Notes on accommodation
The house is a large, old, restored village property with a grand sense of space and light. It has many traditional features such as beams, thick walls, niche cupboards, and is well furnished. The two ground floor bedrooms are spacious, light and airy, as is the upstairs day room, which has a large double sofabed and cooking and washing facilities. The garden is large and peaceful with mature fruit trees (custard apple, sharon fruit, orange) and roses, a lawn, terraces and covered patio and a raised barbecue area as well as a 5 by 3 m swimming pool. One can reach the coast and beaches in twenty minutes, Granada, with the Alhambra and other attractions, within an hour, and the ski resorts or the Alpujarra in the same time. The climate in the valley is sub-tropical, and the winters are like an English summer (except that at nights it is chilly enough to need heating) and due to the proximity of the valley to the coast the summers are pleasant and considerably cooler than further inland.

Accessibility
The house is located at the end of a little alley, just 20 metres from the church square (with adjoining parking). The layout of the house is such that wheelchair access to the ground floor rooms and the garden would be possible.

Outside
The garden is open and shady with two terraces, a covered porch and a raised platform/barbecue area, and garden furniture. There is a lawn, and mature fruit trees (custard apple, sharon fruit, orange) and rose bushes. A charming feature is an (irrigation) water channel that runs along one edge of the garden immediately adjacent to the barbecue area. On the other side of the barbecue area is a 5m x 3m swimming pool. There is a first floor roof terrace in two parts, one with a washing machine, sink and laundry facilities installed, and one with a table and chairs, and magnificent views - from the garden and the roof terraces are vistas of el Castellijo, a historic (from the time of the arab domination of Spain) ruin on a ridge on the opposite side of the valley, as well as of the mountains and Guajar Fondon, to the south.

Coast/Beach
The coast is 20 minutes drive away, and once there one is a short distance from Motril, with a golf course, beaches and a marina, and Salobrena, with beaches, and tourist facilities and an enchanting historic old town and moorish castle. A little further away (10 minutes drive) is Almunecar, the flagship tourist town of the province of Granada. Once on the Costa Tropical one has a wide choice of towns, beaches (isolated, trendy, crowded, nudist, empty, take your pick) golf courses, etc.

Golf
There is a large golf course in Motril 20 minutes drive away.

Skiing
One can reach the Sol y Nieve ski resort of the Sierra Nevada within an hour... this has recently been greatly improved with good access, multi-level underground carpark, more lifts, snow machines and 25 -75km of piste, not to mention infrastructure such as shops, restaurants, bars, hotels, ski hire etc. The season lasts, normally, from November to April and one can comfortably drive up for a day's skiing; the pistes open at 9 am and close at 4:15 pm, leaving ample time to return or to spend an evening in Granada.

Travel
Airports to consider are Malaga (the most convenient for the coast) or alternatively Almeria or Granada. A car is recommended as there is only a limited bus service for the villages (one bus a day and back to Motril two a day and back to Granada, and none on Sundays) but if necessary airport pickup can be arranged.

Distances
Granada 65km
Motril 20km
Almunecar 30km
Nerja 40km
Sierra Nevada ski resort 85 m
Malaga airport 110km

Further details
The valley is exceptionally beautiful and untouched by mass tourism, but there are five bars/restaurants in the three villages that are aware of the interest that los Guajares attracts and where one can eat cheaply and well - typically a three course meal consisting of a tureen of thick soup, a second course of chicken or pork or rabbit with patatas a la pobre (‘poor peoples potatoes’ but in fact very rich, soft cooked in olive oil with onions and green peppers), a salad, and to finish, a home made confection of quince with goat cheese, and coffee, all with a jug of local wine, for less than ten euros. There are wonderful walks, one of which is to a fairytale location, a ruined fortified village (el Castellijo) dating from the time of the Moors, on a ridge overlooking Guajar Faraguit. Parts of the river are used for swimming in the summer and there is a spot for this close to the house and another one a little further away where the town hall dams the river in the summer to create depth, with shady trees, and a gravel area beside the river. A little distance away is a riverside picnic spot, with tables and seats under the trees, and a waterfall. One minute away from the house is a small shop that sells a bit of everything; frozen fish, firelighters, flyspray, Fairy liquid, fruit... (it may be difficult to find an avocado or a custard apple, as locals grow their own, and have no need to buy them!). For a wider selection there is a supermarket at the top of the town (5 minutes walk) and a bank, pharmacy, bar/restaurant and two bakeries. Here on Saturday mornings is the weekly market, with stallholders selling, amongst other things, clothes, shoes, kitchenware, dried fruit and nuts, flowers. Every day the bakers van, the fishmonger and the fruit and vegetable van do their rounds, converging on the church square (at the same time as the little municipal dustcart) at about half past ten, a time for local housewives to emerge, shop and exchange gossip.
