Notes on accommodation
Casa Descanso has been lovingly restored and furnished to a high standard providing comfortable and relaxing accommodation. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms fitted.
Accessibility
Due to the nature of the surrounding terrain we regret this property is not suitable for wheelchair users.
Outside
The vine shaded terrace, overlooking the vineyards and river, creates the perfect setting for dining alfresco whilst enjoying a bottle or two of the local wine at the same time soaking up the magnificence of the view around. It is equipped with seating for six.
The open terrace with sun loungers, occasional tables and umbrellas offers the opportunity for sunbathing or just relaxing.
The front courtyard has its own private parking.
The area is rich in wildlife and it is not unusual to see deer scamper across the hills or to see birds of prey.
Coast/Beach
Ten minute walk from the house to the river. Man made sandy river beach at Coba as well as a river beach at Quiroga. Outdoor swimming pools at Sober and Monforte de Lemos. Sandy beaches and the Cie isles at Vigo.
Canoeing and quadbiking available on request. Please note that if you wish to fish in the river a fishing permit is required. Please ask us for details at the time of booking/arrival.
Golf
There is a local nine hole golf course in Monforte de Lemos and an 18 hole golf course in Panton with excellent facilities and driving range.
Skiing
There is a ski slope with chair lifts at Manzaneda.

We recommend this holiday if what you are looking for is culture, tradition, sightseeing, a relaxing holiday simply to get away or the perfect ending to relax following your Pilgrim Walk to Santiago De Compostela. Let the nature and beauty of Portabrosmos enfold you in its splendour. It has wonderful wild life especially birds. Its scenery offers plenty of scope for landscape painting or just sketching. There are many viewpoints scattered around the area providing wonderful photo opportunities and sights. Viewpoints close by are located at Doade, Santiorxo and Cadeiras. These are a few of the many located around the area.
Historic town of Monforte de Lemos: roman bridge, wine museum and popular colexio building.
Sober: Local black pottery crafted in Gundivos using ancient methods.
Ourense: Bridges and shopping area. The town is situated on the banks of the Rio Miño and has several outdoor natural hot water spas. Take a ride on the noddy train and see the old town.
Lugo: walk the Roman wall circling the old and new town.
Vigo: Is well known for its beaches and the Islas de Cie.
Santiago de Compostela: The focal point for Santiago pilgrims, its imposing cathedral and main square overlooking the city. Its tourist train winds a path through both the old and new part of the city.

About the owner
We retired to Galicia about five and a half years ago where we live in a typically Galician spacious stone farmhouse. Our neighbours are like family now and we have settled in very happily and become part of the community. Although we keep ourselves busy the pace of life is relaxed and tranquil and we have truly found ourselves "the good life".

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We chose this stone house in Portabrosmos with its own vineyard for its tranquility, spectacular views and location in the Canyon of the Rio Sil. The peace created by the stunning view and wildlife around provides the ingredients for a rural retreat and relaxing holiday - perfect for those getaway from it all holidays. Its vine shaded terrace creates the perfect setting for lazy lunches or intimate drinks overlooking the river while the open terrace is ideal for sunbathing. The house is surrounded by the vineyards of the Ribeira Sacra ('Sacred River') which become a hive of activity towards the end of September/early October as the grape harvest is brought in. Excitement is tangible and high as the year´s work tending the grapes has come to an end. It is now time for wine making.

Waking up to the stunning view of the Ril Sil Canyon is the holiday with a difference and one that you will always remember. Relaxation, tranquility and its rural aspect provide you with a unique chance to explore the surroundings and the locals. Even though English is not widely spoken there is nothing the villagers love more than to invite you into their bodega and exchange conversation over a glass or two. The Gallegos in this part are very friendly and will always extend a greeting or wave. The scenic drives around provide many a photo opportunity although photos cannot convey the true beauty of this landscape. Being centrally located it is within easy reach of Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, Lugo and Ourense. There is so much to see and do. We look forward to welcoming you!
