Notes on accommodation
The house is heated by gas and plug in electric radiators. There is a rustic open fire. There is a baby cot in El Castanar. The swimming pool has steps and has a depth between 1.2m and 1.4. Therefore we would suggest that children need to be under the careful supervision of an adult.
Outside
The house is surrounded by acres of cork oak woodland and pine forest where you can stroll at will. There is an abundance of natural wildlife and the setting is particularly peaceful. There are tables and chairs outside the house and around the pool together with sunbeds. Naked flames are forbidden on this green belt around Gaucin so we have provided a electric hot plate/grill. The swimming pool is not heated and is private to El Castanar.
Coast/Beach
The Mediterranean coast of the Costa del Sol is approximately 30 mins away. The long white beaches of the Atlantic coast and associated water and wind sports are 1.25 hours drive away. You can also visit quite remarkable roman ruins along this coastline.
Golf
Golf is available on the coast 30 minutes away and can be explored with the local house manager.
Special interest holidays
There are many walks in the surrounding countryside, and regular guided walks are available free from the square in Gaucin.
Travel
Malaga airport is approximately 1.5 hours drive away, Seville 2.5 hours and Gibraltar approximately 1 hour. Car hire is essential and it is highly recommended that you choose a reasonably-sized family-sized car (e.g Ford Focus) for driving on the track down to the house.
Distances
Gaucin is 1.5 Km away approximately 5 mins by car. The charming and historic city of Ronda is 35 Kms away approximately 1 hours drive along beautiful and scenic mountain roads. Seville, Granada and Cadiz are approximately 3 hours drive away. Ronda, Granada and Seville can be reached by the Andulucia railway which passes through the nearby village of Cortes. Morroco and Tangiers can be easily reached by ferry.

Owner profile
About the owner
I live in Devon with my husband who works as a busy GP. We have lived in Devon for many years and both enjoy gardening walking and tennis and bridge, and my husband enjoys singing regularly in two small local choirs. Although the Devon countryside is beautiful, the warmth and relaxation offered by our holidays in Southern Spain provides us with a regular and very necessary recharge to our batteries.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
After owning an apartment on the coast near Marbella for several years, we recently visited the annual art festival in Gaucin and fell in love with the village, the surrounding countryside and all it has to offer. We both love walking and there is an abundance of walks in the mountains around Gaucin. Our property was built 200 years ago and was tastefully extended to its current accommodation some 12 years ago. El Castanar is set amongst cork oak and pine forest at the top a South facing escarpment. The outlook from the front of the house is stunning with views across the countryside as far as the Mediterranean and Morocco on a clear day. The only sounds I could hear when we arrived there for the first time was the gentle clanging of goat bells combined with chirruping of cicadas.
Unique benefits of the property
If you are looking for a peaceful break from the hubbub of a busy life, it would be difficult to imagine a more relaxing setting. You have the choice to sit by the pool and relax whilst catching up on your reading, either basking in the sun, or more probably sitting in the shade enjoying the cool breeze; don't forget your binoculars to watch the amazing wildlife, especially bird life which includes vultures and golden eagles wheeling overhead. Or if you are feeling like some exercise, why not explore one of the many fascinating local walks in the countryside, or collect some friends for a game of tennis on the free local court. Don't forget to explore Gaucin itself with its ancient castle and, most importantly, its many tapas bars and restaurants which offer wonderful food and wine.
