El Tejar is the highest house in small village ¼ hour from Ronda. From its lofty perch you have extraordinary panoramic views of the Grazalema Mountains. The house, which has been featured in many interior design magazines, is decorated in Andalusian/Moroccan style evoking the region's Moorish past. Base elements of whitewashed beams and terracotta floors have been stylishly combined with warm colour washes.
There are masses of books, CD players in all rooms and many of paintings and framed prints. Bedrooms have the same bright/ethnic feel: linen is top of the range, mattresses too, and all are big on space. And sculpted into the hillside is a gorgeous pool surrounded by terraced areas, shaded by quince, olive, almond and citrus trees. A wholly exceptional rental property.
The help of a housekeeper is included in the rental price: Francisca cleans and can, if you wish, prepare you delicious Andalusian meals. There is an iMac computer with wifi for your laptop.

Notes on accommodation
The house is built on several different levels and so there are a number of stairs, making it unsuitable for toddlers or the handicapped. Because of the thick exterior walls and exuberant vegetation there's no need for air-conditioning in the summer though all rooms are provided with fans. Radiators and 2 wood burning stoves provide ample heating during the mild Andalusian winter. There is a computer with free 24 hour Internet access. A charming housekeeper, Francisca, cleans and tidies every day and can prepare meals for guests, should they wish.

Accessibility
Not suitable for disabled because of the number of stairs and steps on outside terraces.

Outside
There are a number of shaded terraces surrounding the house with a spectacular lozenge-shaped pool (7m x 5.5m) sculpted into the hillside. On the top terrace are cushioned chairs and a glass topped table for al fresco dining. The gardens are beautiful: there are almonds, citrus, palms, bougainvillea, bignonia, pomegranate and quince trees and thick stands of bamboo.

Coast/Beach
The nearest beaches, with excellent oceanside bars and restaurants, are in San Pedro and Marbella, just an hour's drive from El Tejar. To reach the fabulous Atlantic coast beaches takes about 2 hours.

Golf
The nearest golf courses are in San Pedro, an hour's drive from El Tejar and in Arcos, about 45 minutes away.

Special interest holidays
The owner of El Tejar is the author of 'Small Hotels & Inns of Andalucía', 'Walking in Andalucía', 'The Andalucian Coast to Coast Walk' and 'Coastal Walking in Andalucía'. Included in our extensive guest information pack are details of the best walks in the area. It is also possible to arrange for bike hire in Ronda - we can recommend cycling routes.

Travel
Jerez is the nearest airport, a 1 hour drive away. Sevilla (90 mins), Málaga (90 mins) and Gibraltar (120 mins) are all easily accessible from El Tejar. To drive to Montecorto from Bilbao and Santander takes a full day ie approx 10 hours driving time.

Distances
The beautiful hilltop town of Ronda is just 15 minutes from El Tejar. Jerez is just an hour away and Granada, Sevilla and Málaga can all be easily visited as day trips. And two of the prettiest of the 'pueblos blancos', Grazalema and Zahara, are less than 20 minutes from El Tejar.

Further details
In Montecorto there are a number of small shops where you can buy all the essentials. There is also a bank, chemists, post office, doctor's surgery and a number of bars and restaurants. In Ronda there area number of larger supermarkets as well as other interesting shops and, of course, masses of excellent restaurants including the Michelin-starred 'Tragabuches'.

Booking notes
A 25% deposit of the weekly rental is required on booking. The remaining balance is paid 2 months prior to arrival. Payment is in £ sterling to a British bank account.
We do not take a deposit, preferring to work on trust, asking guests to let us know if anything should get broken.

Guest comments
The travel writer Alastair Sawday recently described El Tejar as one of his favourite place to stay in Spain - not bad considering there are almost 500 places listed in his guide! El Tejar is also a recommended listing with i-escape.com as well as Trip Advisor. See our website, detailed below, for many more guest testimonials.

About the owner
I am a freelance writer and travel journalist and have lived in southern Spain for more than twenty years. My specialist areas are walking and places to stay, my publications include 'Walking in Andalucía', 'The Andalucian Coast to Coast Walk', and 'Small Hotels and Inns of Andalucía'. My love of travel is reflected in the spirit of El Tejar: the house is decorated with beautiful art and fabrics and was designed to celebrate the exceptional beauty of the surrounding countryside thanks to an abundance of window openings. We pride ourselves on having some of the best information for guests in Andalucía which describes walks, great tapas bars, friendly restaurants and interesting visits. We aim to give you a very special insight into this unique part of Spain when you come to stay.

Year purchased: 1980's

Why the owner chose a home in this location
I first came to the Ronda mountains on a walking holiday in 1985 and was immediately entranced by the beauty of the area. I made myself a promise that one day I'd return to live here and in 1987 I took a week off from a teaching job in Salamanca to look for a property. I was told there was an old terracotta tile factory for sale at the top of the small village of Montecorto and headed up to see it. When I saw the views, the running water and the abundance of fruit trees I knew immediately that 'this was it' and went straight to Ronda to see the owner. Two hours later we signed a document that made me the new owner. It was certainly 'one from the heart' and a decision that I've never regretted.

Unique benefits of the property
Being the almost highest house in the village El Tejar, and surrounded by mature trees to three sides and with no other buildings visible to the south the house feels extremely private in spite of being just a five minute walk from shops, bars and restaurants. Perhaps the property's most unique feature is having 2.5hours of daily housekeeping from a lovely village lady called Francisca whose smiling and ever-helpful nature means that you get an extra dimension to a holiday that few rentals homes are able to offer. Paqui will clean the kitchen, make beds and can even cook for you, meaning that your precious holiday is doubly restful. And although you may not choose to use it, having the use of a computer with free (wifi) internet means that you can stay in touch with friends and family.
