Less than 3km from the market town of Origiva, nestling in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, this is a quiet and peaceful retreat. The 10x5m private pool continues the Moorish style and is set among the orange, lemon, olive, palm and jacaranda trees. Relaxing by the pool, amongst the olive groves with the superb mountain vistas, you will occasionally hear the sound of goats' bells in the distance or see horses trotting past. Nearby the white washed Berber villages, can be found clinging to the southern slopes of Spain's highest mountain range. These were the last outposts of the Moors after the fall of the of Granada in the 16th century.

Guest comments
We were determined to have a relaxing holiday, but never dreamt it would be made so easy for us! This beautiful place you've both created is just perfect for winding down. You take a deep breath from the moment you arrive. Nothing is too much trouble and you've been able to strike the balance between friendliness and privacy. Beautfiul area, Granada and the Alhambra we loved! Thank you very much - Carolyn, John, Adam and Freya, Yorkshire.
Top 10 at Cortijo el Castano (not necessarily in order)! Stunning mountain views from the terrace, reading and swimming in the garden, cafe Baraka in Orgiva for Moroccan pastries, lunch in the square in Pampaneira, rotisserie chickens from Orgiva Market, BBQ with Nigel and Zoe - great hosts, the Alhambra, watching the BBC! Candlelit dinners on terrace, very comfortable, well equipped and Moroccan style surroundings - all beautifully designed and in keeping. Thank you - The Woolf family - Sussex.
Owner profile
Nigel and Zoe at home in Spain
About the owner
Nigel and Zoe met in 1997 and after 2 years together they considered buying a yacht and sailing around the world. With their children grown up and grandchildren imminent, they decided they would prefer to stay close to the UK where all their friends and family live. They opted for 'A Place in the Sun' which is only just over 2 hours flight from the UK. They love it here and have found the slow pace of life exactly to their liking. They are both sporty, playing tennis, yoga, swimming and plan to take up golf. They also ski during the winter months and enjoy walking in the mountains. Taking part in some of the classes available locally such as learning Spanish or painting, time passes gently but ultimately reading a book or newspaper under an olive tree and blue skies they find is bliss!
Year purchased: 2003
Why the owner chose a guest house in this location
After a five week tour of Spain and the Mediterranean coast, looking for the ideal location to live, they chose the quiet, dramatic and tranquil location of Tijola in the lower Alpujarras. This beautiful, mountainous region, is only a short drive away from the coast, the ski resort of the Sierra Nevada and the stunning city of Granada. They then set about looking for a property to buy. After much searching, it soon became apparent that every property they viewed needed a huge amount of work to bring them up to modern day standards. With this in mind they chose a particularly run down property with a ruin attached, which was in need of complete renovation.
They engaged a local architect to design and ... read more about them and their project on their website.
Unique benefits of the property
Their property is two and a half kilometres from the market town of Orgiva so has both the convenience of the town but the tranquility of the countryside. It is a nice walk into town for those who don't want to drive. They have designed the property so that it feels like it has been here since the days of the Moors, but with all the comforts of this century! They have installed central heating (for those few early mornings in winter where it is necessary), along with a wood burning stove in the villa and air-conditioning, ceiling fans, dishwashers, washing machines, etc.
They have installed a boules pitch in and table tennis. A couple of gym machines in the garage for anyone wanting to get/keep fit.
Everyone who has stayed in Cortijo el Castano has been delighted.
