Cortijo el Cura is an authentic, Andalusia countrey house, situated on 2.500qm very peaceful, green and beautiful land with a completely private pool (4m x 7m plus a shallow infantile area, fenced and safe for small children, open from March to November) surrounded by lush vegetation, shady orange, avocado-and hundred-year-old, spectacular, olive trees and a very nice green lawn, playground and barbecue. It is right in the heart of the evergreen Alpujarras, on the fertile southern slopes of the snow capped Sierra Nevada, a remote, rural area with stunning views on the mountains and a mild Mediterranean climate from the nearby coast. Cortijo el Cura is completely private and secluded, it has recently been completely restored and decorated in the traditional Andalusia-Arabic style. Its two foot thick walls, its bedroom hollowed into the rock, its vine-covered terrace which stretches the entire length of the house, and its seclusion give this cortijo a very special and private feeling.

Accessibility
Car can be parked right beside the house. It is 1,5 miles to walk over a country lant to the village of Órgiva.

Outside
Orgiva is a lively Andalusian village, picturesque situated in a large valley in the south of Granada, right between the rugged and snow covert mountains and the Costa Tropical, surrounded by wild, green and well-balanced countryside, rivers and thousands of years old olive and productive orange groves. The property is an organic farm producing its own olive oil and almost all over the year our guests can find rip fruits ready to be taken right from the trees. Alongside its numerous street cafes, bars, small shops, the weekly market and the indoor market, Orgiva also offers supermarkets, banks, a post office, a cinema, and an emergency medical centre. It´s 20 minutes walking to Órgiva and only 18 miles to the Costa Tropical, where you still can find beautiful and peaceful beaches and bays where will be only a fish restaurant right beside the water. In the mountains are many hiking trails passing by high peaks, sleepy villages, rivers, asequias and lagoons to enjoy a refreshing bath.

Coast/Beach
It will be a pleasure to us to offer all our experience we could gather in the 20 years we are living in the area to give you any kind of practical tips and advises about what-when-where-how to do, like it could be nice spins, beaches, restaurants, culture events, tickets booking etc. We really want to give you the chance to dive in to the authentic Andalusia. We also can arrange flamenco lessons in the house, horse-or alpine trekking in the area and ski excursions to the ski resorts.

Golf
On the Costa Tropical, about 15 miles away are wonderful golf resorts.

Skiing
Experience a completely different skiing holiday in southern Spain! Depending on your mood and the weather conditions, you can go or skiing in the Sierra Nevada, lap up the sunshine under a palm tree at a street cafe on the Costa Tropical or enjoy a tour of the world famous Alhambra Palace in the fascinating and light-hearted student city of Granada. Sierra Nevada (50 miles from the house) is the most modern ski resort in Spain and has more sunny days than any other ski resort in Europe. A high certainty of snow, enjoying 96km long, wide ski runs on altitudes between 3400m and 2000m, low prices and a really friendly environment make Sierra Nevada an ideal winter holiday destination. While back at your cosy holiday home there is a welcoming open fire and if you wish a Finnish wood sauna, which we will be happy to prepare both for you by prior arrangement. There are a hot line and a webside which has any information about the weather and snow conditions at the ski resort every morning.

Further details
The time of the Moors and Arab rule lasted almost 900 years and left more of an impression on The Alpujarras than on any other region of Spain. The legacy of Arabic art and culture can still be seen in the style of building, the intricate irrigation system, and the local crafts, music and art. From the Arabs came recipes, which creatively combine meat or fish with fruit and herbs. They brought figs, pomegranates, citrus fruit, olives and melons with them and these sun loving fruits are still flourishing in The Alpujarras today, alongside strawberries, prickly pears, peaches, cherries, apples, pears, quince, walnuts, chestnuts and almonds. On the property are about 30 different arts of fruit trees, and the whole year one can pick fresh, organic fruits right from the tree, ripe oranges even from October until June! The flowering time starts beginning February with the almond flower. The famous and historically significant and revered orange tree flower (El Azahar) spends its pleasant and enchanting scent during the whole April.
Alpujarran cuisine doesn't boast any refinements, it's more about the earthy real tastes of the ingredients - and thanks to the variety of altitudes and climate zones here there's an abundance of foods on offer: air dried mountain ham, all types of sausages and cheese, meat, fish and vegetables, potatoes and eggs prepared in various ways, fruit, swell as every possible variation on olives. Many of these fine ingredients lend their charm to all sorts of Tapas, delicious nibbles whose home is Andalucia; accompanied by a glass of Fino, sherry, the world famous wine from the sunshine land of the Spanish south.
Other activities you can practice in the area: Fishing, swimming, mountain climbing, paragliding, golf, mountain biking, horse riding, skiing, surfing, diving, tennis, walking, snowboarding, kite-surfing, dog-sledding, white-water rafting, canoeing, Flamenco dancing, quats spins, paint ball.

Guest comments
'This is a special place to relax and enjoy, an oasis in a world beset by problems. Take in the evenings to watch the changing colours and shadows over the Sierra De Lujar and the Sunset. Enjoy.' Michael King.

'We were here at El Cura for 2 weeks for our honeymoon and its been a little heaven in the Alpujarras. Sitting at the terrace lapping up the sun after dips in the pool has been wonderful. Especially reading Driving over Lemons by Chris Stewart who lives down the valley. The best bit is the tranquility of El Cura, sleeping in the cave, lazing by the pool and enjoying the sun with fantastic views. Enjoy!' Sam and Scott.

The terrace has been a joy. The sounds of the birds, water, the sight of such hills and the glorious sent of lemon and orange blossom...the azahar! Barbara & Jeremy.

Fantastic spot, beautiful scenery and wonderful weather. Joel family.

Owner profile

25 years later, I'm still in heaven. I love it!

About the owner
I dropped into the Alpujarras by accident being on a journey all over Spain. This was happening in the mid 80's and it was at the same time as the famous book writer Chris Stewart arrived into the area. Years later he published his bestseller "Driving over lemons" where he tells all these funny stories and amazing experiences he had to go across and in fact, I discovered the same kind of an authentic unspoiled paradise as he did. Obviously the south of Granada was in these days a bit different to what it is now. The area was very poor, not many cars but lots of donkeys, TV was just coming in and people actually "lived" in the bars. There was no VAT tax yet and no highway hundreds of miles around. Granada was a day journey away and northern Europe a different planet. I was in heaven.

Year purchased: 1994
