The Weaver's cottage

An ancient watermill and 2 dwellings, fully restored to a high specification in 2009, in the rolling hills of Galicia on the Arnego river with gardens and mile after mile of countryside. Lying at the end of its own track a few km from a country road, it is south facing and sits in a secluded wooded valley visited only by the occasional fisherman. Outside there is a covered barbeque area and a vine shaded terrace, ideal for dining during the day. For sun-bathing there is a large wooden deck with a wonderful view of the river which later becomes the perfect place for an evening drink to catch the last rays of the setting sun. The old mill remains unaltered with its original stones. Easy drive to the beautiful and historic Santiago de Compostela, the villages on the Camino de Santiago, and, should the attractions of the river and exploring the valley not be enough, an hour and a half away are the unspoilt beaches of the Galician coast, the Rias Baixas and the Portuguese border.

Notes on accommodation
The river is not fenced so the property is not suitable for those with small children. Sorry no pets and no smoking please. The property is not available for rental between November and March.

Accessibility
The track is rough and steep but accessible by ordinary vehicles. Cars have to be parked about 100 metres up a grassy track as the Mill has no adjacent vehicular access which is part of its charm. Those that have mobility difficulties might struggle a little. Please do give us a call and we'll talk you through this.
Adjacent to the Mill is a wooden footbridge over the Arnego.

Outside
The terraced gardens front the river with the original mill building still containing the four mill stones and machinery. The Mill is a paradise for walkers, fishermen, cyclists, horse riders and wildlife enthusiasts. An ideal retreat for a quiet family holiday - with access to the river parents must bear this in mind when taking children. The river is wonderful for swimming either in the pool in front of the house, or in the old mill pool where the water is warmer and more still. There is a barbecue and an additional raised covered area suitable for outdoor eating should it be wet.

Coast/Beach
The coast is an hour and a half away, along good main roads and motorways. The Rias Baixas is an interesting area with fishing villages and hidden bays.

Travel
Ryanair flies from Stansted to Santiago which is a 50 minute drive from the Mill (45 km). Several budget airlines fly to Porto (3 hrs away), Easyjet fly to Asturias (4 hrs away) and from Santiago to Geneva, and Vueling to A Coruna from London (90 min away). Iberia/BA fly to Santiago via Madrid. There are also direct flights from Santiago to several Spanish cities and a few other European ones. Brittany ferries sail from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander - it is 550 km to the Mill.

Distances
The Mill is only accessible with a car as it is over 3 km from the main road and the nearest town, Vila de Cruces is 15 minutes away.

Further details
Vila de Cruces: This friendly typical Galician town has everything you need with butchers, artisan baker, greengrocer and fishmongers either on or just off the main high street in addition to a few small supermarkets. There are many restaurants and bars, two of which have internet access. There is a petrol station and several ATMs. The surrounding villages hold traditional markets. The beautiful city of Santiago de Compostela, whose cathedral is the climax of the camino, is easily accessible and has superb Galician cuisine and a fabulous market. The historic centres of Pontevedra, A Coruna and Lugo all lie within easy reach.

"The Mill is such a hidden treasure - a perfect retreat for relaxation"

"It almost goes without saying how beautiful a place this is: the house is designed and fitted perfectly, and the sounds and sights of the river and local wildlife are the perfect backdrop"
Mr GJ June 10

"We have had a wonderful week in this special peaceful place - we swam, read, played boules and got to know the lizards"
Mr SN July 10

"We've had an amazing relaxing holiday. This place is gorgeous (the difference between our hectic lives in London and life at the Mill is such a contrast). We have really appreciated time together swimming both in the river and the lake and having both to ourselves, cooking delicious Gallegan fare and chilling outside under the vine canopy.... We thought the general standard and quality of the accommodation was amongst the highest we have come across (and we have rented lots of country houses in France, Spain and Portugal)

Owner profile

About the owner
We are a family of five living in rural North Yorkshire but when in Galicia we are known as 'the doctors'. We know how much we look forward to holidays and how important the memories are and hope that others will enjoy this very special place as much as we do.

Year purchased: 2008

Why the owner chose a home in this location
As a family we rented the Mill twice and all fell for its unique charm, so when we tried to book it again and found it was for sale, we talked of fate and dreams ... and bought it. We have found no better escape from our busy lives than spending time at the Mill - plenty to see and do if you wish, though lazy afternoons on the river, reading in the hammocks, sun-bathing on the wooden deck, meals cooked and eaten outside, and the chance to unwind, mean many people barely stray further than the valley. The stone buildings reflect the warmth and its history and the sound of the river is the last thing you hear at night and the first in the morning.
