Skiing
Whilst Spain may not conjure up an image of impressive snow covered mountain peaks the ski slopes of the Sol y Nieve resort in the Sierra Nevada are just a 1hr 40 minute drive from Orgiva. It has practically guaranteed sunshine and some of the best snow conditions in Europe. As one of Europe's highest resorts it has a surprisingly long season by traditionally opening in November and running to the first week in May. The Alpine skiing championships took place here in 1994. Whilst staying at Mimosa it is possible to get to the ski slopes in the morning and return to sunbathe by the pool in the late afternoon. Another alternative is to stay overnight at one of the reasonably priced hostels in the ski resort.

Further details
Orgiva is a small market town with an abundance of tapas bars, a pizzeria, restaurants and wonderfully friendly people. There are many pavement cafes which give the town a cosmopolitan feeling. There is a lively weekly market where people gather from miles around to buy and sell produce, everyday essentials and works of art and crafts. The small supermarkets, chemists, banks and health food shops cater for most of your needs. There is also an internet cafe. A larger choice of merchandise is available in Granada and the nearby coastal resort of Motril. This is one of the few remaining areas of Spain where free tapas are served with drinks (Why order a meal when you get a free snack with every glass of wine?). There is a tiny cinema which is open on Friday and Saturday evenings and occasionally shows films in the original UK or American version and a small outdoor disco at weekends in the high season where people of all ages are welcomed. For younger children there is a play area with swings and slide etc. near to the covered Mercado.

In the centre of Orgiva there is a 16th century parish church with a mixture of Baroque and Renaissance influences and a beautiful interior. The Palace of the Counts of Sastago in the centre of the town has been tastefully restored and houses the ayunmiento. Orgiva is a good centre from which to explore this interesting region on foot, by car or local bus. You can wander along footpaths that are centuries old and be constantly amazed at the breathtaking scenery and vibrant colours of oleander, wisteria and bourganvillea. Horse riding, mountain biking and hill walking can be arranged locally. You may however prefer to relax by the pool surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. The real charm of this area is the glimpse of Spain as it was before large scale tourism and that, combined with breathtaking scenery and a wonderful climate, makes for a memorable holiday.
