This superbly appointed air-conditioned townhouse (built 1975) enjoys one of the very best locations within the idyllic Cortijo Grande valley, near the 9th fairway of the 9-hole golf course (3 other 18-hole courses are within 20 mins drive). Cortijo Grande was a traditional Spanish village with orange groves and when the golf course was developed in the 1970's, the original buildings were retained and now form the clubhouse and bar/restaurant (3 min stroll away). The newer buildings from the 1970's match the old ones and our house has been refitted in the traditional Rustica style. The French doors open onto a private terrace with views of the orange groves & cypress trees on the golf course, the Sierra Cabrera mountains, the hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo and the Med. Enjoy the time-warp experience of being in this amazing protected valley where nothing at all has been built for more than 20 years. The house has every mod con, from a king-size bed to satellite TV & wi-fi broadband.

Notes on accommodation
There are reverse air-conditioning units in each room, providing chilled air during hot summers and warm air in winter. Sorry, no pets allowed. Smoking only allowed outside on the terrace please. The rear terrace (accessed from the French doors at the lounge) has unrestricted access onto the golf course, so any small children would have to be supervised here and on the upper balconies. For younger children, we can arrange quotes for hire of cot, stairgate, high chair and pushchair upon request. We provide an information pack with recommended days out plus best-value restaurants and tapas bars, and leaflets on attractions in the area. A complimentary welcome pack is included, including basics such as coffee, tea, sugar, milk and bread. We also include beer and a bottle of cava to get your holiday started, plus specialities from Almeria which may include Manchego cheese, local olive oil, chorizo sausage, alioli, plus home-made marmalade, jam and chutney made from local produce.

Accessibility
The property is unsuitable for wheelchair users. The bathroom is on the upper floor and is accessed by a new 'Rustica' style staircase and handrail, which gives much easier access to the upper floor than the original steel spiral staircase still found in some of the townhouses.

Outside
Sizable private terrace overlooking the 9th fairway of the 9-hole golf course with patio table & umbrella and 4 reclining garden chairs, plus 2 sun loungers, all with padded covers. Brick barbecue ideal for single-use packs. There are bougainvillea bushes either side of the terrace, plus some oleander hedging, all of which we keep neatly trimmed all year round. There is a rockery with steps leading down to the cactus and aloe vera plants next to the rough at the edge of the fairway. The terrace was newly-tiled in November 2010 and has breathtaking views of the golf course, orange groves, the Sierra Cabrera mountains and the Mediterranean sea can be seen from the edge of the terrace nearest the golf course. We bought the view and the house came with it!
There is also a small front terrace, also newly tiled in November 2010, where our guests can sit to catch the early-evening sun.

Coast/Beach
The lovely unspoilt beaches of Mojacar and Garrucha are within 12 minutes driving time. There is a marina at Garrucha. The village of Villaricos is less than 10 minutes further on - it has a lovely beach and picturesque coastal road towards Aguilas. To the south, the beaches at Cabo de Gato national park are 30 minutes away, with superb views from the excellent high coastal road from Mojacar to Carboneras.

Golf
The setting and the views of the golf course are simply awesome, and need to be experienced rather than read about in print. The orange groves are watered from an underground volcanic lake, and the valley is a veritable paradise even for non-golfers. The 18-hole golf courses of Marina Golf Mojacar, Macenas and Valle De Este are all within 20 minutes' drive, and the international Desert Springs resort is 30 minutes' drive, but these are modern courses in settings not on a "par" with the natural valley of Cortijo Grande.

We can arrange hire of bags of golf clubs for our guests - 30 euros no matter the length of your holiday, includes 20 golf balls. Only 50c chargeback per ball for any lost balls. Choice of sets of clubs includes steel, graphite, and even left-handed. Deposit required. Our guests will find this provides great savings over taking golf clubs on the plane.

We will also be glad to help with discounts at the golf courses upon advance request.

Skiing
Skiing is available in season at the Sierra Nevada mountains in Granada province, but it's around a 2-hour drive.

Special interest holidays
For nature lovers, leave the car at the townhouse, there are plenty of easy walks, including the remains of an ancient mosque and even the old airfield and control tower featured in an Indiana Jones film. The valley is a bird-watcher's paradise - we have seen storks on the golf course, a kingfisher,bee-eaters and wagtails. The Moorish village of Cabrera, just up the hill from Cortijo Grande, has riding stables plus an Italian restaurant and a Moroccan restaurant.
Also available within 15 minutes drive, surfing, sailing, tennis, water skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving, cycling, fishing and mountain biking.

Travel
Almeria airport is within 45 minutes motorway drive. Murcia airport is less than 90 minutes' drive on the AP-7 toll motorway. There are plenty of flights into Alicante airport which takes us 1 hour 50 minutes using the main A-7 motorway. Drivers will relish the quiet roads around here - not even a traffic light within miles! Access to the townhouse is easy - the stone-arched entrance to Cortijo Grande is less than 3km from junction 520 of the N-340 motorway. Full directions are provided.

