Notes on accommodation
This property has been recently-refurbished and offers spacious accommodation in a truly magical setting.
Accessibility
You can drive right up to the property and park just outside the accommodation. The land is terraced, so care must be taken with small children. This property is NOT really suitable for families with babies and /or toddlers.
Outside
There are ample garden chairs and tables, loungers and parasols for relaxation. The swimming pool is private and has filtered, re-circulated freshwater - there is no chlorine used at all. The pool is very large, 15m x 8m: you can swim proper lengths and you can dive safely at the deep-end. The house has a patio surrounding it on all sides, so there is always somewhere offering shade if needed.
The extensive 100m² roof terrace is tiled and makes an ideal area for eating, sitting or sunbathing, and admiring the far-reaching views.
You are welcome to stroll around the estate and pick any of the fruits of the season from the many fruit trees on the land - these include peaches, grapefruit, oranges, kiwi and persimmon fruit.
Coast/Beach
The coast is a 30-minute drive away. The pretty beach at Salobreña offers easy access and parking, even at the height of summer, and the town offers good shopping and eating facilities. Alternatively, go a further 15 minutes along the coast to Almuñecar for a larger selection of facilities and excellent beaches.
Travel
Málaga airport offers frequent flights, and it is then a 90-minute drive to Lanjarón. Almería offers a smaller selection of flights, and Granada offers options that do not currently include UK. Car hire is available at Málaga Airport, and is essential in order to enjoy your stay to the full.
Distances
Lanjarón town centre is a 5-minute drive away, with banks, small supermarkets, general grocery shops and gift shops. There are the remains of a Moorish Castle and a large park which hosts a summer season of music and films.
The white village of Pampaneira is a 30-minute drive away, and is a centre for traditional arts. Artesan chocolate and Alpujarran rugs make excellent gifts.
Granada is a 30-minute drive away, well-worth the visit to its city centre and magnificent Alhambra Palace.
Further details
Lanjarón is a very compact, traditional Alpujarran town. It has numerous restaurants that offer economic menus of traditional and international cuisine. The many bars cheerfully provide complimentary tapas' with the wine or beer you order; alternatively make your selection from their menu.
Opposite the tourist information office is the Spa (the Balneario) where you can pamper yourself, by indulging in some of the many treatments on offer.
There are several gift shops selling locally-produced delicious honey, Alpujarran rugs and Trevélez ham (reputedly the best in Spain).
The municipal swimming-pool is a half Olympic size, and is open during July and August. It is inexpensive, and has its own snack bar.
There are two banks, three mini-supermarkets where you can buy your provisions, bakers and butchers.
It offers excellent access to walking or biking routes, and indeed the GR7 route runs close to the property and on up into the hills. Make sure you take plenty to drink, filling your bottles up at the drinking fountains in town.
Horse riding is available on the outskirts of Lanjarón at Caballo Blanco, and Adventure Activities are available at several locations, depending on the season.
The weather is generally beautiful here, with clear blue skies and sunshine. Occasionally low cloud does descend, but this is rare, and it is normal for hot to warm temperatures by day throughout most of the year, though cool by night in December to April. Spring is the most beautiful time, when the Almond blossom and wild herbs are in abundance. The most comfortable time for hiking is outside the June to September period, although even then it is well worth a visit to the top of the Sierra Nevada ski resort where the cool temperatures make it ideal for walking.
Booking notes
We require a 25% non-refundable deposit in order to secure your booking, and the balance to be paid in full 30 days before the date of arrival.
Owner profile
About the owner
Both Jackie and Nick are teachers in an Independent school in the south of England - Jackie is involved in pastoral care, and spends lots of time helping the students with their fitness and their spiritual welfare; Nick teaches Spanish up to A level in the classroom, but loves his involvement with the students outdoors doing Duke of Edinburgh Award activities. We both are actively involved in counselling our charges and helping to enrich their lives.
Our three sons are grown-up and away working, and our daughter has just started her university course at Exeter. They all come out when possible.
Year purchased: 2008
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought this amazing property 3 years ago after a ten-year search for the right location, and have spent the time since then renovating and refurbishing so that we can enjoy it ourselves and share it with others. We love Lanjarón, and the Alpujarras in general, and spend as much time in the property as possible - it offers so much tranquility and the chance to go hiking up in the hills or down to the reservoir; or simply into town to enjoy a coffee! The local people are so friendly and welcoming that everyone feels instantly at home. There is a great buzz in town in the summer months and a more peaceful atmosphere out of season.
Unique benefits of the property
The peace and tranquility is matched only by the all-round views, to the mountains or down the valley to the coast. The skies are wide and open, usually sunny and blue, and fill you with inspiration! The property is secluded, yet only a 5-minute drive or a 15-minute walk into town or to the municipal pool. The beauty of the property is the pool, that really does allow you to swim and dive, as well as simply floating about! As regards the house, you are hard put as to whether to sit on the terrace around the property or go up on to the roof terrace. It is all to hand and offers options.
