Further details
Almunecar has a beautiful water park overlooking the mediterranean with slides, pools, etc. Large tropical gardens, restaurants, entertainment, face painting & fun things for the children. Whilst they play safely you can relax with a drink under a palm tree! Full day €13, (£8.50) half day €7 (under £5)
There is also a tropical bird sanctuary under palm trees just below the castle.
The Waterfalls - this is another of my favorite places to visit, not many people seem to know about this paradise! Clean, clear, water melting from the Sierra Nevada where two rivers meet. It is a lovely hour's drive through a cherimoya plantation, through the mountains & two small villages. Once there, you will not want to leave, children and adults can dive into deep limestone rock pools. I like to sit in the shallow cascading fall & pools, it's better than a jacuzzi!. Plus spectacular scenery and wildlife (there are always deer to be seen). Take a picnic and cross the swing bridge over one of the waterfalls above a wonderful green valley, which was once a river bed, now filled with exotic trees & flowers and incredible rock formations and trickling streams. Amazing!

Guest comments
Its not very often I write a review in fact this is my first. I feel I must because this was simply the best house we have stayed in with our young family. We arrived feeling tired and tense and by the end of our week which flew by we left feeling very much revived, relaxed and very sad to leave.
The house has a wonderful feel about it, fabulous views and is so comfortable I could have stayed forever. We all made ourselves right at home and the place was very well equipped, clean and well maintained. It is a wonderful place any time of year. The hostess Kate was a true gem, very friendly, very helpful and kind without being intrusive. Steve the host was also lovely, very relaxed and helpful. They seem to take a very hands on approach and a real pride in the place which is a refreshing change from the many places you stay in and feel short-changed. I would recommend this place to anybody with or without children, it was just a wonderful place to chill out and take stock. Sarah, UK

Relaxing in the pool

About the owner
Please allow me to introduce myself and describe to you my unique holiday home, Nomad's Retreat. My name is Kate and I invite you to stay at what has been described as "a little taste of paradise" in southern Spain. It is important to me that all my guests are made to feel welcome here and to relax and unwind from the everyday stresses of normal life, and to enjoy what I have created here. I am a country girl at heart, from a small village in Yorkshire and although I have travelled extensively in my busy life, I felt I wanted to return back to nature and its simple pleasures. I am artistic by nature and love creating things, many of which are to be found inside the house. It gives me great pleasure to receive kind comments from guests and look forward to meeting you too.

Year purchased: 2000

Why the owner chose a home in this location
When selecting where to relocate in Spain, I researched extensively before deciding on the Costa Tropical because of its warm climate, its natural beauty and the fact it is not over-developed. I've tried to create a home full of interest ... a romantic relaxing home that guests will remember forever. I set about building the house with my 7 year old son, Damon ... and the name "Nomad's Retreat" is a testimony to him ... it's his name spelt backwards! I didn't want to design a normal, bland house ... I wanted to create charm and character so guests could relax, take in the views and atmosphere from every room and enjoy the tranquility of this special setting. The house stands in an acre of landscaped tropical gardens, very secluded yet only a 10 minute drive to town.

Unique benefits of the property
I used local materials to build the house, including carved wooden beams and a traditional thatched roof and collected natural local artefacts to furnish the house. There are also many decorative pieces that adorn the inside of the house that I have either made myself or collected from my travels around the World. The house is spacious and well ventilated, making it cool in the summer and warm in the winter with the large open fire in the lounge. With uninterrupted views over the sea, Nomad's Retreat is set in a unique, private location away from the crowds, yet within easy reach of good coastal road links, the 3 local airports, and for the winter visitor, the ski resort at Sierra Nevada, only an hour away. Many of the guests who have stayed here say they do not want to leave!
