Cortijo Derry a beautifully renovated Spanish farmhouse lies in a peaceful valley in Orgiva 10 mins drive from Lanjaron. Orgiva is a thriving market town well documented in Chris Stewart's book 'Driving Over Lemons'. Lanjaron famous for its healing spa waters acts as a gateway to the Alpujarra Mountains. Cortijo Derry is within easy reach of the Costa Tropical with many lovely seaside towns and the magical city of Granada, both about 40 min, drive, or the charming white mountain villages. Private artwork and cosy furnishings make this Cortijo feel like home. The pretty front terrace is shaded by the spreading branches of an ancient olive tree, and affords beautiful views of the mountains and church spires of Orgiva. The pool terrace, is accessed through a cool covered courtyard with gates and very safe for children; it has views of the mountains and extensive olive grove on which the Cortijo lies. Also growing on the land are orange, lemon, almond and a variety of other fruit trees.

Notes on accommodation
Cortijo Derry is particularly suitable for a large family or families sharing or larger groups of friends and family. Safe for children.

Outside
There is a good sized private pool with sitting patio area around, it is surrounded by fence, rimmed with bamboo and planted with jasmine and passion fruit. There is access from the front of the house through a shaded courtyard with built in seating and ornate metal gates. It is very safe for children and here are lovely views of the old olive grove, the spectacular mountains and the land extends further with many olive, nut and fruit trees which can be enjoyed during the seasonal period. To the front of the Cortijo is a large terrace shaded by a beautiful old olive tree with a charming well equipped barbeque area with a large wooden table and chairs for eating out and a swing in the tree for the children. The terrace offers idyllic views in all directions of the Sierra Nevada mountains, snow-capped in winter and at night under the stars you can see the twinkling lights of the hillside white villages and the church spires of Orgiva in the quiet distance.

Coast/Beach
The nearest beach is Salobrena, on the unspoilt Costa Tropical about 40 – 45 mins drive away, which has a long wide beach, sunbeds, and lots of lovely beach bars (popular for sardines). The coast in both directions east or west is dotted with little coves, fishing villages or larger resorts with water parks, lively bars and entertainment if needed.

Golf
Golfing is just beginning to get closer to us. A new and very popular course at the coast of Motril about 40 - 45 mins drive away. Another about the same distance is in Granada.

Skiing
The Sierra Nevada facilities are excellent for skiing just over an hours drive away, via Granada.

Travel
The nearest airport is Granada about 45/50 min drive. Monarch from Gatwick or Ryanair from Stansted or Liverpool. Malaga is about 2 hours drive and most other airports and airlines arrive here including Aerlingus from Cork and Dublin and Ryanair from Dublin. Ryanair also fly from Dublin to Almeria about 2 hours drive. Car hire is advisable but taxi/private hire can be arranged if required.

Distances
Orgiva about 5 min drive way, with its white washed streets and ethnic market on a Thursday is always popular. The unusual church spires can be seen from the Cortijo and walkers will have no trouble in enjoying a stroll taking about 30 mins there. Lanjaron is about a 10-15 mins. drive. A busy, typical Spanish working town. Plenty of local shops, bars, restaurants and the Banario for its famous water and treatments. There are lots of beautiful walks in and around Orgiva and Lanjaron.

Further details
In both Orgiva and Lanjaron there is a good range of shops, open from 9-2 and 5-8 approx for all your food requirements, tourist shops, ie postcards plus more. Orgiva can provide more home from home provisions if required - ie teabags! In both villages you will find a post office and plenty of banks. Numerous bars, most serve food too - free tapas with every beer or wine, and plenty of restaurants as well. This charming interesting area has a very low cost of living and you can enjoy excellent wines and locally produced and organic produce at very affordable prices. The province makes the boast that you can ski in the Sierra Nevada snow capped peaks in the morning and on the coast in the afternoon. The Cortijo is perfectly situated to also visit the white villages of the Alpujarra including Bubion and Capiliera. The wild flowers of May and early June are a joy to see and the region has the largest number of unique botanical species in Europe. The Sierra is inhabited by herds of mountain goats, wild boar, eagles and partridge. Olives are harvested in December and January and the Almond blossom in February is a beautiful sight. La Alpujarra is a unique part of Andalucia and has something to offer the visitor throughout the year. The fiestas are also a great experience. There is a vibrant water fiesta in Lanjaron in June and the town puts on a stirring Semana Santa also during Easter Week. Orgiva has some great fiestas too, inc the annual one on September 24 and 25th and Dia del Senor an eccentric fiesta the second Thursday before Easter. Of course a must for this holiday is a visit to the famous Alhambra Palace. It is recommended that you book in advance any time of the year and this can easily be done on line. The old Moorish capital of Granada has a story of passionate flamenco and classical guitar culture.
