Mill House for holidays near Juviles / Berchules, Las Alpujarras, Andalucia
The Mill
A Magical, Secluded Country House Set in its Own Valley
Sleeps up to 8 (3 Bedrooms)
|
|
The Mill is a truly unique property, a wonderful rural retreat set in its own private "barranco" (valley), surrounded by over a hectare of mature woodland and a constantly flowing river cascading down through the finca forming numerous natural pools which are perfect for cooling down in the heat of summer. The Mill house itself offers spacious accommodation over 3 levels and has been carefully restored over several years, retaining much of its rustic charm - the old mill workings and grinding stones are still there - while attention to detail is evident everywhere, with slate stone floors throughout and even LED lights in the bathroom floors and walls! Each of the 3 ensuite bedrooms have their own external entrances - one down beside the river, and the other two leading from a "tinao" - a feature of Alpujarran/Berber architecture which connects separate rooms. But the star of the show is water - the river, 3 fountains keeping the air cool, and of course, the swimming pool and hot tub.

Notes on accommodation
Heating in the winter is provided by oil-filled radiators and fan heaters in the bathrooms. There is a large wood-burning stove in the living room, and we will supply fuel.
All bedrooms have fans, although these are unlikely to be needed due to the thickness of the stone walls! There is also a DVD player in each room with selection of DVDs.
The Mill is a great place for children to explore and have fun (very Enid Blyton in fact!), but, while all steep drops and river walls are barriered, it may be unsuitable for very young children.
Accessibility
As indicated above, the finca tumbles down the valley over several terraces and levels, following the river. There is a short walk (about 150m) downhill from the car park to the house which will be unsuitable for the elderly or infirm. We will always be on hand to meet guests and help with luggage.
Outside
The swimming pool (circular 6m diameter) is towards to top of the property and thus benefits from spectacular open views to the south as well as all-day sunshine. The hot tub is on a terrace outside the house nestled beside a charming little cave. It can be heated to 40C in the winter.
There is a huge BBQ beside the house at the river side along with an enormous banquet table and chairs for enjoying dinner al fresco. Scattered throughout the several terraces are 6 sunloungers with tables - perfect if you want to find a quiet spot away from even other members of your group!

The nearest beach is La Rabita, which is 40 minutes away by car.

Further details
We think The Mill will be a favourite for families and groups of friends who want to chill out in absolute privacy and wonderfully calming, tranquil surroundings.
We offer guests a food shopping service so that the fridge is stocked before you arrive. There's no charge for this - we'll just give you the receipt on arrival. For additional provisions, there is a well-stocked grocers in Juviles, along with 3 bars, pharmacy and a bank. There are 2 excellent restaurants in Berchules.
There are loads of activities close at hand for guests at The Mill. Take a walk across the little suspension bridge and follow the river to where is joins the famous GR7 walking route. An easy 30 minute walk takes you to the top of El Fuerte (meaning "strong") with the remains of a 10th century Moorish citadel, and a very colourful history! Not surprisingly, the views are terrific and there are plenty of flat grassy areas if you decide to take a picnic. We also provide 4 mountain bikes for guests, free of charge.
Trevelez, the highest village in Spain and famous for its cured ham, is the starting point for walks up Mulhacen (the highest mountain in mainland Spain at 3400m), taking in the beautiful "Seven Lakes" on the way up. There are copies of The Rough Guide to Andalucia, Jeremy Rabjohn's excellent "Holiday Walks in The Alpujarra" and a detailed walking map which you can take with you whenever you're heading out.
In the house, there is a good library of books and magazines to wile away the hours in the sun, and a selection of board games.
We also host weekly dinner parties at out new house in Soportujar (45 minutes' drive), and guests are very welcome to join us and our other guests from Canar!
