Located in the Barrio Alto, on a quiet street off the main square, next door to where Columbus stayed on the eve of his 3rd voyage to the Americas. In the square is 17th century palace of the Duchess of Medina Sidonia - her permanent residence. Within the palace is a charming café, which extends out into a beautiful garden – Ideal for breakfast. Adjacent is the Renaissance church of Nuestra Senora de la O, visible from our roof terrace. Nearby is the Palace of the Duke of Orleans y Bourbon, with gardens open during the day. The sloping roof terrace offers magnificent views over the town to the sea, and towards the shipwreck on the barrier reef - a prime spot to sit with a glass of the local manzanilla sherry and a bowl of olives, and watch spectacular sunsets and the storks circling their nest on the campanile of the Church of Caridad. There is a roof dining area with BBQ. We have a book full of recipe ideas and suggestions where to buy the best produce from the market.

Changeover day
Changeover days are flexible. Guests should try to arrive after 5pm and leave by 10am. Please confirm arrival and departure times. A telephone number that the guests can call should they be delayed will be sent in the confirmation email.

| Utility Room: | We keep all beach stuff, tennis rackets, balls etc downstairs in a large cupboard. There is also a substantial library here. Upstairs there is a cupboard containing DIY essentials. There is high speed internet upstairs. |
| Living Rooms: | The dining room has a teak table and chairs, teak sideboards. Decorative art works hang throughout the house. The sitting room has 3 comfortable sofas, teak coffee table and stereo. Games - scrabble, cards etc can be found in the library downstairs. |
| Other: | One enters the house through a large, ancient, oak door into an outer tiled hall, and then through an inner door. Andalucian custom is to close and lock the outer door during the siesta period (2.30 – 5.30) and when you do not wish to be 'at home’. |

Notes on accommodation
There are three bedrooms, two upstairs with double beds, and one with single beds downstairs. One of the bedrooms upstairs has a balcony. The dining room is linked through double doors to the sitting room which is furnished with sofas and a coffee table and side tables. All beds are made up for guests with cotton sheets and pillow cases.
Accessibility
Unfortunately the house is not suitable for wheelchair users.
Outside
There is a big roof terrace with a lower area for dining on and an upper terrace for sitting, sunbathing, admiring the sunsets, ideal for sundowners and watching the storks and the swallows.
Coast/Beach
The 6km Sanlucar beach is a 15 min walk (via the Calzada) if you don't stop at one of the 2 squares on the way, or at the market, or at one of the Manzanilla bodegas. Chipiona (15 mins by bus), 10 mins by car has a stunning beach and great swimming (our favourite). Rota offers miles of undeveloped beach, and the two beaches in Cadiz are excellent for swimming (If you like waves, the one on the left of the cathedral is for you. Careful of the current on the outside of the fortress).
Golf
There is a golf course on the outskirts of town, and several more around Jerez and Puerto Santa Maria (20 mins drive).
Skiing
The Sierra Nevada is a 2 hour drive at least.

Romeria del Rocio 12th, 13th 14th May. Feria de la Manzanilla - 21st - 25th May. Horse Races on the Beach 9th, 10th & 11th August and 23, 24 and 25 August. Feria of Tapas - 31 October - 4 November.

Travel
Ryanair fly twice daily to Jerez, a half hour taxi ride away. Car rental is an option; otherwise Manolo can pick you up (€35 well spent). Seville is an option - 1˝ hour drive, or a 2 hr bus journey. Malaga and Faro are also options with car hire. From Madrid the Ave train to Seville takes 2˝ hours, where you can catch a connection to Jerez. There is a very good (and cheaper) Renfe train that takes you all the way to Jerez. You will find the excellent local bus timetables in the house.
Distances
Bus journey times approx, so by car subtract accordingly - Jerez 35 mins. Chipiona 15 mins. Puerto Sta Maria 35 mins. Cadiz 1 hr. Rota 35 mins. Arcos de la Frontera 50 mins. Cadiz by car is only 30 mins away. Otherwise, further afield, Tarifa is about 100 mins, and Bolonia beach (one of the world's most beautiful beaches, with a view of Africa across the strait) is 90 mins. The ancient hill town of Vejer de la Frontera is 60 mins drive.
Further details
Every July and August there are the famous horse races on the beach. Semana Santa (Easter)involves the whole town, as does the Feria (May)- a week long party, during which all the women in the town spend the whole week dressed in Flamenco dresses. El Rocio pilgrimage is probably the most important local event. Recently, the nearby 12th century castle of Guzman el Bueno has opened its battlements to the public. The historic bull ring is busy from April to September, as is the extraordinary Plaza de Toros in Puerto Sta Maria. Located at the estuary-Bajo de Guia- of the Rio Guadalquivir, and facing the Coto Dońana National Park, are many of the finest fish restaurants in town (we recommend Bigote and Joselito). The park is a must see, and daily boat trips (3 hours) leave from the pier. It is worth visiting the Ice Museum before embarking on an excursion. Lynx still live here, as well as wild boar and the richest collection of bird life in Europe. We have a book in the house giving as much information about the town and the area as we have discovered - local shops, farmacias, bars, restaurants, tennis courts, bank opening/closing times etc. You will also find advice on where to go in the market to buy particular fish and food, and suggestions on how to cook it. We recommend bodega visits and where to refill your manzanilla bottle from the barrel, when to catch the high tide, where to rent bicycles, and how to enrol on a Spanish course or join a Flamenco dance class. Although there is a lot to do here, and something for everyone (the teenagers will love the shopping! And the town is totally safe for children), it is pleasant just to potter around the Barrio Alto, past the aromatic bodegas and chiming campaniles, down into the Plaza Cabildo for the evening paseo, and back up to the Palacio de Medina Sidonia for a quiet read and a chilled glass of manzanilla in the garden. Above all, you will find yourself experiencing a place that has retained its true Andaluz character.
