Cortijo la Mata is a traditional Andalusian farmhouse, built in the year 1911. Situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, yet only 10 minutes by car from the Alhambra Palace and the city of Granada, the house is located just outside the old village of Monachil in an area of outstanding natural beauty surrounded by olive, almond and cherry trees. For those who are looking for a complete escape to the Andalusian countryside yet want to take advantage of all that the city of Granada has to offer plus take in the ski slopes of Spain's highest mountain range the location is ideal.

The villa is set in a fenced and gated plot of approximately 1500m2 and includes three fully furnished large patios with barbecues, well maintained private swimming pool with sun loungers, gardens and private mountainside with paths leading up to the surrounding countryside. Enclosed parking for up to 4 cars.

The whole property has spectacular views across the Monachil valley.

Coast/Beach
Granada has always been known in Spain for the possibility of skiing in the morning and sunbathing in the afternoon and since the stunning new highway connecting Granada and Motril opened in 2009 this has taken on a whole new meaning. With the ski resort a 30 minute drive from the village and beach resorts such as Salobreña and Playa Granada only 45 minutes, this really is an option on a sunny January day.

Skiing
Sierra Nevada ski station 25 minutes from the property via Monachil's own access road. No need to go back to Granada city.

Special interest holidays
Monachil has a wealth of outdoor activities on offer, from mountain biking, rock climbing and hang gliding to flamenco lessons and donkey rides (not the beach variety!) almost anything can be organized. The city of Granada is only 10 or 15 minutes away and visits to the Alhambra, Albayzin and flamenco caves of Sacromonte are a must.

Travel
Granada airport is a 20 minutes drive and Malaga airport 90 minutes. Car hire is recommended for those who wish to explore further afield. However, the cortijo is within 10 minutes easy walking distance from the village and then only a short bus journey from Granada.

Sierra Nevada ski resort - 30 minutes
Salobreña beach - 45 minutes

All the above distances are calculated on a clear day in normal traffic conditions. Driving times in bad weather or during rush hour will of course take longer.

Further details
The village has several small and interesting shops and restaurants and of course Granada has an endless list of places to visit. The villa contains a guidebook with information and recomendations on all local shops, restaurants and supermarkets.

About the owner
I initially moved to Spain in September of 1996 with the intention of immersing myself in the language and culture. After spending a year studying and managing to get my Spanish up to a reasonable level I was offered a job with a small multinational IT company and consequently moved to Barcelona, where I lived for the next five years. I then returned to Granada where I currently live with my wife Sari and our two small boys Nico and Kian.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Prime location. Only minutes by car from the Alhambra - THE biggest tourist attraction in the whole of Spain, 30 minutes from Sierra Nevada ski resort and 45 minutes from the Granada province beach resorts (via the brand new A-44 highway) the property is located in the beautiful Monachil river valley, minutes on foot from the village itself. On top of the above the property offers modern facilities whilst maintaining all the rustic charm that an Andalucian farmhouse built almost 100 years ago offers. For all the above reasons this property rents all year round and advance booking is highly recommended.
