Owner profile
Andy and Jan Nichols in Marina del Este
About the owner
My husband and I live in Exeter, Devon. I am a teacher at a high school in Exeter. I organise special needs provision.
Andy, my husband, is a builder and built our own house in Exeter. He loves cricket and plays regularly in the Devon league
We try to get out to our house at least 3 or 4 times a year, but are limited to school holidays and missing as few games as possible during the cricket season!
Year purchased: 2005
Why the owner chose a home in this location
About 5 years ago, my husband did some research on the internet, looking for places away from the built-up towns in the Costa del Sol but within easy travelling distance of Malaga. We had no serious intentions of buying when we flew to Spain but, out of interest, looked at some houses from the Lingwood estate agents. We were bowled over by the area of Monte de los Almendros, which has astounding views over Salobrena, the sea and Sierra Nevada mountains. It had much better community facilities than neighbouring communities. We chose our villa for the stunning location and views; it was one of the first houses to be built on the Monte, was 40 years old and needed a lot of renovation. We spent the next 2-3 years, renovating the house and putting in a pool, terracing etc.
Unique benefits of the property
Andy and I love the area of Salobrena. It is real, unspoilt Spain. The whole area feels tropical, with sugar cane fields and luscious fruit trees, such as oranges, lemons, lychees and figs, growing in abundance. The town is a busy, Spanish working town with quiet bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a good meal or just tapas with a drink. There are no noisy nightclubs, loud football bars or loutish teenagers. It is surrounded by magnificent national parks and takes less than an hour to reach Grenada, winter skiing or the lower Sierra Nevada mountains where there are beautiful walks and beautiful villages.
