The village has a new public swimming pool, with landscaped gardens, open during the summer months. Various local festivals, both cultural and religious, are held throughout the year, such as the Easter processions, and others honouring Istán's saint.

"Little slice of heaven"
Our fondest memories of our stay revolve around the secluded rooftop terrace with its stunning views towards the mountains. It is a great spot for cooking on a barbecue, dining under the stars, laying out in the sun or watching the sun set. Another abiding memory of the village is its abundance of water which pours out cold from mountain springs at numerous fountains, including one right outside the front door which makes a pleasant gurgling noise day and night. The village is tidy and prosperous with plenty of walking opportunities nearby. It's surrounded by smallholdings so you'll hear roosters crowing, goats bleating and dogs barking at all hours - don't forget your earplugs! Local shops are well stocked. There is a lovely bakery and the greengrocer was particularly friendly. We didn't venture into any tavernas, preferring to cook for ourselves in the simple but perfectly adequate kitchen. The house has one room on top of the other. This means lots of stair climbing, so it's not recommended for toddlers or the elderly. Cars have to be parked at the town's car park on the opposite end of the village, about a 5-minute walk. The mountain road into town is a bit tortuous (bend after bend after bend) but not treacherous. It didn't stop us from venturing out in our hire car on numerous occasions to Gibraltar, Puerto Banus, Marbella, Ronda, Antequera, the Roman ruins at Baelo Claudio and beaches like Cabo Pino.

"Istan village house"
This house in Istan offers everything you could ask of an authentic Spanish village experience, yet is only a short drive away from either millionaire?s nautical paradise or long, quiet unspoilt beaches- if you take the time to go off the beaten track and hunt them out. The house is simple and airy in design and very well equipped for a self catering holiday. The best feature has to be the roof terrace, 360 degree views of the mountains with an airborne show every evening from the local bird life whilst the sun sets ? best enjoyed with a glass of local Rioja and olives. The village has everything you need, supermarket, baker, bars and restaurants; fresh fish delivered a couple of times a week. The walks from the village into the surrounding hills are fantastic and are suitable for a slow stroll or a day?s hike. On our visits to Istan we have seen flamenco performed, marriage and celebrations in the narrow streets, locals chatting in the square ? whatever they are doing the local people offer a very warm welcome and make visitors feel part of the community. I can?t recommend this house and village highly enough.

"Perfect Escape Location"
We were lucky enough to get this property when a last minute break came up. Initially we had booked 6 days off work but had such a great time we had to contact the owners on the day before our planned departure to extend the trip. If anyone is looking for a break from the fast pace of modern living, authentic Spanish lifestyle or just peace to recharge then I cannot recommend this property highly enough. We cannot wait until we next enjoy a glass of rioja on the roof terrace as the sun sets behind the mist covered mountains.

"Spanish village life"
This property is accurately described on the website. It offers clean basic accommodation for two people and is very well situated for those who would like to get away (but not too far) from the madding crowd on the coast and sample a slice of traditional Spanish village life. It is not luxurious but the price reflects this and the house is looked after very well by a local lady. I am happy to recommend the house to anyone who doesn't mind a little bit of walking and who would enjoy wandering the tiny streets of a thriving little "pueblo" which has a surprising number of excellent amenities.

'The villagers are very friendly and we happened to be there at the time of their Saint's festival - magical!'
'Thank you for letting us stay in this wonderful, peaceful place. The air is incredible, the tapas divine - and my husband spotted a Golden Eagle!'
'We didn't move off the roof terrace all week!'
About the Owner
I've lived in the centre of Bath for over 30 years in our old stone house on the river. Graham and I converted the old kitchens about 20 years ago to make a spacious apartment to let for holidays for a variety of visitors around the world.
Our small holiday house in a 'white' mountain village in Andalucia offers a quite different experience. We love both!
Year property purchased: 1998
Why this location?
The mountains of Andalucia are stunning and the traditional 'white' villages such as Istán give you a taste of how life used to be, not really so long ago in this part of Spain.
