Casa de Josefa is a traditional but spacious Berber style house just below the picturesque church in Capileira, nestling in the heart of the friendly local community. Its large lounge and open fire make a comfortable place to relax in the evenings. From its roof terrace and lounge there are stunning views across the Poqueira valley, up to the high Sierra mountains, snow-covered for much of the year, down to the Mediterranean coast. The many walkers, who use Capileira as their base, contribute to the lively atmosphere of the town. From the front door you can walk down to the next village (Bubion) for coffee; or down to the Poqueira river (1 hour) or across the valley and up into the mountains. A walker's paradise. For those on wheels a short drive up to the entrance to the National Park will reward you with views of the Mediterranean and even the African coastline and mountains on a clear day. There are plenty of activities, including mountain biking, horse riding and art classes.

Notes on accommodation
Well behaved animals are very welcome at Casa de Josefa.
Accessibility
The house is approached down a lane from the car park at the entrance of the village. Although short, the lane is quite steep, so not suitable for people with mobility problems.
Outside
From the lounge, stairs ascend to a spacious roof terrace overlooking the spectacular valley scenery and with views up to the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains. Many of our visitors find this a magical place to rest early in the morning and in the evenings. Although the terrace is not suitable for unaccompanied young children, access to it can be securely locked. Furniture, including table, chairs and a parasol, is provided for the terrace.
Coast/Beach
The nearest beach we like can be reached within an hour from the house - a distance of 50km. Once at the coast there are many beaches to explore, some relatively secluded mid-week or outside the peak months. We can supply more information at your request.
Special interest holidays
Painting courses are offered by Maggy, an English art teacher now living in Capileira. The local scenery and the white houses provide an abundance of subjects to inspire you. There may be opportunities to join in with the local painting group in their excursions into the mountains.
There is also the opportunity to go horse riding or mountain biking locally.
Travel
Malaga airport is 230km (2.5 hours), Almeria airport is 200km (2 hours) and Granada airport is 45km (1 hour). Car hire is available at the airports. Although public transport is available in the Alpujarras, a car is essential if you would like to explore more of the region during your stay.
Distances
With a car you can explore Las Alpujarras on a circular drive (takes 3-4 hours). From Capileira you can reach Granada in an hour; Cordoba (2 hours) and Ronda (needs an overnight stop). The countryside on these trips is magical. Granada, in particular, rewards a day-trip to see the beautiful Alhambra palace and to enjoy the Moorish culinary delights in the old part of the city.
Further details
Capileira is the highest of the 3 beautiful white-housed towns of the Poqueira valley, dominated by the peak of Mulhacen in the high Sierra. It is a focal point for walking of all grades and, if preferred, a regular bus service takes visitors high up into the Sierra Nevada National Park from which they can reach the summit more easily.
Capileira and Bubion are unusual in the region in having a number of cafes and restaurants offering some exciting and exotic tastes, as well as more traditional fare of good quality, in a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.
There is plenty of scope for activities in Las Alpujarras, from horse-riding to paragliding, hiking to skiing, while those who like to rest can easily spend a day relaxing in the mountain air at the lovely swimming pool and restaurant at Pitres, about 15 minutes drive from Capileira. We can recommend several interesting venues for your stay on request.
Booking notes
A deposit of £50 is required when booking. The balance is due 4 weeks before arrival.
Guest comments
We've just got back home after a wonderful 6 days in your place in Capiliera. We loved the house and managed to make use of the roof terrace in the early evenings and the open fire after dark. We loved the village and its stunning location and managed to do lots of walking in the area. Thanks for making Casa de Josefa such a wonderful place to stay: Rachel April 2008
We had a lovely stay at your place. We thought the information you gave about the area was excellent and had read the books you recommended, which gave really good background for the area. I had picked your place because it was different and had deliberately not gone to the larger towns lower down the valley which seemed to be more touristy. It really gave us a taste of being in a different culture and we really enjoyed the character of your house. We loved the rooftop balcony and spent lots of time up there. We would have no hesitation in recommending your place to other New Zealanders: Maureen Oct 2009
Owner profile
About the owner
We're Sue and John from London. Sue was a teacher and John worked in the Civil Service until 2006/7 when we both took early retirement. We love the mountains and the sea, and have always taken our holidays abroad, in Switzerland, the Pyrenees and Spain. Sue's passion is art, literature and cooking; John's paragliding, motorcycling and house renovation.
Year purchased: 2002
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We first ventured to Andalucia in 2000 when the foot and mouth epidemic in 2000 closed down all the paragliding sites in the UK. John suggested we should try the south of Spain and it proved to be a most exciting holiday. Sue and our daughter went horse riding and John went flying from the local mountains. We returned several times over the next couple of years and inevitably fell in love with the area and decided to buy a house. Casa de Josefa had all the qualities we were looking for – a traditional Berber house, yet tastefully renovated to provide more comfort.
Unique benefits of the property
Casa de Josefa (which took its name from the Canadian lady who renovated it) is ideally situated in the village, with good access to the car park, the shops and main square, yet occupying a quiet area in the streets just below the church. Capileira is a wonderful base - cooler in the summer than lower down the mountains or at the coast. Yet the Mediterranean beaches or the exciting city of Granada can be easily reached in an hour by car.
