Notes on accommodation
The Moorish style of the house with its thick walls and high ceilings mean that it is cool in the summer when temperatures reach 40 degrees celsius. Air con is not required but mobile fans are supplied. In winter the style of the house means that the use of a wood burning fire is required (logs purchased by tenant at their own cost). A portable halogen heater is provided for those colder February nights. We offer greater comfort than that we have enjoyed on our extensive travels across Spain. If you appreciate quality, stay with us. If not, don't! The property has many strengths. Tradition, character, convenience for City and beaches, to name just 3. There is ample parking close to the house but not directly outside it. Unloading shopping etc at the door is not a problem as we are on a rarely used, narrow street.
The high staircases and balconies leading from rooms and the roof terrace may make this property unsuitable for lively, curious or uncontrollable children. See notes below.
Accessibility
The apartment and roof terrace are reached by a staircase that would not be suitable for the disabled or unattended young children.
Outside
The vast roof terrace on the top floor has wide sweeping views of the Lecrin Valley, the local church and the snow capped mountains of Mondujar. Seats and sun lounger provided. Views to the characterful Andalucian patio of the main property. The roof terrace is home to many splendid potted plants which the owners need to water at times covenient to the tenant.
Coast/Beach
The beaches of Motril are a 20 min drive away. The castle topped coastline of Salobrena a further five minute drive. Almunecar, a popular coastal town which has a regular Friday market, is 40 mins away. The sublime La Herradura a further 5 minute drive along the Costa Tropical. This stretch of coastline is famous for having the only sub tropical climate in Europe. Hence its name! The beaches are long and many - such as those at Motril- are so wide that they never get full, even in summer.
Golf
The new Santa Clara golf course is a 10 minute drive away. It is located just off the motorway between Mondujar and Granada City. It benefits from stunning views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Also popular is the golf course at Playa Granada, Motril. The Los Moriscos golf course runs alongside the wide and often empty beaches of this unspoilt Spanish working town. When you tee off you can look to one side and see the Med or turn the other way and see the Sierra Nevada mountains which, from December to May, can be covered in snow. On Christmas Day 2006 the temperature on this golf course was a pleasant 24 degrees celsius. The new Elvira Golf course and housing development is 40 minutes away just outside the centre of Granada.
Skiing
The popular ski resort of the Sierra Nevada Mountains is between 45 and 55 mins from the house. This is the most southerly ski resort in Europe so it is famous for being warm. It may be a cliché, but it remains a fact that many people ski in the morning and drive to the beach in the afternoon. Many winter sports take place at the resort and the property owner can put a tenant in touch with some activity sport companies. When the snow is not there, mountain bike rides are very popular with visitors. The ski/snowboard season usually begins on Dec 1st and can run through to April, depending - obviously - on snowfall.
Special interest holidays
The owners offer tenants a tailor made Tapas Tour of the magnificent City of Granada. Buy your alcoholic drink and await the free tapas dish that is so typical of Granada. The longer you stay in one bar, the better the quality of the tapas that is provided. A superb way to while away an afternoon or an entire Sunday!
Also available are relaxed tours of the building we expect to be voted one of the new seven wonders of the world. The Alhambra Palace, and its Generalife gardens are 20 mins from the house. It is the most visited tourist attraction in all of Spain and it is easy to see why. Learn all about life in Granada before the conquest, and discover more about the history of the cooking of the area, via the informed and witty words of one Luis Benavides-Barajas. Author of 16 history and recipe books and former award winning Chef in the UK. This is an exclusive service only available, at extra cost, to those renting the apartment of Casa Molino. Prices upon request.
Travel
Granada airport is a 30 mins drive. Renamed Federico Garcia Lorca Granada-Jaen Airport, after Spain's most famous poet. His burial place is at Viznar, close to Granada City. The name of the airport is now longer than the terminal building! It is a small but efficient airport. Like the ones they used to make! Flights from Stansted, Liverpool, East Midlands, Milan, Rome & Paris, Madrid & Barcelona. A bus takes you into the City Centre. A hire car is a must to do justice to Granada province.
Distances
The Lecrin Valley is made up of a few white washed villages, all within easy driving or walking distance of each other. Smart buses pick up passengers in the villages and go to Granada, the coastal towns and the villages of La Alpujarra. Public transport is very cheap. Mondujar has one bar and shop of its own but the village merges with Lecrin and Talara. Here are the banks, essential shops and popular bars. All within a 5 minute walk from the front door. Also restaurants in Melegis and Restabal
Further details
There is a wealth of things to do in the Lecrin Valley or the Granada region as a whole. It suits those who like to do a great deal, and those who prefer to do as little as possible. It is a charming area and the local inhabitants are very friendly. A car is essential if you are to get the full benefit of all that is on offer within 1 hour drive of this property. The shops, bars, restaurants and history of Granada itself. The beaches, chirinquitos, bars and water sports that line the Costa Tropical. If you like to walk or cycle then again the area is perfect for you. It is very popular with such fit people. Restaurants exist in the Valley and, of course, they all offer the Menu de la Dia when - by daytime - you can enjoy a 3 or 4 course meal with a drink for as little as 7 euros. Granada is blessed with many good restaurants and excellent tapas bars. The City Centre has all the big name fashion stores and, of course, El Corte Ingles. However, visitors prefer to wander the atmospheric streets of the Albaicin area of the City. Here you could be forgiven for thinking you are in the souks of Morocco. Traditional tea houses sit side by side with colourful shops selling lamps, furniture, clothing, jewellery and all manner of other goodies. The Albaicin consists of many winding, cobbled, steep streets. The further you walk up the more genuine the area becomes. Off the tourist trail are tapas bars and superb restaurants - many have views that look across to the Alhambra Palace. We call it Granada's very own A.A. The Alhambra and the Albaicin; one taste and you are addicted to them for life! We also suggest visiting Barrio Realejo for a taste (literally) of genuine Granada.
More locally the shops include 3 mini markets, a butchers, hairdressers, garages, chemist and much more. Mondujar has a small market each Friday. On any one day, in one town or village, there is a market selling fruit, veg, dodgy DVDs and all manner of clothing you might buy but will never wear again!
