Named after an ancient Arabic water course and aquaduct that still exists today, La Alcantarilla has served the rolling smallholding for centuries. But while preserving all of its original features - from the pantile roofs to sturdy oak doors and balconies it now combines the highest level of comfort. Using local building methods, the house has been decorated in sensitive neutral shades. With its metre-thick walls it stays cool in summer and warmer in winter, particularly with log-burning stove and central heating, if needed. As well as a designer kitchen and separate sitting and dining area, guests have 2 private patios -one a classic patio Andaluz filled with fountains, centenario olive trees and shady corners. Encircled by streams, the sound of water is ever present and the farm stays verdant all year round with an abundance of fruit, including cherries, plums and peaches.

Outside
Outside, some 100 m from the house across an old stone bridge - and in a private meadow - is the stunning 13m spring-fed 'alberca-style' saline pool to unwind and cool down after a day's sightseeing in nearby Ronda. The pool is occasionally used, in the evenings or early mornings on agreement, by the owners - a writer and artist - who live next door. Guests also have the use of two private terraces, one a classic patio andaluz with a 100-year-old palm tree and a pergola, bedecked in jasmine, honeysuckle and roses. A complete escape, in one corner is a private dining and BBQ area, under the shade of vines and with spectacular views across to the mountains of Grazalema national park and the dramatic backdrop of Ronda. On top of this, for variety, right by the house - in total shade during the heat of the summer - there is another smaller patio full of roses and a collection of ancient Moroccan pots.
Coast/Beach
Ronda is located 50km/45 minute drive - from San Pedro de Alcantara on the Coast. The road winds up through the mountains of the Sierra Bermeja, and then descends into the Serrania de Ronda and the town itself. Costa de Luz is approx 2 hours away. The lake at Zahara which has a man made beach on part of it can also be used for swimming.
Golf
There is a good golf course on the Ronda - Marbella road, about a 45 mins drive away. Other golf courses in Antequera and Arcos de la Frontera are about an hour away.
Skiing
Skiing. 160km from Granada. About 3 hours drive.
Special interest holidays
Painting, drawing and writing classes can be arranged. Being a travel writer the owner has written much about the area of Andalucia and is available to help plan itineraries to the major cities of the area. The majestic Imperial cities of Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Jerez and Malaga are around an hour and a half by car or train. Also nearby are the fascinating white-walled mountain towns of Setenil de las Bodegas and Grazalema, which was once the centre of Spain's wool trade.
Travel
The nearest airports are Malaga, Jerez or Seville where car hire is readily available by all the major operators. The drive here to Alcantarilla takes an hour and a quarter from Malaga and an hour and a half from Jerez and Seville. Car hire is recommended.
Distances
While you are just 10 mins to Ronda by car, you are only 15 mins walk to Arriate, one of the friendliest white-villages of the Serrania de Ronda. Well provided with a good butcher, greengrocers and supermarkets, it also counts 3 or 4 excellent tapas bars, including the atmospheric Almacen, whose owners like to experiment with what is known in Spain as 'cocina creativa' or creative cooking. Ronda is a totally different prospect.
Further details
Walks go straight from the door, with half a dozen itineraries already mapped out for guests, while some of Spain's best hikes through the Sierra de las Nieves and Grazalema national parks begin less than half an hour away by car. Mountain bikes can be hired and other local entertainment includes ballooning, quad-biking and riding.
