Casa Aloe is a Secluded House Bordered by Almond Orchards with Spectacular Views
Sleeps 1 to 14 persons (from 1 to 6 Bedrooms)

|
Casa Aloe is located on the very edge of the stunning village of Atalbeitar, one of a collection of seven white-washed Moorish villages that make up La Taha; a south-facing valley on the slopes of Mulhacen, the highest mountain in Spain. Its ancient donkey lanes make it a car-free village, peaceful and safe for children. The house has been recently restored using traditional materials in original ways, with simplicity and comfort in mind. Chestnut beams, bedrock corners and many unique touches give it a rustic beauty and provide an enchanting base from which to explore the magical surroundings of the Sierra Nevada National Park. If you like houses with character and history, you will love Casa Aloe. The house is very versatile and you can have several let options, with a choice of between 2 and 6 bedrooms. We have given the rooms names and numbers so that you can identify which you'll have with each option. 'Notes on accommodation' further on.

If the extra wing of the house is open: You can access the house through another staircase which might be easier, though it has deep steps. Please ask for more details if in doubt.

The house has an expansive terrace with a pergola and growing vine for shade, raised over a hillside of orchards and fields, leading down to the Trevelez river valley. Extraordinary views give onto untouched mountains, valleys, and weather-permitting, the sea. This terrace connects with another larger one where there is a barbecue. There is a table with chairs under the pergola shade. The entrance is off a private courtyard, with both shade and sun and rich in flowers and plant life, this ample space provides a cool alternative spot in which to enjoy Andalucia's summer climate. At 15 minutes walk there is a nice Swimming Pool in the Hotel Mecina, in the neighbouring village. Non-guests are welcome to use the pool if they buy a drink.
Coast/Beach
1 hour drive to the coast and Salobrena, an old Moorish coastal town with sandy beaches, good fish restaurants and an impressive cliff-top castle. A short distance from there and you can find all manner of hidden coves, beaches and villages to explore. And Almunecar (1 1/2 hr), another wonderful Moorish town on the coast has it all, including a superb flee-market on 1st sat. of every month.

The nearest airport is Granada, at 1 1/2 hrs drive, which now receives regular flights from the UK. Malaga international airport is also nearby at 2 1/2 hrs drive. There is a public bus service serving the village of Pitres (2 km away), with 3 buses/day to Granada, but we recommend hiring a car to be able to appreciate fully what the area has to offer. So much to explore.
Distances
Pitres, 2km by rd or 1.5 km via the moorish path has all amenities:Friday market, bank, supermarket, bakery, bars and restaurants and a large open air swimming pool with grass lawns and fine views. Fondales, Busquistar and Ferreirola even nearer are gorgeous. Trevelez, 9km, the highest village in Spain is also worth a visit. Granada is 1 1/4hrs, with its fascinating historic centre, the Alhambra palace, 'hammam' Turkish baths, old moorish quarter and more. Every village offers free tapas.
Further details
Worth mentioning is the network of good walking paths criss-crossing this area of rich wildlife, these are the old moorish paths linking all the villages, the most famous of which is the 'Camino Real' or GR7, which also passes through our village Atalbeitar, en route from the coast of Almeria to the city of Granada taking in many breathtakingly beautiful villages and views, also taking you to the gorgeous Poqueira valley, 2 hrs walk from the house. There is a music school near by, 10 minutes walk down the hill via the moorish path to the village of Ferreirola. They invite fabulous musicians. Name: Anna Townsend and Eric Cardinale. From our busy London lives to the wonderful peace of car-free Atalbeitar! Our stay at your beautifully restored house was just what we were looking for to unwind and relax. Fresh air and views from the terrace, long walks through wildflowers and riverbanks on ancient paths, good food in the villages, reading in the evening in front of the log fire, and waking up to the sound of birdsong and goat bells tinkling in the hills. We had an absolutely perfect holiday and will look to return. Thank you so much! Anna and Eric. May 2008.
From: Emily Kessler Tuesday, 15 July, 2008, 10:28 pm. Hi, just a quick note to say thanks for the rental of the house last week, it was blooming marvelous. So marvelous in fact that we've not even minding the horrible weather on our return because we know we had such a good week. Just far far far more wonderful that we could ever have hoped for. Thanks again Emily
Owner profile
About the owner
We are both artists, and have delighted in creating a space that is simple but harmonious. We got married 8 years ago and bought the house then as a ruin, and since we have spent the last 8 winters restoring it with all our love and care, and so we are very happy when people come and enjoy our work.
This winter we are building the swimming pool at last!
It is heated and we cannot wait, it will be finished by the end of March, and as soon as we have the photographs we'll post them here, its sooo exciting!
Year purchased: 2003
Why the owner chose a home in this location
It is the most enchanting area with ancient history and very well preserved.
There are countless of streams that make charming pools where to bathe in the summer.
It has attracted interesting people, friendly and fun to be with and there are plenty of Fiestas!
We love our wee hamlet and the house though it was a challenge to restore is now a total joy to be in.
Also the locals are now our friends and it is lovely to invite them over or be invited to their house for meals and events.
The highest mountains of Spain are behind us and this offers great variety of walks and scenery. It is also a National Park and so wild flora and fauna are abundant.
The crowds of turists do not get here because from the motorway there are 35 minutes by car of climbing up, its a spectacular road though!
Unique benefits of the property
The house is between 600/900 years old. We'd love to find out exactly but not easy without bringing an expert in Moorish architecture, but we feel its history. It is full of quirky eccentricities and charming details that we have respected.
Also it has hugely thick walls that keep the temperature well, fresher in the summer and warmer in the winter.
The house faces South and so it is filled with light. The views are stunning, uninterrupted, of the valley and the Natural Park, with a beautiful mountain range that constantly changes in colour. For painters it is heavenly because you do not need to leave the terrace to find countless of subjects to paint.
It has the hamlet behind and its little square with its fountain and wee bar for being social if one wishes to.