Distances
The townhouse is a six-minute drive from the town of Turre which has lots of shops, bars, restaurants, banks, supermarket, chemist, post office and a market on Fridays. The delightful hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo is another 5 minutes away and leads down to the playa. Almeria city is less than an hour away, and well worth a day trip for its enormous fortress (free admission), Cathedral and harbour side. Granada and the Alhambra Palace can be reached in just over 2 hours.

Further details
The new 'Los Pinos' restaurant is just over a minute's walk from the house, and their 3-course menu del dia is available day and night for only 12 euros which includes a drink. The cosy and atmospheric 'Almazara' bar/restaurant is in a 300-year old building a 3-minute stroll away. Please note that 'Los Limoneros' bar/restaurant and pool on Cortijo Grande was closed and up for sale in January 2011.

There are other bar/restaurants in the valley and up at Cabrera, including the stunning 'Riad Cabrera' Moroccan restaurant and Los Pastores bar/restaurant in a beautiful courtyard setting.

The bustling town of Turre is a 5-minute drive away, where you will find supermarkets, banks and lots of restaurants and bars - a lunch for two of 4 tapas and 2 beers costs around 5 euros, and there are Spanish and British restaurants and cafes, plus two excellent Indian restaurants and a great-value Chinese restaurant. There is a marina and excellent go-karting at nearby Garrucha, a water park and indoor heated pool at Vera. The large and quirky beach resort of Mojacar Playa is less than 15 minutes drive. The ancient Moorish hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo (seen in the distance from the townhouse) is a must, with its narrow streets, arches and alleyways, great shops, jazz and classical music venues, cultural centre and restaurants. There are other white hilltop villages to visit, including nearby Bedar, and Nijar for ceramics and rugs.

Cabo de Gato national park is a fantastic day out, with its idyllic fishing villages. The Mini Hollywood theme park and zoo, where all the famous spaghetti westerns were made, is about 45 minutes away. In this part of Spain, there are many fiestas during the summer. Where the sun shines over 300 days a year and Christmas lunch is usually an outdoor event.

Guest comments
Hi Jim, many thanks for the use of the wonderful accommodation, very comfortable (and warm). We very much hope to be able to use the townhouse in the future, in particular the patio area. A fantastic view! Regards DW.

This place is paradise. We've never found a better view anywhere. See you next year ! J.M.

This place is the real deal. We walked for miles around the valley and up to Cabrera, saw kingfishers, wagtails and bee-eaters. We spent a lot of time chilling out around the pool at Los Limoneros, nice place! After quite a few indifferent holidays in noisy apartments, this was so peaceful that we sometimes missed quite a lot of the day sleeping. S.S.

Owner profile

About the owner
My wife and I live in this Levante area of Almeria province in Andalucia. We moved here in 2006. After looking in several countries to buy a place in the sun, doing cruises and viewing trips, everywhere we fancied was either over-developed, or becoming over-developed. After visiting friends here in 2005, we finally found what we were looking for - an area of outstanding natural beauty, low-rise building, welcoming people, low-density population - and quiet roads! Before each rental, we prepare our house to the most meticulous standards for our guests, using our own 74 point checklist. We even de-crumb the toaster and clean out the kettle! Although we get a lot of return visitors, we love helping new guests discover the delights of the valley and the wonderfully scenic Levante area.

Year purchased: 2006

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought our townhouse as a holiday home to spend our winters and rent out in summer. We hadn't planned to buy a townhouse in Cortijo Grande, but after viewing other property in the area, we went out for a drive one day and stumbled onto what was like a scene from "The Sound of Music", except this was January and folk were sunbathing on their terraces and balconies. In 2007, we decided that we wanted to live in this wonderful unspoilt area full time, but we needed a bigger house, so we now live in nearby Bedar village and rent our townhouse all year round. Apart from the views, we love the fact that the valley is tucked away from the holiday crowds, yet only 15 minutes from the coast. The main Mediterranean motorway is less than 10 minutes away, so getting around is easy.

Unique benefits of the property
Although this is a golf valley, don't expect a sterile air to the place. It's a 9-hole golf course, with the clubhouse and bar in a rustic 300 year old building and there are 3 bar/restaurants and a swimming pool well within easy walking distance. It's a protected valley, nothing has been built here for nearly 20 years. We get a real kick out of taking new visitors onto the terrace and hearing them say "Wow!" when they see the views. Many of our renters have been keen walkers and birdwatchers. We get a lot of winter lets, as Almeria has the mildest and driest climate in Europe and we rent to a lot more arthritis sufferers than golfers! We're delighted that all our guests have loved how we've developed our house and they have all looked after it really well during their visits.
