|
This has been our family holiday home for over 20 years. It consists of a traditional, beamed farmhouse and a separate studio house, linked by a beautiful walled garden with pool. Both buildings have an attractive mix of antique and contemporary furniture and art. There are extensive covered and open terraces, wonderful views of the sea, secluded patios, mature trees and 4 refreshing fountains. It is set in its own 5 acres of terraced planatation of olive, almond and fruit trees. 5km drive into the hills from the seaside village La Herradura (lively restaurants and tapas bars and a host of local activities on offer: water sports, horse riding, tennis, scuba diving, paragliding etc). This property will appeal to people who like to venture off the beaten track. The access road from the coast is steep with sharp corners and no safety barriers. The inconvenience is reflected in modest rental, and provides protection for these beautiful hills. Visit our website for further details.

Notes on accommodation
This has been our family holiday home for over 20 years and you will find toys in the toy chest, and plenty of books CDs and DVDs on the shelves. In addition to wood burners there are gas and electric heaters. But this is a mild, sub-tropical micro climate.
Accessibility
Farmhouse and lower studio same level as car access. Farmhouse has two steps between entrance patio and living room. Lower studio (which can be self contained) has no steps and is wheelchair friendly. Upper studio is reached by either a half flight of steps down from drive or a full flight up up from lower studio. Please note that this property is 'off the beaten track'. The access road from the coast is steep with sharp corners and no safety barriers and requires a driver with steady nerves.
Outside
This area benefits from a subtropical micro climate and with sunshine on average 325 days a year, so the 11 meter long pool is open throughout the year. It is private and it has a solar cover to prolong the swimming season. It does not have a shallow end but a paddling pool is provided. The buildings and walled garden with pool are surrounded by our own 5 acre plantation of olive, almond, avocado and fruit trees. This is a secluded and peaceful place. There are extensive terraces, with tables and chairs in different areas. There is a mobile barbeque but it is not available during the summer because of the high fire risk.
Coast/Beach
The house is 5 kilometers from the seaside village, La Herradura which is built beside a 2km long horse shoe shaped bay, safe and suitable for children, but not sandy. There are restaurants, beach bars, a daily market and an abundance of activities eg skuba diving, para gliding, windsurfing, waterski, sailing and more. There are good beaches all along the coast. To the west a protected natural park with secluded beaches (one naturist). Almunecar has lively beaches waterpark and slides.
Golf
Not the property of choice for a golf addict, but there are 3 golf courses less than an hour's drive away: Moriscos/Motril, Baviera/Torre del Mar and Anorretta.
Travel
Car hire is essential. Malaga airport is just over an hour and Granada 1 hour 30 mins. Both have international airports and also railway stations. Crossing by ferry from UK to Bilbao (P&O ferries) or Sandander (Brittany Ferries) and driving south can be done in about 10 hours, but is a wonderful way to explore Spain if you can allow more time.
Distances
House is approx. 5km north of La Herradura, 7km north west of the market town Almunecar. Marina del Este, the yatching marina is between the two. We are 20km east of Nerja, and 74km east of Malaga (with its Picasso Museum). Granada (and the Alhambra) is approx. 1 hr 30 mins. Seville and Cordoba are a long day's outing or a delightful one night stay away. The Alpujarras, which are the foothills of the Sierra Nevada are about 1 hr 20 mins.
Further details
See our website for more about the area. There are 2 housebooks with information about local restaurants, activities, and more. Also walking maps for the Alpujarras and guide and history books to the area. La Herradura has lots of lively restaurants and tapas bars, and there are plenty of activities on offer eg tennis, horse riding, sailing, windsurfing, paragliding, jetskiing, mountain biking, mountaineering. Sol y Nieve, the skiing resort in the Sierra Nevada is about 1 hr 40 mins, has over 75 kilometers of spectacular runs for all skiing levels. Our sub-tropical climate makes this a very attractive place to stay throughout the year. In summer the water on this coast is very clear with a visibility of up to 25m. It claims to have the highest concentration of fish in Spain and there is an active scuba diving school, Centro de Buceo, in La Herradura.
