Accessibility
An easy and beautiful scenic drive through lovely countryside. When you arrive in Serena there is ample parking immediately outside the property. There is a short paved slope up to the front door of the cottage. There is a separate entrance through a gate in the courtyard leading to a stable door opening into the kitchen. The swimming pool can be accessed both from the kitchen and from tiled steps leading down from the upper terrace.

Outside
The cottage has a private swimming pool enclosed in a walled terraced garden, edged with various trees and plants including bougainvillea, jasmine and orange, lemon and palm trees. This secluded terrace has a large table and 8 chairs, a large umbrella, sun-loungers and a barbecue. There are numerous outside lights and the pool is lit up at night; a delight in the long balmy evenings. There are seat cushions and pool toys for guests to use. The cottage also has a large upper terrace with table and chairs, and with steps leading down to the pool. The pool is open for swimming May - September and at other times by special arrangement. It is recommended that children are supervised at all times in the pool area.

Close to the cottage is a ruined mosque, originally built on the site of a Roman temple. Opposite the mosque is the entrance to the Rambla. This is the start of a very pleasant walk, past the old mill, to the “Hidden Valley”, with its spectacular scenery.

Coast/Beach
South of Mojacar is the rugged and desolate coast of the Cabo de Gata - Nijar natural park. This is an arid desert landscape. Many of the coves can only be reached on foot. The last remaining unspoilt beaches of the Mediterranean are located near San Jose; amongst these, Mónsul and Los Genoveses stand out. There are 9 beaches at Mojacar itself, stretching away to Garrucha, catering for most tastes. North of Vera the coast becomes rugged again, until it dips down to the golden sands of Aguilas.

Golf
There are a number of golf courses within easy reach of Bedar. The closest is just outside Turre at Cortijo Grande. There is a very popular club restaurant here and the course is suitable for beginners. At Valle del Este there is an 18 hole course suitable for low and high handicappers again offering good club facilities. Desert Springs in the Almanzora Valley also has 18 holes with water hazards. A new golf resort has recently been completed at Macenas Beach just outside Mojacar. There is also a course in Mojacar at Marina del Torre, 18 holes; handicap card required. There are good practice facilities at all the courses except for Las Macenas. However, the best deals for green fees are usually to be found here. The best course is undoubtedly Desert Springs; unsurprisingly, it is also the most expensive. Marina del Torre has a tiny par three course for those wanting a pitch and putt experience. All these courses are within a 30 minute drive. Other courses are a bit further away.

Skiing
The most southerly ski resort in Europe is to be found at Sol y Nieve (Sun and Snow) in the Sierra Nevada near Granada, about a 3-hour drive from Serena. We travel there and back in a day (albeit a long one!). Towards the end of the season it is possible to ski in the morning and sunbathe in the afternoon on the Costa del Sol.

The resort, Pradollano, is at 2100 metres. There are 79 runs catering for skiers of all abilities and none. Skiing is from December to April, and there are snow machines to back up nature. Night skiing is also offered.

Travel
Almeria is the closest airport (50 minutes drive from the property). Other suitable airports include Alicante a drive of about 2hours and Murcia 1.5 hours. Use of car is essential.
Flights from many International airports in the UK and Europe and in particular with Easyjet, Monarch and Ryanair.
Travelling by car, the journey time from the French border with Spain is about 10 hours.
From Perpignan drive to Barcelona then down the east coast of Spain to Valencia and Murcia.

Distances
Bedar with local amenities including 3 bars and 2 restaurants is about 3 minutes drive from Serena.
Turre with further amenities including bars, shops, restaurants and a supermarket is about 15 minutes drive.
The beaches at the popular resort of Mojacar Playa are a 20 minute drive (20km).
The start of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar is a scenic drive of about 30 mins.

Further details
The locality: the cottage offers peace and tranquility, nestling on the edge of the small cluster of properties in the pretty village of Serena on the slopes of the Sierra de los Filabres, enjoying wonderful views over lovely countryside with orange and lemon groves, yet only a short 3 minute scenic drive from the old mountain village of Bedar. Bedar also enjoys beautiful scenery with views down to the sea and provides good local amenities including bars, a baker's, bank, small supermarket, pharmacy and doctor. The two restaurants Miramar and La Fuente serve traditional Spanish cuisine, fresh fish and seafood and lamb is a speciality. Both restaurants have terraces with panoramic views.
Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Serena and country walks, sample the village atmosphere in Bedar or join in the bustling nightlife in Mojacar.
Places to visit: Mojacar Playa is a smart resort within a short drive from Bedar. The beaches extend for about 6 kilometres. There are numerous bars and restaurants along the coastal road overlooking the sea and some beside the beach have chairs and parasols for hire. In the hillside above the Playa is the old town known as Mojacar Pueblo, with a magnificent viewing platform in the Plaza Nueva. Taking the road out of Mojacar in one direction you arrive at the old fishing port and marina at Garrucha, and beyond the old fishing village and two harbours at Villaricos, and the golden sand beaches at Aguilas. In the other direction, driving through the mountains, you pass through the oasis at Sopalmo into the resort at Carboneras and out into the Cabo de Gata-Nijar natural park. Here you can explore the pretty coves and secluded beaches along the way and stop off at the quaint coastal villages of Las Negras and Agua Amarga, the idyillic Isleta del Morro and the old mining town at Rodalquilar. Nearer to home there is a water park with slides at Vera Playa, karting at Garrucha, and at Tabernas a wild west theme park.

Owner profile

Still our favourite after all these years!

About the owner
Geoff is a civil engineer and Sue is a teacher. We live and work in Ukraine at present. We have three grown up children. Serena is our home (when we're between contracts), so it is equipped accordingly, not as a holiday let.

Year purchased: 2000

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We were looking to purchase a home in the sun, close to beaches, golf courses and ski slopes, but not in a resort. We wanted an old house that we could renovate, in a quiet Spanish village, with enough space for a garden and a pool. Serena fitted the bill! We completed renovations in 2005, built an annexe in 2006, and commenced holiday lettings in 2007. The Cortijo has been full every summer since then and is used by family and friends at other times. We have even had lettings at Christmas/New Year, when the mild, sunny weather is great for golfing or walking holidays. This is the time that the almond trees start to blossom, and the orange trees are full of fruit.

Unique benefits of the property
Peace and tranquillity! Far from the madding crowd, yet near enough to all amenities. No traffic noise. No traffic! Great walking and cycling, both flat and hilly. Watching the shadows climb the mountain at dusk, with a glass of chilled Rioja Blanco. Pure magic. Watching Iberian Ibex on the mountain at sunrise, with a cup of tea. Having been awoken by the village cockerel. Siestas! Wild mountain thyme. Night swimming. Good food and good company. Who needs more?
