. We offer good rates for short term stays, particularly in the winter/spring periods.

Owner profile

About the owner
We bought the villa several years ago when our sons were both still at school. Mike works in television and I now run my own business, organising and staging specialist plant fairs in the North of England where we live. The boys still use the villa too - but one is currently in Canada and the other one has just returned from Australia. The villa is in a lovely area - very spanish and cosmopolitan. The Spanish come to Denia for their holidays and the shops and restaurants reflect this.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We chose this area because you have the best of both worlds - the hustle and bustle of Denia, Oliva and Pego just down the road, but the peace and tranquility of the mountains where the villa is. The views from the terrace are just fantastic and I never tire of sitting out there, book and wine at my side, just watching the world go by. The swallows love the valley below so are constantly floating past us! On a still morning or evening you might well hear the lions roaring down at the Safari Park on the coast. With being up in the hills, you always get a pleasant little breeze in the afternoon which is more than welcome. The pool is lovely too (though not in November when we did brave it once) and children love it. Evening barbecues overlooking the sea? Paradise!

Unique benefits of the property
With all villas around Denia, you need a car. Access along the coast is good, particularly with the new by-pass, and you're so near to Alicante and Valencia (both well worth a visit) and for those of you with older children, Terra Mitica and Benidorm have some fantastic theme and water parks. The beaches are endless - just take any little side road towards the coast and you find yet more and more quaint little areas with cafes, bars, etc all along the coast. Shopping in Denia is brilliant - some fantastic clothes, shoes and jewellery shops intermingled with restaurants, cafes, tapas bars, etc. You can also catch the ferry across to Ibiza or Majorca from the quayside .... and also buy freshly caught fish there each morning. Delicious. With two levels in the villa, its great for famili
